Graduate Medical Education Initiatives to Develop the Physician Workforce in Rural Wisconsin.
Abstract The physician shortage is an increasing concern across the nation. Wisconsin is seeing this shortage grow even more prominently in rural counties. In order to prepare a sufficient rural physician workforce, several state-funded programs are collaborating to monitor the number of rural graduate medical education (GME) opportunities available, assess the number of rural physicians needed to meaningfully reduce the shortage, and promote effective development and expansion of new and existing opportunities. From 2010 to 2017, there has been substantial growth in rural-focused undergraduate, graduate, and cont...

Roles, Responsibilities, and Value of a Vice Chair of Education in Academic Pediatric Departments
The leadership structure within many academic departments often includes faculty members in dedicated educational leadership positions who are responsible for providing oversight to a diverse population of specialty-specific learners and programs. These individuals provide leadership for medical education programs that span the continuum from undergraduate to graduate and continuing medical education. The term “Vice Chair of Education” (VCE) first appeared in the medical literature in 2010 to describe this leadership function.

Mid-Atlantic Cardiac Anesthesiology – Leveraging Virtual Technology to Advance Continuing Medical Education
The coronavirus disease pandemic has radically and permanently disrupted the landscape of graduate medical education.1 All aspects of residency and fellowship training have been affected – clinical volume, patient acuity, research, physician wellness, and medical education.2–6 Curricula have been forcibly altered, in order to adapt to the clinical surges of the disease while maintaining the integrity of trainee education. This stressful and challenging situation has forced educa tors to innovate and rethink traditional educational paradigms.

Review of online educational resources for medical physicists
Medical physicists are often involved in the didactic training of graduate students, residents (both physics and physicians), and technologists. As part of continuing medical education, we are also involved in maintenance of certification projects to assist in the education of our peers. As such, it is imperative that we remain current concerning available educational resources. Medical physics journals offer book reviews, allowing us an opportunity to learn about newly published books in the field. A similar means of communication is not currently available for online educational resources. This information is conveyed th...

Special Considerations in the Care of the Physician-Patient: a Lesson for Medical Education.
Authors: Lam ST Abstract In the field of medicine, there is strong emphasis on the healing of others, but not as much on the healing of self. It is therefore not surprising that physicians may be ill-equipped to not only care for other physicians, but to be treated as patients. Multiple studies indicate that relatively few physicians have their own primary physicians and often rely on self-treatment, rather than obtaining comprehensive care from other physicians. Through the lens of a personal struggle with serious illness, the author develops a discussion about potential barriers physicians face in seeking care, t...

The scholar role in the National Competence Based Catalogues of Learning Objectives for Undergraduate Medical Education (NKLM) compared to other international frameworks.
Conclusion: The scholar role of the NKLM differs from other international outcome frameworks. Discussing these results shall increase propagation and understanding of the NKLM and thus contribute to the qualification of future medical graduates in Germany. Assessment and Feedback Methods in Competency-Based Medical Education
Graduate and continuing medical education programs have transitioned to a competency-based medical education (CBME) model, where abilities necessary for the practice of medicine, called competencies, are defined as learning outcomes. Each competency contains milestones that describe stages of development from novice to master and provide criteria for assessing learners along this continuum. Assessments in CBME are formative and are intended to assist learners in achieving the next stage in mastery rather than render a final evaluation.

A randomised controlled trial of extended immersion in multi-method continuing simulation to prepare senior medical students for practice as junior doctors
Background: Many commencing junior doctors worldwide feel ill-prepared to deal with their new responsibilities, particularly prescribing. Simulation has been widely utilised in medical education, but the use of extended multi-method simulation to emulate the junior doctor experience has rarely been reported. Methods: A randomised controlled trial compared students who underwent two, week-long, extended simulations, several months apart (Intervention), with students who attended related workshops and seminars alone (Control), for a range of outcome measures. Results: Eighty-four third year students in a graduate-entry medic...

Factors affecting perceived credibility of assessment in medical education: A scoping review
AbstractAssessment is more educationally effective when learners engage with assessment processes and perceive the feedback received as credible. With the goal of optimizing the educational value of assessment in medical education, we mapped the  primary literature to identify factors that may affect a learner’s perceptions of the credibility of assessment and assessment-generated feedback (i.e., scores or narrative comments). For this scoping review, search strategies were developed and executed in five databases. Eligible articles were primary research studies with medical learners (i.e., medical students to post-grad...

Accreditation systems for Postgraduate Medical Education: a comparison of five countries
AbstractThere is a widespread consensus about the need for accreditation systems for evaluating post-graduate medical education programs, but accreditation systems differ substantially across countries. A cross-country comparison of accreditation systems could provide valuable input into policy development processes. We reviewed the accreditation systems of five countries: The United States, Canada, The United Kingdom, Germany and Israel. We used three information sources: a literature review, an online search for published information and applications to some accreditation authorities. We used template analysis for coding...
