Clinical Correlates and Prognostic Value of Elevated Right Atrial Pressure in Patients With Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy.
CONCLUSIONS: Elevated RAP in patients with HCM is associated with left-sided heart failure and is an independent predictor of all-cause mortality and new-onset AF. PMID: 29526913 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Association of ventricular arrhythmia and in-hospital mortality in stroke patients in Florida: A nonconcurrent prospective study
Abstract: Stroke remains one of the leading causes of death in the United States. Current evidence identified electrocardiographic abnormalities and cardiac arrhythmias in 50% of patients with an acute stroke. The purpose of this study was to assess whether the presence of ventricular arrhythmia (VA) in adult patients hospitalized in Florida with acute stroke increased the risk of in-hospital mortality. Secondary data analysis of 215,150 patients with ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke hospitalized in the state of Florida collected by the Florida Agency for Healthcare Administration from 2008 to 2012. The main outcome for th...

Carotid Dissection Complicated by Polymorphic Ventricular Tachycardia
In this case report, we describe a patient with fibromuscular dysplasia who suffered spontaneous bilateral carotid artery dissections. This was followed by significant variations in blood pressure and heart rates during her admission. Unfortunately, during an episode of bradycardia, a premature ventricular contraction occurred during the T wave which resulted in polymorphic ventricular tachycardia. As described in the case and in graphic depiction, this hemodynamic instability resolved after stenting of the carotid artery.

Pharmacologic cardioversion with intravenous amiodarone is likely safe in neurocritically Ill patients
Publication date: Available online 13 February 2017 Source:Journal of Clinical Neuroscience Author(s): Michael Su, David Seki, Asma M. Moheet Neurological injury is often associated with cardiac abnormalities, including electrophysiological issues. Cardioversion of acute atrial fibrillation (<48h’ duration) without anticoagulation carries about a 0.7% risk of thromboembolism. There is limited data on managing acute atrial fibrillation specifically in the neuroscience intensive care unit (NSICU) setting. We sought to determine the safety of using intravenous (IV) amiodarone for restoring sinus rhythm in patients w...

Transcatheter device closure of postmyocardial infarction ventricular septal defect
Conclusion Our findings indicate that transcatheter device closure of PMIVSD is technically feasible, safe, and effective to reduce the shunt. The crucial prognostic factors were ascertained to be age ≥ 80 years, systolic blood pressure ≤ 90 mmHg, and procedure time ≥180 minutes.

Clinical significance of platelet reactivity during prasugrel therapy in patients with acute myocardial infarction.
CONCLUSIONS: It is feasible to treat AMI patients with prasugrel. HTPR is a significant independent risk factor for adverse events in AMI patients receiving prasugrel after primary PCI. PMID: 27836373 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Gender Discrepancy in Diabetic Patients Hospitalized With Heart Failure: Does Age Matter?
Conclusions: In DHF, female gender is characterized by having a high prevalence of metabolic syndrome components. Also, females are more likely to have better Left ventricular ejection fraction but less likely to receive cardiovascular evidence based medications. There is no significant difference in the overall hospital mortality between both genders, however, in the younger age; males have a significantly higher mortality.

A novel cross-sector telemedical approach to detect arrhythmia in primary care patients with palpitations using a patient-activated event recorder.
CONCLUSIONS: The investigated cross-sector telemetric network is a feasible approach to detect arrhythmia in patients with palpitations and may have high impact on further treatment, notably in those at risk for stroke due to AF. PMID: 27320955 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Risk factors for cardiovascular events of antidementia drugs in Alzheimer's disease patients
Conclusion The results of this study can help clinicians identify AD patients with a higher risk of cardiovascular events who therefore should be prescribed antidementia drugs cautiously.

Clinical Profile and Prognosis of Left Ventricular Apical Aneurysm in Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy.
CONCLUSIONS: Apical aneurysm is not rare in patients with HCM and it confers an extremely poor prognosis. Early aggressive therapies should be considered for this entity and prophylactic aneurysmectomy may be an option. PMID: 26802765 [PubMed - in process]

Ventricular Tachycardia Ablation in the Presence of Left Ventricular Thrombus: Safety and Efficacy
Conclusion: Initial data suggest ablation of VT in the presence of intracavitary thrombus is feasible, is associated with a similar success rate to historical studies in patients without thrombus, and has an acceptable risk of complications given the high risk nature of patients with ES. Further data is needed; however, the presence of a laminated thrombus should not necessarily preclude ablation in patients who have failed medical therapy for VT in whom ablation is otherwise indicated. This article is protected by copyright. Ultrarapid Induction of Hypothermia Using Continuous Automated Peritoneal Lavage With Ice-Cold Fluids: Final Results of the Cooling for Cardiac Arrest or Acute ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction Trial
Conclusion: Automated peritoneal lavage system is a safe and ultrarapid method to induce and maintain hypothermia, which appears feasible in cardiac arrest patients and awake patients with acute myocardial infarction. The shivering response appeared to be delayed and much reduced with this technology, diminishing metabolic disorders associated with cooling and minimizing sedation requirement. Our data suggest that ultrarapid cooling could prevent subtle neurologic damage compared with slower cooling. This will need to be confirmed in direct comparative studies.

Clinical Characteristics and Long-Term Outcomes of Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy.
Authors: Yoshinaga M, Yoshikawa D, Ishii H, Hirashiki A, Okumura T, Kubota A, Sakai S, Harada K, Somura F, Mizuno T, Fujiwara W, Yokoi H, Hayashi M, Ishii J, Murohara T, Yoshida Y, Amano T, Izawa H Abstract Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) has various morphological and clinical features. A decade has passed since the previous survey of the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of Japanese HCM patients. The Aichi Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (AHC) Registry is based on a prospective multicenter observational study of HCM patients. The clinical characteristics of 42 ambulant HCM patients followed up for up to 5...
