Relationship between Presence of Visceral Infarction and Functional Outcome among Patients with Acute Ischemic Stroke

COVID-19-related strokes in adults below 55  years of age: a case series
ConclusionStroke may be unrelated to age and the extent of lung involvement. However, different factors may play roles in co-occurrence of stroke and COVID-19 and its outcome. Future studies with long-term follow-up and more cases are needed to assess prognostic factors.

Cerebrovascular Disease in Patients with COVID-19: A Review of the Literature and Case Series
COVID-19 has been associated with a hypercoagulable state causing cardiovascular and neurovascular complications. To further characterize cerebrovascular disease (CVD) in COVID-19, we review the current literature of published cases and additionally report the clinical presentation, laboratory and diagnostic testing results of 12 cases with COVID-19 infection and concurrent CVD from two academic medical centers in Houston, TX, USA, between March 1 and May 10, 2020. Comparison of risk factors, treatment, and outcome in patients with symptomatic intracranial atherosclerotic disease in India and the United States
Conclusion: Compared to patients in US with symptomatic ICAD, Indian patients were younger and had more severe strokes. However, Indian patients had lower rates of recurrent stroke, perhaps due to greater use of dual antiplatelet therapy.

Teleneurology during the COVID-19 pandemic: A step forward in modernizing medical care

While teleneurology is regularly used in acute stroke care, its application in other branches of neurology was limited. A Stroke Care Model at an Academic, Comprehensive Stroke Center During the 2020 COVID-19 Pandemic
The COVID-19 pandemic has required the adaptation of hyperacute stroke care (including stroke code pathways) and hospital stroke management. There remains a need to provide rapid and comprehensive assessment to acute stroke patients while reducing the risk of COVID-19 exposure, protecting healthcare providers, and preserving personal protective equipment (PPE) supplies. While the COVID infection is typically not a primary cerebrovascular condition, the downstream effects of this pandemic force adjustments to stroke care pathways to maintain optimal stroke patient outcomes.

Investigation of S-Nitrosoglutathione in stroke: A systematic review and meta-analysis of literature in pre-clinical and clinical research.
CONCLUSIONS: Pre-clinical studies showed positive benefit of GSNO in animal stroke models. The meta-analysis of clinical studies demonstrated that GSNO is effective in reducing embolic signals in patients with symptomatic internal carotid artery stenosis undergoing carotid endarterectomy or stenting. Introduction: Elevated serum apolipoprotein B and the apolipoprotein B/A1 ratio have been associated with ischemic stroke and intracranial atherosclerotic disease. We sought to assess the relationship between serum levels of apolipoprotein B, apolipoprotein A1, and the apolipoprotein B/A1 ratio with ischemic stroke subtypes and large artery atherosclerosis location. Materials and Methods: We evaluated serum apolipoprotein B and apolipoprotein A1 levels in consecutive, statin-na ïve, adult ischemic stroke patients admitted to an academic medical center in southern India.

Safety and tolerability of transcranial magnetic and direct current stimulation in children: Prospective single center evidence from 3.5 million stimulations
ConclusionsStandard non-invasive brain stimulation paradigms are safe and well-tolerated in children and should be considered minimal risk. Advancement of applications in the developing brain are warranted.

Epileptic activity in neurological deterioration after ischemic stroke, a continuous EEG study.
CONCLUSIONS: Non-convulsive seizures /non-convulsive status epilepticus /periodic discharges are associated to neurological deterioration after ischemic stroke. SIGNIFICANCE: Treatment of Non-convulsive seizures /non-convulsive status epilepticus and periodic discharges, if such patterns are detected, could help prevent adverse metabolic consequences of epileptic activities on ischemic brain tissue. Comparison of Outcomes After Treatment of Large Vessel Occlusion in a Critical Care Resuscitation Unit or a Neurocritical Care Unit
ConclusionThe CCRU increased AIS-LVO patients ’ access to definitive care and reduced their transfer time from outlying medical facilities while achieving outcomes similar to those attained by patients treated in the subspecialty NCCU. We conclude that a resuscitation unit can complement the NCCU to care for patients in the hyperacute phase o f AIS-LVO.

Thrombectomy Outcomes in Acute Ischemic Stroke due to Middle Cerebral Artery M2 Occlusion with Stent Retriever versus Aspiration: A Multicenter Experience
Conclusion: Utilization of a newer-generation pump aspiration catheter compared to a stent retriever resulted in similar outcomes, but worse outcomes were seen with the manual aspiration technique.
