Long-term risk of stroke and myocardial infarction in middle-aged men with a hypertensive response to exercise: a 44-year follow-up study
Conclusion: Among middle-aged men with high resting and maximum blood pressure during maximum exercise workload, an increased risk of stroke was observed but not for MI. Further studies with larger sample sizes are needed to investigate the underlying mechanisms of the increased risk of stroke among individuals with hypertensive response to exercise.

Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol reduction and statin intensity in myocardial infarction patients and major adverse outcomes: a Swedish nationwide cohort study
Conclusions  Larger early LDL-C reduction and more intensive statin therapy after MI were associated with a reduced hazard of all CV outcomes and all-cause mortality. This supports clinical trial data suggesting that earlier lowering of LDL-C after an MI confers the greatest benefit.

Galectin-3-binding protein is a novel predictor of venous thromboembolism in systemic lupus erythematosus.
CONCLUSIONS: Our study identifies serum G3BP as a novel predictor of VTE in SLE. Further studies are needed to understand the role of G3BP in VTE and translate this into clinical practice. PMID: 33337998 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Higher long-term cardiovascular morbidity after open surgery for intermittent claudication caused by infrainguinal atherosclerotic disease in patients with diabetes - a nationwide observational cohort study.
Conclusions: DM patients showed higher rates of MACE and AMI in propensity score adjusted analysis five years after planned infrainguinal open surgery for IC. Higher HbA1c was associated with MACE, stroke, and total mortality in patients with DM, whereas longer duration of DM was associated with major amputation. High Thrombin Generation after Acute Ischemic Stroke or Transient Ischemic Attack Is Associated with a Reduced Risk of Recurrence: An Observational Cohort Study.
Abstract Thrombin is increasingly recognized to be of importance for cardiovascular disease. The aim of this study was to investigate the prognostic value of thrombin generation variables in a cohort of patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS) or transient ischemic attack (TIA). Thrombin generation potential measured by calibrated automated thrombogram (CAT) and prothrombin fragment F1 + 2 was determined in the acute and convalescent phases for a cohort of 190 patients with AIS/TIA. Microvesicle (MV)-induced thrombin generation potential was determined for a subset of patients using modified CAT. Primary outc...

Comparison Between Ticagrelor and Clopidogrel in Elderly Patients with an Acute Coronary Syndrome: Insights from the SWEDEHEART Registry.
Conclusions: Ticagrelor use among elderly MI patients was associated with higher risk of bleeding and death compared with clopidogrel. A randomized study of ticagrelor vs clopidogrel in the elderly is needed. PMID: 32867508 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

A multiple risk factor program  is associated with decreased risk of cardiovascular disease in 70-year-olds: A cohort study from Sweden
ConclusionsIn this study, a primary prevention program was associated with a lower risk of CVD in community-dwelling 70-year-olds. With the limitation of this being an observational study, the associations may partly be explained by improved control of classic risk factors for CVD with the program.

Commentary: Glucose control: Not just a bystander in GLP-1RA-mediated cardiovascular protection
Cardiovascular (CV) disease prevention in type 2 diabetes (T2D) demands multifactorial interventions including treatment of dyslipidemia, hypertension, hypercoagulability, and certainly hyperglycemia [1]. However, randomized controlled trials specifically addressing the impact of intensive glucose control (IGC) on CV outcomes yielded ambiguous results [2], while real-life evidence from a Swedish nationwide registry showed hyperglycemia as the strongest predictor of myocardial infarction (MI) and stroke [3].

Prognostic Value of Circulating Microvesicle Subpopulations in Ischemic Stroke and TIA
AbstractPlatelet microvesicles (PMV) have previously been found elevated in acute ischemic stroke (IS) and could be biomarkers for risk of recurrence. PMV surface antigens such as P-selectin and phosphatidylserine (PS) reflect platelet activation and procoagulance. Tissue factor-positive microvesicles (TF+MV) are considered procoagulant, in particular if co-expressing PS. We enumerated MV subpopulations with these surface antigens in a cohort of 211 patients with primarily non-cardioembolic IS or transient ischemic attack (TIA) and investigated their association with long-term outcome. MV concentrations were determined by ...

Admission glucose level was associated with increased short-term mortality and length-of-stay irrespective of diagnosis, treating medical specialty or concomitant laboratory values.
CONCLUSIONS: Short-term mortality increased substantially with admission hypo- and hyperglycemia for patients both with and without diabetes, irrespective of treating medical specialty, main discharge diagnosis, or concurrent laboratory values. Patients with diabetes (16%) were older, with higher glucose levels at admission, and with a different pattern of the association of admission glucose and mortality. Dog Ownership Linked To 24% Lower Risk Of Dying Early, Research Shows
(CNN) — Need an excellent reason to add a dog to your life? How about living longer? “Our analysis found having a dog is actually protective against dying of any cause,” said Mount Sinai endocrinologist Dr. Caroline Kramer, lead author of a new systematic review of nearly 70 years of global research published Tuesday in “Circulation,” a journal of the American Heart Association. The review of the health benefits of man’s best friend analyzed research involving nearly 4 million people in the United States, Canada, Scandinavia, New Zealand, Australia and the United Kingdom. “Dog owne...
