Polynucleotides and Hyaluronic Acid (PN-HA) Mixture With or Without Deproteinized Bovine Bone Mineral as a Novel Approach for the Treatment of Deep Infra-Bony Defects: A Retrospective Case-Series
Int J Periodontics Restorative Dent. 2024 Feb 16;0(0):1-24. doi: 10.11607/prd.7065. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPolynucleotides and Hyaluronic Acid (PN-HA) mixture showed several effects in modulation of healing process. The aim of this study was to assess the safety and clinical performance of PN-HA alone or in association with Deproteinized Bovine Bone Mineral (DBBM) with papillary preservation flaps (PPF) in the treatment of residual pockets. A total of 43 patients with 55 infra-bony defects were recruited; 30% were smokers. The mean baseline Probing Depth (PD) was 7.7 ±1.9 mm with a corresponding mean recession (Rec...

ZAGA Double Pedicle Palatal Flap for Soft Tissue Management in Zygomatic Surgery
Int J Periodontics Restorative Dent. 2024 Feb 16;0(0):1-23. doi: 10.11607/prd.7048. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTOral rehabilitation of the atrophic maxilla using prostheses anchored on zygomatic implants is a well-documented process. To prevent the risk of sinusitis and or oro-antral communications, the placement of zygomatic implants with an externalized path has been proposed. In these cases where the sealing of the implant neck depends exclusively on a hemidesmosomal junction, there is a risk of dehiscence of the soft tissue. This can lead to esthetic problems, bone resorption, oro antral communication, cellulitis, an...

Assessing the Impact of Stem Cell-based Therapy on Periodontal Health: A Meta-analysis of Clinical Studies
CONCLUSION: In conclusion, while stem cell-based therapy offers promising prospects for periodontal defect treatment, there are notable limitations in the current body of research. Larger, multicenter, double-blind RCTs with robust methodologies are needed to provide more reliable evidence for stem cell-based intervention in periodontitis.PMID:38347778 | DOI:10.2174/011574888X294900240130095058 (Source: Current Stem Cell Research and Therapy)

Thoracic-abdominal recession to preserve thickness of adipose layer in radical mastectomy patients: A clinically relevant anatomical pocket
Breast surgery has become one of the most common surgeries in females, due to the increasing incidence of breast disease. A detailed understanding of the characteristics of the anatomical structure of the breast and chest wall is an important aspect of complication-free surgery. While the anatomy of the abdominal and thoracic facia is well described, some anatomical details have not been fully explained. Specifically, the different rates of accumulation of postoperative fluid within the upper lateral abdominal quadrant and lower region of the mammary footprint suggest that there is an anatomical predisposition in certain p...

Surgical management of complex lumbosacral anomaly with minimally invasive spinal fusion: A clinical image
Key Clinical MessageLumbosacral junction anomalies represent a rather frequent finding in patients with low back pain. Involved healthcare professionals should be familiar with these dysplasias, in order to achieve proper diagnosis and optimize clinical outcomes.AbstractDysplastic alterations in lumbosacral junction represent a frequent finding in patients with low back pain. Lumbosacral transitional vertebra (LSTV), spina bifida occulta (SBO) and isthmic spondylolisthesis (IS) present recognized etiologies of low back pain. Herein, we present a rare case of concurrent presence of LSTV, SBO and IS in a middle-aged male ind...

Corneal tomography changes following major (6 mm) medial rectus muscle recession: a prospective cohort study using Pentacam ®
DISCUSSION: The changes in total astigmatism of the operated eyes are mainly attributed to the anterior corneal surface. These changes are associated with flattening in the 180 meridian of the cornea, leading to a shift to "with-the-rule" astigmatism.PMID:38311603 | DOI:10.1080/09273972.2024.2311094 (Source: Strabismus)

The Dynamics of Inequality and Poverty Among Children in Colombia During the COVID-19 Recession
This study examines the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the income, inequality, and poverty levels among Colombian children between 2019 and 2020, using data from the Luxembourg Income Study Database. The income distribution and changes among Colombian children are analyzed using the probability density function and growth incidence curve. The paper utilizes the Foster –Greer–Thorbecke methodology to measure child poverty in Colombia, decomposes the contributions of different subgroups to child poverty and its changes, and conducts a growth-distribution decomposition of changes in child poverty. The study also emplo...

Impact of 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) health center investments on disadvantaged neighborhoods after recession
ConclusionsDirect funding to HCs may be an effective strategy to support healthcare establishments and some jobs recovery in disadvantaged neighborhoods during recession, reinforcing the important multidimensional roles HCs play in these communities. However, HCs may benefit from additional investments that target upstream determinants of health to mitigate uneven recovery and neighborhood decline. (Source: Health Economics Review)
