Contact Dermatitis to Cosmetics
AbstractAllergic contact dermatitis (ACD) to cosmetics is extremely common —probably the most common reason patients present for patch testing. The diagnosis should initially be suspected based on the patient history and the distribution of the dermatitis. Once the diagnosis is suspected, empiric recommendations for low allergenicity products should be implemented until patch testing is performed. The face is exposed to greatest number of cosmetics, and as a result, facial dermatitis is the prototypical presentation of cosmetic contact dermatitis. In particular, the eyelids are frequently involved, with common sources in...

The nationwide program of allergic disease prevention as an implementation of GARD guidelines in Poland.
Conclusions: The use of e-health tools in mass screening and new media to conduct information and education campaigns allows for the reduction of costs and for efficient implementation of activities. It is important to popularize the use of this type of solutions both at national and local level. PMID: 30416810 [PubMed]

Community-based survey as a basis for evidence-based public health: children living in Upper Silesian Industrial Zone.
CONCLUSION: Our study revealed significant increase in the prevalence of respiratory diseases and disorders after 8 years in adolescents living in the Upper Silesian Industrial Zone. This is a relevant finding which provides the evidence for decision makers in the scope of local public health policies. PMID: 30419617 [PubMed - in process]

Bioaerosol of salt chambers in the ‘Wieliczka’ Salt Mine, Poland
AbstractThe ‘Wieliczka’ Salt Mine with specific stable, microclimatic conditions is a unique place, where pulmonary and allergy-related diseases are treated. The aim of this study was to determine the occurrence of biological particles in the air of the ‘Wieliczka’ Salt Mine in relation to the location and time. Twenty measurements were taken quarterly in 2012–2016, in four salt chambers. The volumetric and impact methods were used to measure microbiological contamination, while the mite and cat allergens were measured using FEIA assay. The statistically significant differences among the study s ites and time of ...

Dissociating polysensitization and multimorbidity in children and adults from a Polish general population cohort
ConclusionsMultimorbidity is associated with polysensitization especially in children compared with adults in Polish population cohort. New insights into single disease patterns were found: bronchial asthma is the strongest risk factor for the development of multimorbidity in comparison with allergic rhinitis and atopic dermatitis.

Scurfy Mice Develop Features of Connective Tissue Disease Overlap Syndrome and Mixed Connective Tissue Disease in the Absence of Regulatory T Cells
Discussion Treg represent a lineage of T cells which play a fundamental role in maintaining humoral tolerance in the periphery. This subset of “suppressor T cells” is identified as FoxP3-expressing CD4+ T cells (16, 17). The unrestrained expression of FoxP3 is essential for the development and function of Treg (4). Accordingly, a disruption of the Foxp3 gene in scurfy mice results in an autoimmune lymphoproliferative disorder with fatal multi-organ inflammation (18). Since the causative mutation occurs in orthologous genes, the scurfy phenotype is indicated as the murine equivalent of the human IPEX sy...

Organizational model for the management of patients with chronic allergic conditions.
Conclusions: The authors propose an organizational model incorporating the position of a healthcare educator (HE) as a coordinator in the process of managing chronic allergic conditions in adult patients within the Polish healthcare system. Adult patient education by the HE would include introducing the principles of secondary and tertiary prevention in order to improve the quality of life in patients with chronic allergic conditions. BCG Moreau Vaccine Safety Profile and NK Cells —Double Protection Against Disseminated BCG Infection in Retrospective Study of BCG Vaccination in 52 Polish Children with Severe Combined Immunodeficiency
ConclusionThe BCG Moreau vaccine produced in Poland, with well-documented genetic characteristics, seems to be safer than other BCG substrains used in other regions of the world. Importantly, NK cells seem to play a role in protecting SCID patients against disseminated BCG complications, which NK- SCID patients are more prone to. HSCT and TB therapy could be relevant due to the patients ’ survival and the fact that they protect against BCG infection.

Characteristics and treatment regimens across ERS SHARP severe asthma registries
Little is known about the characteristics and treatments of patients with severe asthma across Europe, but both are likely to vary. This is the first study in the European Respiratory Society Severe Heterogeneous Asthma Research collaboration, Patient-centred (SHARP) Clinical Research Collaboration and it is designed to explore these variations. Therefore, we aimed to compare characteristics of patients in European severe asthma registries and treatments before starting biologicals. This was a cross-sectional retrospective analysis of aggregated data from 11 national severe asthma registries that joined SHARP with establis...

Associations between nailfold capillaroscopy findings and interstitial lung disease in patients with mixed connective tissue disease.
Conclusions: The NFC examination should be considered in all patients with a diagnosis of MCTD. The presence of giant capillaries may be a promising marker for interstitial lung disease in these patients, especially among those with a short duration of disease (i.e. < 1 year). Influence of Cosmetic Type and Distribution Channel on the Presence of Regulated Fragrance Allergens: Study of 2044 Commercial Products
AbstractContact dermatitis linked to cosmetic products is a very common reason for visits to the dermatologist, and in more than half the cases, it is due to an allergic reaction. Fragrances are most often the culprit. The aim of the study was to describe the common fragrance allergens in different categories of cosmetic products available on the European market. We wanted to assess the influence of cosmetic type and distribution channel on the presence of fragrance allergens. There are the allergens whose concentration exceeds 0.001% in leave-on products and 0.01% in rinse-off products. A total of 2044 commercial hygiene,...

Is diet partly responsible for differences in COVID-19 death rates between and within countries?
AbstractReported COVID-19 deaths in Germany are relatively low as compared to many European countries. Among the several explanations proposed, an early and large testing of the population was put forward. Most current debates on COVID-19 focus on the differences among countries, but little attention has been given to regional differences and diet. The low-death rate European countries (e.g. Austria, Baltic States, Czech Republic, Finland, Norway, Poland, Slovakia) have used different quarantine and/or confinement times and methods and none have performed as many early tests as Germany. Among other factors that may be sign...
