Parasitological contamination of arable soil in selected regions of Poland - preliminary study
CONCLUSIONS: Differences in the percentage of positive samples were found depending on the period in which the samples were taken. The percentage of positive samples collected in autumn (53.57%) was higher than the percentage of positive samples collected in spring (48.05%). Similarly, the average number of eggs of in positive samples collected in autumn (3.43 eggs/100 g) was higher than the average number of eggs in samples collected in spring (2.90 eggs/100 g). Differences in the percentage of positive samples were also found depending on the region of origin of the samples.PMID:38153069 | DOI:10.26444/aaem/176816 (Sourc...

Toxocara canis-induced changes in host intestinal microbial communities
Toxocara canis is a roundworm that resides in the gastrointestinal tract of dogs and causes various pathological changes. The dog ’s intestinal system consists of a diverse and dynamic bacterial community that has... (Source: Parasites and Vectors)

Metabolite profiling of Trichinella spiralis adult worms and muscle larvae identifies their excretory and secretory products
In this study, metabolite profiles of T. spiralis adult worms and muscle larvae were obtained using mass spectrometry-based metabolomics. In addition, metabolite-based biomarkers of T. spiralis excretory–secretory products and their related metabolic pathways were characterized. The metabolic profiling identified major, related metabolic pathways involving adenosine monophosphate (AMP)-dependent synthetase/ligase and glycolysis/gluconeogenesis in T. spiralis adult worms and muscle larvae, respectively. These pathways are potential drug targets for the treatment of the intestinal and muscular phases of infection. The meta...

Two distinct mechanisms lead to either oocyte or spermatocyte decrease in < i > C < /i > . < i > elegans < /i > after whole developmental exposure to γ-rays
by Elizabeth Dufourcq Sekatcheff, Christian Godon, Aymeric Bailly, Lo ïc Quevarec, Virginie Camilleri, Simon Galas, Sandrine Frelon Wildlife is subject to various sources of pollution, including ionizing radiation. Adverse effects can impact the survival, growth, or reproduction of organisms, later affecting population dynamics. In invertebrates, reproduction, which directly impacts population dynamics, has been found to be th e most radiosensitive endpoint. Understanding the underlying molecular pathways inducing this reproduction decrease can help to comprehend species-specific differences in radiosensitivity. From our...

Cross-Sectional Study of Soil-Transmitted Helminthiases in Black Belt Region of Alabama, USA
Emerg Infect Dis. 2023 Dec;29(12):2461-2470. doi: 10.3201/eid2912.230751.ABSTRACTWe conducted a cross-sectional study to determine the prevalence of soil-transmitted helminthiases (STH) in areas of rural Alabama, USA, that have sanitation deficits. We enrolled 777 children; 704 submitted stool specimens and 227 a dried blood spot sample. We microscopically examined stool specimens from all 704 children by using Mini-FLOTAC for helminth eggs. We tested a subset by using molecular techniques: real-time PCR analysis for 5 STH species, TaqMan Array Cards for enteric helminths, and digital PCR for Necator americanus hookworm. W...
