Epidemiology of oral cancer in Arab countries.
CONCLUSION: No solid evidence exists regarding the true OC prevalence/incidence in most Arab countries due to the lack of national cancer registries and population-based studies. PMID: 26905345 [PubMed - in process]

The Advantages of Dermoscopy in the Diagnosis of Acral Melanoma from Other Podiatric Lesions: A Literature Review.
CONCLUSIONS: The use of dermoscopy is slowly evolving in podiatry. It aims to minimize the amount of biopsies taken, thereby decreasing the risk of creating an ulcer and reducing the patients exposure to anesthesia. While controversy remains over sensitivity and specificity of using a dermatoscope alone to diagnose pedal lesions, particular attention should be paid to the accuracy of diagnosing a lesion when dermoscopy is used in conjunction with a biopsy. With the continued usage of a dermatoscope along with experience and expertise in the field, the need for a biopsy could eventually be eliminated. PMID: 27649397 [P...

Evaluation of Potential Risk Factors that contribute to Malignant Transformation of Oral Lichen Planus: A Literature Review.
CONCLUSION: In this evidence base, malignant transformation ranges from 0 to 37% with a mean of 4.59%. The highest rate of malignancy was noted in erythematosus and erosive lesions. In this way, follow-up of OLP patients could be carried out more efficiently and appropriately. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Oral lichen planus is a premalignant lesion. All types of OLP in any site of oral mucosa must be monitored regularly. PMID: 27659090 [PubMed - in process]

Self-efficacy and comfort with partner-assisted skin examination in patients receiving follow-up care for melanoma
The objective of this study was to examine the role of interpersonal variables on melanoma survivors’ self-efficacy for performing skin self-examinations (SSEs) during melanoma follow-up care. Specifically, the impact of comfort with partner assistance for SSE, SSE support received from one’s partner, general partner support, relationship satisfaction, as well as partner attendance at a SSE education session, were examined. One hundred and thirty-seven patients with melanoma between the ages of 18 and 70 years, who also reported being involved in a romantic relationship, received a standardized education on SSE, and co...

Risk of peripheral edema in cancer patients treated with MEK inhibitors: a systematic review and meta-analysis of clinical trials.
CONCLUSION: This meta-analysis reveals that the use of MEK inhibitors is associated with an increased risk of peripheral edema in cancer patients. Oncologists should be aware of the risk and perform regular assessment. PMID: 28665153 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

The changing landscape of dermatology practice: melanoma and pump-probe laser microscopy
AbstractTo present current melanoma diagnosis, staging, prognosis, and treatment algorithms and how recent advances in laser pump-probe microscopy will fill in the gaps in our clinical understanding. Expert opinion and significantly cited articles identified in SCOPUS were used in conjunction with a pubmed database search on Melanoma practice guidelines from the last 10  years. Significant advances in melanoma treatment have been made over the last decade. However, proper treatment algorithm and prognostic information per melanoma stage remain controversial. The next step for providers will involve the identification of p...

Salivary Chemical Factors in Relation with Oral Cancer in Smokers and Non-Smokers: a Literature Review
Squamous cell carcinoma of oral cavity is of malignant tumors, which causes cancerous complications. DNA damage, mainly because of products of oxidative stress like reactive oxygen species, is a frequent mutagenic that triggers carcinoma. Smoking increases the probability of cancer incidence. Saliva is the first biological medium to interact with external compounds, especially smoking substances. The present study overviews the salivary level of some remarkable compounds in relation with smoking and squamous cell carcinoma. To collect data, English literature was searched in databases including PubMed, ScienceDirect and Goo...

Investigation on the regulatory effect of PGE2 on ESCC cells through the trans-activation of EGFR by EP2 and the relevant mechanism.
CONCLUSIONS: Through cell experiments, we verified that the combination of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and EP2, the subtype receptor of PGE2, could trans-activate the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) to regulate the proliferation and invasion capability of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) cells, and secrete and express multiple cytokines, thus discovering the pathological mechanism of inflammation to carcinoma transition in the occurrence of ESCC, and providing the experimental evidence for the search of new target in the treatment of ESCC. ESCC cells can highly express the receptor subtype EP2 of PGE2 that can...

Contemporary practice patterns of stereotactic radiosurgery for brain metastasis: A review of published Australian literature
SummaryThere has been a shift in the management of brain metastasis (BM), with increasing use of stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) and delaying/avoiding whole ‐brain radiotherapy (WBRT), given the concern regarding the long‐term neurocognitive effect and quality of life impact of WBRT. It is, however, unclear as to the contemporary practice pattern and outcomes of SRS in Australia. We conducted a literature search in PubMed and MEDLINE using a series of keywords: ‘stereotactic’, ‘radiosurgery’ and ‘brain metastases’, limiting to Australian studies, which report on clinical outcomes following SRS. Eight studie...
