How Do I Know If I'm Cut Out For It
I'm an MS with an inclination for psychiatry, I already finished my clinical rotation which was 2 months in a general psychiatry practice where most of what psychiatrists did was prescribe meds and refer to psychologists if patients needed CBT (I'm pretty sure it's the only type of psychotherapy done at our institution), I still found it really interesting. But I wonder whether I have the aptitude to actually be a psychotherapist and sit through DBT or CBT sessions and be able to master... Wanting to work is mental health RN/PA/NP
Hi everyone, My dream is to work in mental health and probably relocate back to Northern VA where I was born. I'd like to be able to prescribe meds and do psychotherapy and such. I was pre-med in college but unsure if I want to continue to med school. I have been reading about the psychiatric NP and it seems very interesting. Anyone have any thoughts on this? Seems like in many ways it would be better (more freedom) that a PA in psychiatry. Or maybe I should just do the year post bacc... Best route for a international career changer for psychotherapy
Fellows, please advice on the best/shortest/most affordable way to become a licensed counsellor/psychotherapist in the US (California, Oregon, or Washington). This is my end goal though I have not desided yet on the specialization. Now I think I would be interested in helping teens and adults, so maybe Marriage and Family Therapy would be the best area for me. Also I am interested in computer-human interaction and social psychology areas. As you can see, I am totally lost but very... Billing for Med management & Psychotherapy - 99214 + 90833
I see my follow-ups for 30-minutes, and I'm having a hard time seeing in my mind how I don't end up billing most of my follow-up visits as level 4 (99214) visits with a psychotherapy add-on code (90833). I am doing psychotherapy for more than 16 minutes with most of my patients, and if you look at the criteria for a level 4, it's hard not to hit that threshold. Legitimately, any patient with 3 chronic illnesses (e.g, MDD, Anxiety NOS, Insomnia) is a level 4 visit: E.g., 3 stable illnesses... How can a psychiatrist learn psychotherapy?
Do you have to get a PhD. in psychology or something too? A class? Training. Say a psychiatrist is serving in an area with not a lot of mental healthcare. And the patient wants talk, not just meds. Where do you learn that or add that skill to your repertoire? Psychiatrists used to do both, not just scribble out drug names on pieces of paper. Even if it isn't lucrative, how can I go about doing both properly? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Is psychotherapy dead in psychiatry?
Sorry for the dramatic title, but I'm a medical student considering psychiatry as a specialty and I was hoping I might get some enlightening answers here. Please excuse any of the naivete I reveal in this post... I was curious what percentage of psychiatrists still spend most of their days in 50 minute psychotherapy sessions. I believe there is a definite place for antidepressants, etc., but I am interested in a career where I can develop long term therapeutic relationships with... Is psychotherapy dead in psychiatry? Psychiatry and Psychotherapy?
I know that psychiatrists as a whole tend not to utilize psychotherapy as often as they used to years ago because their services in terms of medication management and such are more valued... therefore the therapy is often done by psychologists and social workers. With that said, I read that some psychiatry residencies are doing away with teaching psychoanalysis in their programs and others want to do away with psychotherapy training all together and instead implement more neuroscience... "Unlicensed Psychotherapists"
It is my understanding that in most states, the practice of psychotherapy is regulated. In my state, Colorado, it is not practice but rather titles/terms that are protected... to include terms such as "psychologist", "psychology", "licensed", or "marriage and family therapist". This being the case, my state allows anyone who passes a short jurisprudence exam and pays a filing fee to be listed in a database of "unlicensed psychotherapists". Technically, someone with a 3rd grade education... "Unlicensed Psychotherapists" (Source: Student Doctor Network)

School or Clinical for Testing and Assessment with Child/Adolescent Populations
I've heard a couple of different opinions from personal connections and would like to pose this question to those with more experience in the psychology fields: Which would be the most and least beneficial doctoral level programs for working with children and adolescents: clinical, school, or combined? What I would like to do, ideally, is to work doing some testing and assessment and some psychotherapy. I do love working directly with children, and I've always had great quantitative and... Unethical classroom activity
I'm on a psychotherapy degree course. So in class the tutors got us to look at a case study. They made comments hinting that it was about me and I felt belittled. The funny thing is that it didn't describe me except for one similarity. The irony is that, perhaps without them realising, the description/analysis summed up one of my classmates, and my classmate got quite upset and paranoid afterwards. Anyway, I felt it was very unethical for counselling professionals to make people feel unsafe... Unethical classroom activity (Source: Student Doctor Network)

PsychCentral Forum
Hi, I was a PA-C in psychiatry and have had a couple of patients using the PSYCHOTHERAPY thread at Psych Central. I perused the thread and wasn't impressed with it. I found users to be engaged in a little enabling behavior, manipulative behavior against psychologists and psychiatrists, discussions on how to avoid a hospital admission when suicidal, etc. Has anyone been on this site? Incoming MS1 Interested in Child/Adolescent Psych
Hello all, I am getting ready to start my first year of medical school and I am very interested in psychiatry. I am finishing up my M.S. in Psychology. I started it as a Clinical Psychology program, so I have learned the basics of psychotherapy, intellectual assessment, as well as psychopathology and basic psychopharm. I ended up changing to general psych when I found I was getting into medical school so I could take the degree. What are some things that I can do early on in medical school...
