How I billed $800,000 worth of services in 2022 and how I plan to reach $1,000,000 in 2023.
First, let me say that it will be essentially impossible to reach these figures without offering some form of group psychotherapy. One to one services cannot be scaled and therefore will always be hard-capped by the number of hours you’re willing to work. Groups have a cap too, but the cap is higher. Let me start by showing you my daily schedule and the associated CPT codes: 8:30am – 9:00am Psychological Testing Feedback Session (90832) 9:00am – 11:00am Intensive outpatient group... Rank Order List! Please help
Could someone help me rank my Categorical Psychiatry programs - Rutgers New Jersey Medical School (NJMS), University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), Kansas University Medical Center (KUMC), Texas Tech Lubbock, and SUNY Upstate (Syracuse NY)??? Or give me some advice on which of them to make my #1? I'm leaning towards NJMS or UAB. Interests: Primarily psychotherapy. Would prefer to have VA and community rotations, and good forensic exposure. Not interested in a Child/Adolescent fellowship... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

What setting/subspecialty of psychiatry do you like/hate the most, and why?
Inpatient, outpatient, emergency, CL, addiction, child, forensics, geri, neuropsych, neuromodulation, etc I'm wondering the same for those that have psychotherapy as a large part of their practice (Source: Student Doctor Network)

So How Is Everyone Interpreting 90833?
I'm wondering how everyone here interprets the 90833 psychotherapy add-on code. If I am working on cognitive distortions or introducing the CBT model, it's simple--I document the therapy and move on. But I am finding a lot of my therapeutic work is supportive. I'm failing to see why almost every 30 minute follow-up with a psychiatrist wouldn't have a 90833 attached to it? I have not been coding that way, but the more I think about it, I wonder if I should. For the people who see 30 minute... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Potential imposter?
I was looking for psychologists around me to do some market analysis for my own private practice, and I stumbled across this person's website. To be honest, I am unsure if this person is licensed by any behavioral health board (e.g., social work, LPC, psychologist, etc.). Their website seems to be worded in a manner that actively avoids using terms like "psychologist, therapy, psychotherapy, etc." What are your thoughts? Is this person practicing without a license? Is this a reportable... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Questions for psychotherapists about branching out into Psych NP
In scouring this forum I've seen a couple psychologists mention going back to school to attain a psych NP to allow them the ability to prescribe. Has anyone had or known of any experiences like these? Wouldn't this make for a great business model and niche for private practice if you could find an agreeable psychiatrist to pair with? Or one could possibly work for a hospital as a nurse and pursue a small psychotherapy practice on the side... The problem I'm facing as someone debating... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Training in Psychotherapy
Psych resident in Germany here. As part of our training we need 250 hours of supervised Psychotherapy. And an extra 150 Hours of Psychotherapy ourselves (as patients) We have to chose between 3 types of Psychotherapy *Cognitive Behavioral *Depth Psychology (Tiefenpsychologie), basically modified Psychoanalysis. *Systemic therapy I was leaning more towards Deep Psychology (Tiefenpsychologie) because I've been interested in the works of Freud and Jung, and it also dabs into other personal... Psychotherapy-heavy residencies
Before I start, I know there's debate on the utility of psychotherapy in psychiatry. Maybe y'all will say I should have been a PsyD. That's not the focus of what I'm asking. I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations on residency programs that are very heavy on psychotherapy that are not research powerhouses (ex. Harvard programs, Yale, NYU, NYP etc). That caveat's important to me because I don't go to a powerhouse medical school that attracts these programs. Specific things... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Thoughts about equine therapy
I have a great opportunity to provide some of my patients with an opportunity to interact with horses since one of my interns has a farm and horses. I completely believe in therapeutic benefits of said activity, but also have strong feelings about making therapeutic activities into the equivalent or superior to the evidence-based psychotherapy that we provide. I don’t think I should market it as equine therapy, but what about people referring to it as such anyway? should I worry about... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Fellowship Strategy
I am a man with many varied interests, and a large debt burden. What I want to be is a man with a very particular set of skills; skills I have acquired over a very long career. I'm interested in sleep medicine fellowship and addiction fellowship following a psychiatry residency which will give me the learning of psychotherapy of the east coast. I have two questions: 1) what do sleep medicine psychiatrists really do? I've done some reading and it seems like interpreting electronic... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Psychotherapy doesn ’t improve depression outcomes?
Hi all. I’m wondering what you guys make of the research i’ve linked below. To quote the medscape article: “Results of a cross-sectional, naturalistic, multicenter European study showed there were no significant differences in response rates between patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) who received combination treatment with psychotherapy and antidepressant medication in comparison with those who received antidepressant monotherapy” Medscape article: No Added Benefit of... Risk assessment billing code
I think there should be a cpt code for psychiatric risk assessment. This is a separate task we have to perform beyond psychiatric medication management, beyond psychotherapy. And it’s not compensated. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Benzo vs other options for anxiety
Question for the psychiatrists here from a pain physician. All the national guidelines I’ve read about anxiety management, state that virtually no one should be prescribed chronic daily benzodiazepines for anxiety, (particularly short acting agents such as Xanax), and definitely not tid or qid dosing. Some papers do mention a small supply for rescue benzo doses to be used 3-5 times a month max. Everything else should be used instead of benzos, so psychotherapy, multiple SSRI, buspirone...
