Gender differences in presentation of behavioral and psychological symptoms in Alzheimer's disease in Taiwan.
CONCLUSIONS: The presentation of delusion and disinhibition in BPSD is associated with the female gender and staging of AD. Disinhibition was not necessarily associated with late stage of AD. PMID: 30912669 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Tedium vitae in stroke survivors: a comparative cross-sectional study.
CONCLUSIONS: Tedium vitae is a common suicidal experience after stroke and may be among the earliest perceptible pointer to impending poststroke suicide. It is easy to assess and may be less costly to obtain an adequate sample size in studies aiming to understand the phenomenon of suicide in the stroke population. Prevalence and Predictors of Current and Former Tobacco Use among Older Adults in Indonesia
Conclusions: A high rate of current tobacco use and low rate of former tobacco use was found, particularly among men. The identified risk factors may help to better target this vulnerable population with tobacco cessation programmes. PMID: 30803198 [PubMed - in process]

Diabetes-Multimorbidity Combinations and Disability Among Middle-aged and Older Adults
ConclusionsDepressive symptoms or stroke added onto other multimorbidity combinations may pose a substantial functional burden for middle-aged and older adults with diabetes.

Cognitive impairment in patients with end-stage renal disease: Accelerated brain aging?
ConclusionsOverall, differences in cognitive functions, cortical volumes/thickness and white matter integrity associated with dialysis are also cognitive domains and brain structure changes associated with normal aging. In other words, non-demented, independently living dialysis patients present an accelerated brain aging phenotype even after taking into account effects of age, diabetes and depression.

Structural brain network measures are superior to vascular burden scores in predicting early cognitive impairment in post stroke patients with small vessel disease
ConclusionsBrain network measures, but not the SVD score, are significantly correlated with cognition in post-stroke SVD patients. Mediation analysis showed that the cerebral vascular lesions produce cognitive dysfunction by interfering with the structural brain network in SVD patients. The brain network measures may be regarded as direct and independent surrogate markers of cognitive impairment in SVD.

Dental status is Associated with Incident Functional Disability in Community-Dwelling Older Japanese: A Prospective Cohort Study Using Propensity Score Matching.
CONCLUSIONS: In this prospective cohort study targeting community-dwelling older adults in Japan, less than 20 teeth was confirmed to be an independent risk factor for functional disability even after conducting propensity score matching. This study supports previous publications showing that oral health is associated with functional disability. PMID: 30686817 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Stress at work burden as new risk factor in patients with acute cerebro- or cardiovascular events: Preliminary findings from INEV@L, a prospective pilot study
ConclusionThese preliminary data from a prospective pilot study shows a high PSF burden in patients hospitalized for acute CVE. If confirmed at a larger scale, our data could identify new opportunities for secondary preventive strategies.

Depressive symptoms and cardiovascular diseases in Polish adult population. Results of NATPOL2011 study.
CONCLUSIONS: Depressive symptoms were more prevalent in women compared to men, and were significantly and independently associated with age and primary education level in both genders, and a history of stroke in women. PMID: 30406941 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

The kynurenine pathway and cognitive performance in community-dwelling older adults. The Hordaland Health Study
ConclusionHigher KTR and neopterin levels, biomarkers of cellular immune activation, were associated with reduced cognitive performance, implying an association between the innate immune system, memory, and language.

Incidence of cardiovascular events in patients with stabilized coronary heart disease: the EUROASPIRE IV follow-up study
AbstractThe EUROASPIRE surveys (EUROpean Action on Secondary Prevention through Intervention to Reduce Events) demonstrated that most European coronary patients fail to achieve lifestyle, risk factor and therapeutic targets. Here we report on the 2-year incidence of hard cardiovascular (CV) endpoints in the EUROASPIRE IV cohort. EUROASPIRE IV (2012 –2013) was a large cross-sectional study undertaken at 78 centres from selected geographical areas in 24 European countries. Patients were interviewed and examined at least 6 months following hospitalization for a coronary event or procedure. Fatal and non-fatal CV events occ...

Correlates of Emergency Department Service Utilization Among U.S. Chinese Older Adults
AbstractOlder adults visit emergency departments (EDs) at a disproportionally higher rate than other age groups. Prior studies examining racial disparities in ED utilization focus on African Americans and Hispanics. There is a dearth of information on ED utilization patterns among older Asian Americans despite the evidence that ED expenditures in Asian Americans are comparable to that of Caucasians. To address this knowledge gap, we examined factors associated with ED service utilization in the largest Asian subgroup, U.S. Chinese older adults. Cross-sectional data from the Population Study of Chinese Elderly in Chicago (P...

Neurobehavioral disability in stroke patients during subacute inpatient rehabilitation: prevalence and biopsychosocial associations.
CONCLUSIONS: NBD is common within a subacute stroke inpatient population, particularly interpersonal and cognitive difficulties and preliminary analyses indicate associations with reduced functional ability, cognition and mood. There is a need to provide education and support to clinicians to facilitate routine assessment and management of NBD following stroke. PMID: 30213238 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
