Trends and disparities in perinatal health outcomes among women from refugee backgrounds in Victoria, Australia: A population-based study
CONCLUSION: Refugee background was associated with unfavourable perinatal outcomes, highlighting the negative influence of refugee status on perinatal health. This evidences the need to address the unique healthcare requirements of this vulnerable population to enhance the well-being of mothers and newborns. Implementing targeted interventions and policies is crucial to meet the healthcare requirements of women of refugee backgrounds. Collaborative efforts between healthcare organisations, government agencies and non-governmental organisations are essential in establishing comprehensive support systems to assist refugee wo...

Postnatal depression in British mothers of African and Caribbean origin: a randomised controlled trial of learning through play plus culturally adapted cognitive behaviour therapy compared with psychoeducation
ConclusionsLTP+CaCBT intervention is culturally appropriate and acceptable and reduces postnatal depression in British mothers of African/Caribbean origin. A fully powered RCT is recommended to evaluate the clinical and cost-effectiveness of LTP+CaCBT, including the child’s outcomes compared with routine treatment as usual.Clinical trial registrationwww.ClinicalTrials.gov, identifier NCT04820920. Meta-analysis of association between caesarean section and postpartum depression risk
ConclusionOur findings suggest that PPD risk may rise in the presence of CS. In particular, the risk was increased by 20% in the EMCS group, and the risk of PPD within one to six months postpartum after CS increases by 6% compared to that at six months postpartum. In the future, more rational designs and in-depth studies are needed to obtain more accurate information.Systematic review registrationhttps://www.crd.york.ac.uk/PROSPERO/#recordDetails, identifier CRD42023389265. The bidirectional association between premenstrual disorders and perinatal depression: A nationwide register-based study from Sweden
by Qian Yang, Emma Br änn, Elizabeth R. Bertone- Johnson, Arvid Sjölander, Fang Fang, Anna Sara Oberg, Unnur A. Valdimarsdóttir, Donghao Lu BackgroundPremenstrual disorders (PMDs) and perinatal depression (PND) share symptomology and the timing of symptoms of both conditions coincide with natural hormonal fluctuations, which may indicate a shared etiology. Yet, there is a notable absence of prospective data on the potential bidirectional association between these conditions, which is crucial for guiding clinical management. Using the Swedish nationwide registers with prospectively collected data, we aimed to investigate...

Perioperative intravenous infusion of dexmedetomidine for alleviating postpartum depression after cesarean section: A meta-analysis and systematic review
Eur J Obstet Gynecol Reprod Biol. 2024 Mar 21;296:333-341. doi: 10.1016/j.ejogrb.2024.03.024. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe efficacy of perioperative dexmedetomidine (DEX) infusion as a precaution against postpartum depression (PPD) in women undergoing cesarean section has not been substantiated systematically. A literature search for RCTs on DEX against PPD was retrieved in the following databases from inception to January 3, 2024: PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, the Cochrane Library, CNKI, Wanfang, CBM, VIP, etc. A total of 13 RCTs with 1711 participants were included. Meta-analysis was performed by RevMan5.3 and Sta...

IJERPH, Vol. 21, Pages 404: Depression Treatment in Pregnancy: Is It Safe, or Is It Not?
Franca Cavaliere Prenatal depression carries substantial risks for maternal and fetal health and increases susceptibility to postpartum depression. Untreated depression in pregnancy is correlated with adverse outcomes such as an increased risk of suicidal ideation, miscarriage and neonatal growth problems. Notwithstanding concerns about the use of antidepressants, the available treatment options emphasize the importance of specialized medical supervision during gestation. The purpose of this paper is to conduct a brief literature review on the main antidepressant drugs and their effects on pregnancy, assessing their r...

Antenatal anxiety symptoms outperform antenatal depression symptoms and suicidal ideation as a risk factor for postpartum suicidal ideation
CONCLUSIONS: Antenatal anxiety symptoms, depression symptoms, and SI were positively associated with postpartum SI. When examined simultaneously, anxiety symptoms during the antenatal phase (but not depression symptoms or SI) predicted SI in the postpartum phase.PMID:38523456 | DOI:10.1080/10615806.2024.2333377 (Source: Anxiety, Stress, and Coping)
