Interdisciplinary collaboration in the diagnosis and management of chronic cough: the role and importance of primary care providers
The objective of this review is to describe the role of PCPs in the diagnosis and treatment of CC in adults. This narrative review draws upon literature (identified via a PubMed search performed January 9, 2023, using primary care/disease state-related terms) and expertise from specialist physicians to provide recommendations for CC management in primary care. Cough is one of the top reasons patients seek care from PCPs; accordingly, PCPs are often the first physicians to conduct workup and initiate treatment. Patients with CC often experience a burdensome cough that lasts for years, have high healthcare resource utilizati...

Sex-specific differences in physical health and health services use among Canadian Veterans: a retrospective cohort study using healthcare administrative data
Conclusions Female Veterans residing in Ontario, Canada have different chronic health risks and engage in health services use more frequently than their male counterparts. These findings have important healthcare policy and programme planning implications, in order to ensure female Veterans have access to appropriate health services.

Alpha-lipoic acid, apocynin or probiotics influence glutathione status and selected inflammatory parameters in C57/BL6 mice when combined with a low-fat diet
CONCLUSIONS: Supplementation of the tested compounds with LFD appears to have a positive influence on the glutathione redox status of pulmonary tissues and selected inflammatory parameters in mouse blood.PMID:37730940 | DOI:10.1007/s43440-023-00527-8

Prenatal dietary exposure to chemicals and allergy or respiratory diseases in children in the EDEN mother-child cohort
CONCLUSION: Prenatal dietary exposure to chemicals was associated with risk of allergic rhinitis or wheezing up to age 8 y. A few chemicals were associated with other allergic and respiratory diseases. Larger prospective studies are needed to confirm these findings.PMID:37734145 | DOI:10.1016/j.envint.2023.108195

Omalizumab for Chinese patients with moderate-to-severe allergic asthma in real-world clinical setting: a prospective, observational study
CONCLUSIONS: In real-world clinical practice, omalizumab treatment remarkably reduced exacerbations in Chinese patients with moderate-to-severe asthma. Omalizumab reduced the use of oral corticosteroids and improved asthma control and pulmonary function.PMID:37734750 | DOI:10.1136/bmjresp-2022-001549

Chronic Respiratory Diseases as a Risk Factor for Herpes Zoster Infection
CONCLUSIONS: In a standard clinical practice setting, the most prevalent respiratory diseases (asthma, COPD and lung cancer) are related to a higher risk of HZ and PHN. These data are fundamental to assess the potential impact of vaccination in this population.PMID:37734964 | DOI:10.1016/j.arbres.2023.08.010

Effects of low concentrations of ozone gas exposure on percutaneous oxygen saturation and inflammatory responses in a mouse model of Dermatophagoides farinae-induced asthma
Arch Toxicol. 2023 Sep 21. doi: 10.1007/s00204-023-03593-2. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTOzone gas is widely used in hospitals as well as homes to control COVID-19 infection owing to its cost-effectiveness. Safety standard value and the tolerable value of ozone gas are set at 0.05 ppm and 0.1 ppm, respectively, in developed countries; however, this value was principally determined for healthy individuals, and the risks associated with ozone gas inhalation in patients with pulmonary diseases remains unknown. Recently, we demonstrated that 0.1 ppm ozone gas exposure significantly aggravates the symptoms of acute lung injury...

IL18R1-Related Molecules as Biomarkers for Asthma Severity and Prognostic Markers for Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis
J Proteome Res. 2023 Sep 21. doi: 10.1021/acs.jproteome.3c00389. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTo determine the role of inflammation-related proteins in predicting asthma severity and outcome, 92 inflammation-related proteins were measured in the asthmatic serum using Olink analysis. Different bioinformatics algorithms were developed to cross analyze with the single-cell or transcriptome data sets from the Gene Expression Omnibus database to explore the role of IL18R1 and related genes in asthma and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). Olink identified 52 differentially expressed proteins in asthma. They were strongly link...

Life ‐threatening bronchospasm induced by an angiotensin‐converting enzyme inhibitor in a chronically ventilated patient: Diagnostic pitfalls and literature review
We report a 68-year-old female residing in a long-term acute-care facility for patients requiring prolonged invasive mechanical ventilation treated for years with ACEi. Daily reversible bouts of life-threatening severe bronchospasm gradually developed over 6  weeks and abruptly resolved following the cessation of ACEi treatment. The late appearance of bronchospasm and the unique clinical setup of chronic invasive ventilation in a patient with smoking-related chronic obstructive lung disease are among the principal confounders that delay the identifica tion of the causative association between ACEi and respiratory comprom...

Noncardiac comorbidities and intensive up ‐titration of oral treatment in patients recently hospitalized for heart failure: insights from the STRONG‐HF trial
ConclusionsIn the STRONG-HF trial, non-cardiac comorbidities neither limited the rapid up-titration of HF-therapies, nor attenuated the benefit of HIC on primary endpoint. In the context of a clinical trial, the benefit-risk ratio favors the rapid up-titration of HF-therapies even in patients with multiple NCCsThis article is protected by copyright.
