Causes of ischemic stroke in young adults versus non-young adults: A multicenter hospital-based observational study
CONCLUSIONS: Certain embolic sources and uncommon causes may be etiologically important causes of ischemic stroke in young adults. Cardio-embolic stroke: Lessons from a single centre in Sub-Saharan Africa.
CONCLUSION: CES accounted for 1/4 of ischemic stroke with a high risk of early death and long-term recurrence. Atrial fibrillation was the leading cause of CES. The contribution of systematic implementation of cardiovascular explorations for the detection of cardiac sources of embolism in patients with stroke: About 230  patients.
CONCLUSION: Cardiovascular explorations remain indispensable in the workup of all ischemic strokes even if their therapeutic effect is modest. Cardioembolic stroke and cardiomyopathy: Rhythm is the key
Cardiomyopathy (CM) predisposes patients to cardioembolism. Stroke and peripheral embolization occur at an annual incidence rate of 0.8% in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) [1]. Embolic events have an incidence rate ranging from 1.5 to 3.5 per 100 patient-years in dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) [2]. However, few studies have described the clinical profile of ischemic stroke associated with CM.

Perioperative changes of the slope in the preload recruitable stroke work relationship by a single-beat technique after mitral valve surgery in functional mitral regurgitation with non-ischemic dilated cardiomyopathy
ConclusionsThe change of slope was dependent on surgical procedures. In functional mitral regurgitation, the slope may be a more sensitive parameter in reflecting the left ventricular contractile function than the left ventricular ejection fraction.

Anticoagulation versus placebo for heart failure in sinus rhythm
CONCLUSIONS: Based on the three RCTs, there is no evidence that oral anticoagulant therapy modifies mortality in people with HF in sinus rhythm. The evidence is uncertain if warfarin has any effect on all-cause death compared to placebo or no treatment, but it may increase the risk of major bleeding events. There is no evidence of a difference in the effect of rivaroxaban on all-cause death compared to placebo. It probably reduces the risk of stroke, but probably increases the risk of major bleedings. A review of the epidemiology of atrial fibrillation in Sub ‐Saharan Africa
In conclusion, AF seems to have a higher prevalence in the general population than previously thought, and is mostly associa ted with hypertension, cardiomyopathy and rheumatic heart disease in SSA. It is associated with a high incidence of heart failure and stroke. Low-dose dobutamine induces left ventricular mechanical dyssynchrony in patients with dilated cardiomyopathy and a narrow QRS: a study using real-time three-dimensional echocardiography.

Anticoagulation versus placebo for heart failure in sinus rhythm.
CONCLUSIONS: Based on the two major randomised trials (HELAS 2006; WASH 2004), there is no convincing evidence that oral anticoagulant therapy modifies mortality or vascular events in patients with heart failure and sinus rhythm. Although oral anticoagulation is indicated in certain groups of patients with heart failure (for example those with atrial fibrillation), the available data does not support the routine use of anticoagulation in heart failure patients who remain in sinus rhythm.
