Combined Prenatal Pesticide Exposure and Folic Acid Intake in Relation to Autism Spectrum Disorder
Conclusions: In this study population, associations between pesticide exposures and ASD were attenuated among those with high versus low FA intake during the first month of pregnancy. Confirmatory and mechanistic studies are needed. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP604 Received: 07 June 2016 Revised: 16 March 2017 Accepted: 18 March 2017 Published: 08 September 2017 Address correspondence to R. A Typology of Secondary Stressors Among Refugees of Conflict in the Middle East: The Case of Syrian Refugees in Jordan
Conclusions As shown in the introduction, the relief literature does recognise the importance of stressors arising from exile, but it lacks an organised conceptual framework to classify these stressors or to measure them. The only effort that we are aware of is a typology of secondary stressors in disasters18, which was not designed with armed conflicts in mind. We recommend using the term secondary stressors instead of daily stressors, as it includes stressors that are not daily in nature, in addition to traumatic stressors that arise from exile. Our data showed that refugees did occasionally report primary stressors caus...

Three-Year Follow-Up Study Exploring Metacognition and Function in Individuals With First Episode Psychosis
Conclusion The present 3-year follow-up study was able to demonstrate that metacognitive ability at baseline significantly predicted improvement in functioning after 3 years, in FEP. This was independent of neurocognition, functional capacity, and negative symptoms. This study highlighted the importance of intervening early to enhance metacognitive ability over neurocognitive ability or functional capacity, in order to improve functioning later on, and to target interventions to improve functioning in those with poor metacognitive ability in the early stages of psychosis. Future studies should aim to replicate this within...

Endocrine Disruptors and Health Effects in Africa: A Call for Action
Conclusion: To address the many challenges posed by EDCs, we argue that Africans should take the lead in prioritization and evaluation of environmental hazards, including EDCs. We recommend the institution of education and training programs for chemical users, adoption of the precautionary principle, establishment of biomonitoring programs, and funding of community-based epidemiology and wildlife research programs led and funded by African institutes and private companies. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP1774 Received: 16 February 2017 Revised: 22 May 2017 Accepted: 24 May 2017 Published: 22 August 2017 Address correspond...

Trends and success stories in research on occupational and environmental health
The headline in a main Finnish newspaper on 16 November announced: “Trust and interest for published science has increased in Finland”. I would have hypothesized that evidence-based knowledge was losing the game against the rush of non-scientific and commercial information – but I was wrong. A 3-year follow-up survey among the Finland population was clear on this. Could the growth in electronic and social media information actually be causing people to search for knowledge based on scientific facts? Forty-five years have passed since the publication of the first issue of the Scandinavian Journal of Work, Environm...

Arsenic and Obesity: A Comparison of Urine Dilution Adjustment Methods
Conclusions: Our findings suggest that arsenic exposure is not associated with obesity, and that urinary creatinine and osmolality may be colliders on the causal pathway from arsenic exposure to obesity, as common descendants of hydration and body composition. In studies of urinary biomarkers and obesity or obesity-related outcomes, alternative metrics such as urinary flow rate or analytic strategies such as covariate-adjusted standardization should be considered. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP1202 Received: 07 October 2016 Revised: 21 March 2017 Accepted: 30 March 2017 Published: 28 August 2017 Address correspondence t...

Publication date: 21 February 2018 Source:The Lancet, Volume 391, Supplement 1 Author(s): Doaa Hammoudeh, Ernestina Coast, Rita Giacaman, David Lewis, Yoke Rabaia, Tiziana Leone Background Few studies exist of women's experiences and understanding of health in the transition from reproductive to post-reproductive age. Available data is from high-income settings, and most studies tend to focus on women of reproductive age. Little is known about women's perspectives in the Palestinian context. The aim of this study was to add to our understanding of Palestinian women's midlife experiences, looking beyond reproduction and ch...

Educational attainment of adolescents treated in psychiatric inpatient care: a register study over 3 decades
AbstractMental disorders may for various reasons impair educational attainment, and with far-reaching consequences given the impact of education on subsequent employment, social life, life choices and even health and mortality. This register-based study addresses trends in educational attainment among Finnish adolescents aged 13 –17 with mental disorders severe enough to necessitate inpatient treatment between 1980 and 2010. Our subjects (N = 14,435), followed up until the end of 2014, were at greater risk of discontinuing education beyond compulsory comprehensive school or of lower educational attainment than their ...

IJERPH, Vol. 18, Pages 12733: Environmental Performance in EU Countries from the Perspective of Its Relation to Human and Economic Wellbeing
ril Stefan The actual development challenges impose new criteria of national performance evaluation, the concept of wellbeing tending to be measured not just in terms of economic and social dimensions, but also vs. the environment. Accordingly, considering the national environmental performance among the EU countries in 2006–2019 period, we grouped them and concentrated on the clusters registering the highest and lowest levels, analyzing how the components of the human and economic dimensions influence it. Applying panel data models, our main results emphasized that, firstly, for the countries with a bett...

Correlations of Clinical and Audio-Vestibulometric Findings with Coexisting Anxiety and Depression in M énière’s Disease Patients
Conclusion: Vertigo appears to be more intrusive than the other MD symptoms, and a higher correlation with anxiety than depression was demonstrated in this cohort. However, depression was seen less among married and educated patients, suggesting the role of coping capability, and had more pronounced clinical/vestibulometric correlates. Overall, these results indicated that it is mainly the severity of organic/physiological pathology which determines the degree of depression and anxiety in MD rather than vice versa.Audiol Neurotol
