Rejection of insulin therapy among patients with type 2 diabetes in China: reasons and recommendations.
CONCLUSIONS: Patients with T2DM in China are often resistant to insulin therapy if they have been diagnosed with the disease for a relatively short time or if the disease has been relatively mild. Educating patients on the benefits of insulin therapy, not only at the initial diagnosis with T2DM but also when insulin therapy becomes necessary, will likely increase their willingness to undertake it. The effect of patient education on glycemic status and self-monitoring activity in type 2 diabetic patients recently switched to basal insulin analogue treatment.
CONCLUSIONS: The possible reason for baseline differences between the two groups was that younger and more motivated patients with better glycemic control tended to join the education program. Education was associated with beneficial body mass changes but not with improvement in glycemic status. Improved self-monitoring and physical activity can be documented in the group of educated patients. Orv. Hetil., 2014, 155(43), 1713-1721. PMID: 25327461 [PubMed - in process]

Insulin-like growth factor pathway aberrations and gastric cancer; evaluation of prognostic significance and assessment of therapeutic potentials
Abstract Gastric cancer is a major cause of treatment-related mortality and morbidity worldwide, it ranks as the fourth most common cause of cancer-related death in males and fifth most common cause of cancer-related death in women. The prognosis of advanced cases with gastric cancer looks poor with the majority dying within 1 year of diagnosis of metastatic disease. Thus, intensive search for new innovative treatments has been a major focus of current oncology research. Insulin-like growth factor (IGF) pathway has been evaluated extensively in preclinical settings of gastric cancer. Initially, a number of studi...

Use of sodium-glucose cotransporter type 2 inhibitors in older adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
Authors: Mikhail N Abstract Sodium-glucose cotransporter type 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors such as canagliflozin and dapagliflozin have been approved for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus. A PubMed search was conducted of the literature from April 1996 to August 2014 to identify all human studies related to SGLT2 inhibitors. Pertinent guidelines of experts and the prescribing information for canagliflozin and dapagliflozin are reviewed. SGLT2 inhibitors may be used as an add-on therapy in select and relatively healthy older patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus who are overweight and have uncontrolled hypertension...

Electromagnetic Interference From Electronic Devices Used in the Management of Type 1 Diabetes Can Impair the Performance of an Avalanche Transceiver in Search Mode
Conclusions Electromagnetic interference produced by some diabetes devices when held within 30 cm of a searching avalanche transceiver can impair the ability to locate a signal. Such interference could significantly compromise the outcome of a companion rescue scenario. Further investigation using other pumps and rtCGMS devices is required to evaluate all available diabetes electronics. Meantime, all electronic diabetes devices including rtCGMS and insulin pumps should not be used within 30 cm of an avalanche transceiver.

Chemokine ligand 2 and paraoxonase-1 in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease: The search for alternative causative factors.
Abstract The incidence and prevalence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is constantly increasing. Despite this is apparently associated with the growing increase in obesity, insulin resistance and obesity-related metabolic disturbances their presence is not a necessary or sufficient condition to explain the accumulation of fat in the liver. Conversely, NAFLD is a predictor of other metabolic risks. NAFLD is currently the most frequent chronic liver disease but should not be considered benign or anecdotic because a considerable proportion of patients with NAFLD progress to cirrhosis and end-stage liver d...

Impact of the Diabetes Inpatient Care and Education (DICE) project and the DICE Care Pathway on patient outcomes and trainee doctor's knowledge and confidence
ConclusionThe Diabetes Inpatient Care and Education project and the Diabetes Inpatient Care and Education Care Pathway improved patient outcomes and the knowledge and confidence of trainee doctors in this hospital. The impact of a similar project in other hospitals needs to be evaluated. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

Current management of diabetes mellitus and future directions in care
The last 90 years have seen considerable advances in the management of type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Prof MacLean of Guy's Hospital wrote in the Postgraduate Medical Journal in 1926 about the numerous challenges that faced patients and their healthcare professionals in delivering safe and effective diabetes care at that time. The discovery of insulin in 1922 heralded a new age in enabling long-term glycaemic control, which reduced morbidity and mortality. Thirty years later, the first oral agents for diabetes, the biguanides and sulfonylureas, appeared and freed type 2 patients from having to inject insulin following di...

Systematic Review of Metabolic Syndrome Biomarkers: A Panel for Early Detection, Management, and Risk Stratification in the West Virginian Population.
Conclusion: Based on the evidence presented within the literature, the aforementioned biomarkers correlate significantly with metabolic syndrome and could provide a minimally-invasive means for early detection and specific treatment of these disorders. Further research is encouraged to determine the efficacy of applying these biomarkers to diagnosis and treatment in a clinical setting. PMID: 26816492 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Peer-to-Peer, Interactive GP Education can Reduce Barriers to Best Practice in Diabetes Management
Conclusion A peer-to-peer, interactive GP education program reduced GPs’ perceptions of the difficulties of starting insulin in T2D and achieved changes in attendees’ clinical practice. This education program offers an effective approach to overcome the therapeutic inertia that is too common in diabetes management.
