billing and coding..
1) Can you use 99213/99214 E&M code and use add-on 90833 psychotherapy code for a 20 minute f/u visit? 2) Can you use 99204/99205 E&M code for a 60 min new eval and also use 90838 psychotherapy code since you are seeing the patient >53 face-to-face? (or use 90836 if the visit ends somewhere around 38-52 min...?) Thanks for all the experts on the coding and billing subject..! (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Income expectations?
I’m an employed psychiatrist. I work for a hospital system that thus far has been really good to me. About a year ago I asked to expand my psychotherapy patients from a handful to half of my practice. They agreed. Since this time, a few nps have left and they are starting to make statements about improving access that give me the impression they might ask me to forgo therapy to see more patients. I can’t go back to that model full time. I love practicing psychotherapy and feel passionate... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

general psychologist typical work week
So looking at my geographic area, it says the average salary is $97,350 a year translating to $45 an hour. Which adds up to 41 hours a week assuming no vacation (becomes 45 hours a week with 4 weeks vacation). I'm trying to figure out how these numbers come to be? But also, time and work is precious and I'd like to see first hand what typical work weeks you see. This is for say, providing general psychotherapy 1:1 to an adult population. Like, is it 28 therapy sessions a week and rest of... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Emory vs Michigan vs UNC vs Utah
Hey y'all, Struggling a bit with ranking these four programs and would be grateful for some help. I love all that Emory has to offer regarding diversity of training and psychotherapy but am not as excited about living in Atlanta. On the other hand, living in Salt Lake City would be a dream and I loved Utah's program, but am concerned by the psychotherapy training and diversity of training in general. Psych Interests: - med ed stuff - psychotherapy (can see myself doing further... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

How to approach pre-clinical years for Psych?
I'm going to be starting my first year this fall at a D.O. school and just wanted to get a sense of how to approach my interest in psychiatry. I have been working as a guardian advocate at a local mental health facility where I get to see some of the psychotherapy and clinical aspects of psych, and I really find it interesting and something I might want to pursue. I think last year only 74% of D.O.'s got to match psych, but it was 85% in 2020. While I know that many end up changing their... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

What is a skill residency didn't prepare you well on for your career and one that did?
When trying to rank my programs, I realized each program was unique, either with more psychotherapy or neuro based, different variety of populations, different experts, ect. So what skillset from residency did you wish you learned from residency, and what skillset did the residency program teach you that was valuable to your practice/job/outside of work? The psychotherapy subreddit has gone Private. What are everyone ’s thoughts on this?
r/psychotherapy is now Private as of about 3 months ago. In order to obtain membership, you must be a licensed and practicing professional. The application process requires you to submit a photocopy of your ID, psychotherapy license, and your graduate school transcripts in order to obtain access. What are your thoughts about one of the major public online spaces for therapist discussion going this route? Personally, I am quite upset. I have been licensed for 4 years now as a Clinical... Cornell versus MGH for psychiatry training
Hi guys, I am trying to build my psychiatry residency rank list right now. Cornell and MGH are both at the top of my list. I think both would have strong opportunities for psychotherapy training which is important to me, as well as opportunities for mentorship in my areas of interest. I would really like to live in NYC both for the diverse patient population and because it seems like a great city to experience, especially for a defined time of the four years of residency. However I am... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Notes not individualized enough - 90833
A friend of mine is having problems with Blue-cross paying for 90833. He is providing supportive psychotherapy and documenting as such but they have been telling him the notes are not individualized enough . He is at a loss to understand what this means. Is the insurance company dictating what type of notes the psychiatrist writes? Does any one else have a similar problem? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Patient vs Client: Democratization or Corporatization of Psychiatry
I had been listening to some interesting talks about the corporatization of education in America and universities starting to model their education system after businesses and the corporate structure. The guy mentioned that some universities had started to think about calling students "clients" instead. I searched a bit and found this article which made some interesting points: 4 Reasons to Say 'Patient' Instead of 'Client' — Mark Ettensohn, Psy.D. It's an unspoken rule that we don't treat patients ...

Clinical Differences Between Psychologist and Psychiatrist
As the title states, I'm wondering about any differences there might be between psychiatrists and psychologists as it relates to their respective capacities for clinical work. Are there types of mental illnesses that a psychologist can treat that a psychiatrist can't? I know that psychiatrists receive clinical training during their residency, but I also heard they can't treat certain mental illnesses like phobias for example because their clinical psychotherapy training isn't as extensive...
