Psychotherapy certifications: The good, the bad, and the grifty
Setting aside 95% of the PESI catalogue for trainings in internal polyvagal complex intergenerational trauma systems therapy that the biased science can't possibly measure, how necessary are psychotherapy certifications for responsible, independent practice? For instance, if I've received training and supervision in both cognitive therapy and mindfulness skills, do I really need to now become certified in mindfulness based cognitive therapy or can I just put those two things together after... MS3 need advice choosing: IM vs. psych
Hi, I'm applying for residency this year and struggling to choose a specialty - psych vs. IM. If I do IM, I'll likely pursue endocrinology since I enjoy working in clinic and don't love procedures. Here are what I see as the pros/cons - I appreciate any input! Psych pros: -ability to run my own practice/work outside of a hospital setting -I'm really interested in psychotherapy, and I enjoyed reading my psychiatry textbook -I hate working nights, and psych offers opportunity for a regular... Advise: insurance fraud?
So I usually hang out on the premed forums, but I got this job offer working in a psychiatric private practice. I went in for training and noticed many red flags with the psychiatrist. He charges $250 for medication management and psychotherapy to insurance (100 out of pocket) but spends less than 5 minutes with each patient. Patient files are paper but the only thing in them are printer paper that has a few scribbles on it (nothing legible, not like his actual hand writing). So my question... Threats to audit from insurance companies
Got a letter recently from the only insurance company I panel with that I'm billing too many 99214's and 90833's. Somewhere in the 80% range. Everyone at our practice got this letter. My follow ups are all 30 minutes, and the vast majority of my patients have at least two chronic conditions with med management (my understanding is this is enough for 99214 with MDM) and I document supportive, CBT and family work. It's usually 10 minutes for meds and 20 minutes for psychotherapy. Not everyone... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

What's Corrections Psychiatry Like?
Can anyone opine on the pros and cons of prison psychiatry? I have a very busy and intense hospital job at the moment, and it will be impossible to achieve some of my other goals while I'm working this much (namely, getting some advanced psychotherapy training). I'm looking for something more structured, with less call, less cross-coverage of other services etc. My thought is that a corrections job may have a slower pace and less pressure to be stretched in a million different directions... Addiction Psychotherapy Resources
PGY2 here For various reasons, I was involuntary assigned to our addictions ward for 6 more months. The first 6 months that I rotated there I focused on research and other academic things. I did fine with the medical/pharmacological aspect of addiction medicine. But I didn't really do anything related to psychotherapy and left that instead to the ward's psychologists. This time around I want to emphasize psychotherapy. Any good books or resources? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Social work realistic salaries
Hello all, I am currently enrolled in a BSW program in Florida. I am interested in psychotherapy, school social work and medical social work, but I was curious of the salaries that people receive during their first years out of their training for LCSW/out of their MSW, or even down the line. Any info would be great, even rough estimates! Thanks in advance. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Employer Pushing for Psychotherapy Addons
Hi all. I just started with a telepsych company and they are asking me to do follow up appointments as a 20 minute slot 99214 with a 16 minute 90833 add-on for most or all patients. I asked for an extended follow up for one patient due to her complexity and they said to do a 40 minute appointment 99214 with a 38 minute therapy add on. To me it seems hard to justify that the patient showed up perfectly on time, we didn't end a single minute early, and I did 2 minutes of med management with... Assessment side hustle for generalist psychologists
Hi All, I am an early career psychologist in a major metro area seeking information on how to incorporate assessment into my practice. Throughout my graduate career, I did mostly psychotherapy and intakes at various externship/internship/postdoc at hospital, counseling center, and community mental health settings. I did only about 7 integrated batteries throughout my entire training. I went to a very decent program, but I feel I have basic competency in assessment at best, as my program... Psychotherapy as a psychiatrist
I'm a med student, and during my psych clerkship I learned that some psychiatrists actually fall in love with therapy and make most of their career doing therapy with patients, and only a small part prescribing. Is that actually something feasible to do with psychiatry? And if you know people who do it, do they bill similarly to a psychologist or would they bill more? I'm just wondering how patients can afford to have a psychiatrist as a therapist... The concept is new to me and I just... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

EMDR and DoD/VA PTSD Clinical Practice Guidelines
Hi all, I've been hearing that EMDR doesn't have much research support for treating combat-related PTSD, and the studies I've found seem to support that (like https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/21635781.2013.827088). So, now I'm wondering, does anyone know why the DoD/VA 2017 CPG included EMDR as a frontline psychotherapy for PTSD, alongside PE and CPT? I looked at the guidelines and the studies they referenced in support of EMDR were not with combat veterans. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Non-psychiatrists practicing psychiatry
It seems like out of all the specialties, psychiatry has the most non-psychiatry trained physicians practicing psychiatry and psychotherapy. I've seen emergency medicine physicians, family medicine physicians, ob/gyns, pediatricians, and even anesthesiologists who have mental health outpatient clinics and claim to do psychotherapy. This is especially common in ketamine-assisted psychotherapy. Do other specialties also have this same thing happening where physicians who not board... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)
