Long COVID in a highly vaccinated but largely unexposed Australian population following the 2022 SARS-CoV-2 Omicron wave: a cross-sectional survey
CONCLUSION: Ninety days after infection with the Omicron SARS-CoV-2 variant, 18.2% of survey respondents reported symptoms consistent with long COVID, of whom 38.7% (7.1% of all survey respondents) sought health care for related health concerns two to three months after the acute infection.PMID:38508863 | DOI:10.5694/mja2.52256 (Source: Medical Journal of Australia)

Tobacco use, self-reported professional dental cleaning habits, and lung adenocarcinoma diagnosis are associated with bronchial and lung microbiome alpha diversity
CONCLUSIONS: Current tobacco use, recent dental cleaning, and a diagnosis of adenocarcinoma are associated with lung and bronchial microbiome α-diversity, composition (β-diversity), and the abundance of several respiratory pathogens. These findings suggest that modifiable habits (tobacco use and dental care) may influence the lower airway microbiome. Larger controlled studies to investigate these potential associations are warranted.PMID:38500160 | DOI:10.1186/s12931-024-02750-0 (Source: Respiratory Care)

Tobacco use, self-reported professional dental cleaning habits, and lung adenocarcinoma diagnosis are associated with bronchial and lung microbiome alpha diversity
The lung microbiome is an inflammatory stimulus whose role in the development of lung malignancies is incompletely understood. We hypothesized that the lung microbiome associates with multiple clinical factors... (Source: Respiratory Research)

Regulation of astrocyte metabolism by mitochondrial translocator protein 18  kDa
Astrocytes are key players in maintaining central nervous system (CNS) homeostasis. Proper control of cellular bioenergetics is essential for this, and poor control of astrocyte bioenergetics may underlie many CNS conditions. We hypothesized that translocator protein 18  kDa (TSPO) regulates the metabolism of astrocytes and thus serves as a therapeutic target. In two models, TSPO deficiency reduced bioenergetic rates and lactate release, while promoting bioenergetic resistance to glucose withdrawal and fatty acid oxidation (FAO). Following lipopolysaccharide (LPS ) stimulation, TSPO deficient astrocytes showed no change ...
