Thoracic-abdominal recession to preserve thickness of adipose layer in radical mastectomy patients: A clinically relevant anatomical pocket

Breast surgery has become one of the most common surgeries in females, due to the increasing incidence of breast disease. A detailed understanding of the characteristics of the anatomical structure of the breast and chest wall is an important aspect of complication-free surgery. While the anatomy of the abdominal and thoracic facia is well described, some anatomical details have not been fully explained. Specifically, the different rates of accumulation of postoperative fluid within the upper lateral abdominal quadrant and lower region of the mammary footprint suggest that there is an anatomical predisposition in certain patients.
