What Causes Hyperphosphatemia?
Discussion Constipation is a common problem in general pediatrics and its causes are numerous. It can cause acute and recurrent abdominal pain and is a cause of abdominal distention. Patients who are young, whose presentations are other than routine or who had complications should be invested for underlying causes of their constipation. This patient had undergone some evaluations in the past for constipation but because of the presentation of sepsis a more rigorous evaluation was undertaken. The differential diagnoses of the following can be found here: constipation, acute abdominal pain, recurrent abdominal pain, and abdo...

Active Prep vs Clear Fluids Before Capsule Endoscopy Active Prep vs Clear Fluids Before Capsule Endoscopy
A clear-fluid diet is just as effective as polyethylene glycol (PEG) or sodium picosulfate plus magnesium (P/MC) as preparation for video capsule endoscopy, and the clear-fluids regimen is better tolerated, researchers say.Reuters Health Information (Source: Medscape Gastroenterology Headlines)

Rant: ultrasound visualization of pills in the stomach will never make sense
Konstantin Shevtsov/shutterstock.com 2 out of 5 stars Accuracy of Trans-Abdominal Ultrasound in a Simulated Massive Acute Overdose. Sullivan S et al.  Am J Emerg Med 2016 Apr 23 [Epub ahead of print] Abstract As soon as emergency portable bedside ultrasound became feasible approximately three decades ago, toxicologists wondered if it would be a useful modality for visualizing pills in the stomach of overdose patients. The answer, clearly, is no it would not. This misguided paper illustrates why. This randomized study had a study group (N=10) and a control group (N=10) ingest 50 enteric-coated placebo capsules plus 1 L fl...

MicroRNA Imaging in Combination with Diagnostic Ultrasound and Bubble Liposomes for MicroRNA Delivery
MicroRNA (miRNA) is expected to play an important role in the diagnosis and therapy of various diseases. In miRNA therapy, the development of delivery tools to the target site is considered to be essential. By using a delivery tool possessing imaging ability, miRNA colocalized with the carrier could be visualized after administration. We prepared polyethylene glycol (PEG)-modified liposomes containing echo-contrast gas, “Bubble liposomes” (BLs), and confirmed that BLs containing cationic lipid were capable of loading miRNA. Furthermore, we also achieved the imaging and delivery of systemically injected miRNA to...

Hypoxia-Responsive Copolymer for siRNA Delivery
A wide variety of nanomedicine has been designed for cancer therapy. Herein, we describe the synthesis and evaluation of a hypoxia-responsive copolymer for siRNA delivery (Perche et al., Angew Chem Int Ed Engl 53:3362–3366, 2014). The synthesis is achieved using established coupling chemistry and accessible purification procedures. A polyelectrolyte-lipid conjugate (polyethyleneimine 1.8 kDa-dioleyl-phosphatidylinositol, PEI-PE) and polyethylene glycol 2000 (PEG) were assembled via the hypoxia-sensitive azobenzene (Azo) unit to obtain the PEG-Azo-PEI-DOPE copolymer. This copolymer can condense siRNA and shows hypoxia...

Low-Cost Peptide Microarrays for Mapping Continuous Antibody Epitopes
With the increasing need for understanding antibody specificity in antibody and vaccine research, pepscan assays provide a rapid method for mapping and profiling antibody responses to continuous epitopes. We have developed a relatively low-cost method to generate peptide microarray slides for studying antibody binding. Using a setup of an IntavisAG MultiPep RS peptide synthesizer, a Digilab MicroGrid II 600 microarray printer robot, and an InnoScan 1100 AL scanner, the method allows the interrogation of up to 1536 overlapping, alanine-scanning, and mutant peptides derived from the target antigens. Each peptide is tagged wi...

Management of body packers
This article from Hillingdon Hospital in London — located a mere 4 miles from Heathrow airport — was intended to evaluate the facility’s existing protocol for managing body packers. Although some details of their protocol are not justified or even well-described, in general they align with the trend towards conservative treatment of asymptomatic patients, with observation bowel cleansing agents — they used Picolax (sodium picosulfate with magnesium citrate) or Klean-Prep (polyethylene glycol.) Surgery was reserved for patients showing signs of toxicity from cocaine or heroin, or gastrointestinal obstruction, bu...

Malic acid encourages sweet cherry cracking
(American Society for Horticultural Science) Water uptake and fruit cracking in sweet cherries was observed following incubation in polyethylene glycol 6000, real sweet cherry juice extracted from the same batch of fruit, or in artificial juice. A dramatic increase in cracking was observed when sweet cherry fruit was in direct contact with the expressed juice of sweet cherries. The research clearly identified malic acid as the major crack-promoting component in sweet cherry juice. (Source: EurekAlert! - Biology)

Roche enters into exclusive license agreement with Galenica for the commercialisation of Mircera in the United States
Roche announced today that it has entered into an exclusive licence agreement with Galenica for the commercialisation of Roche's drug Mircera (methoxy polyethylene glycol-epoetin beta) in the US and Puerto Rico. Mircera is a prescription medicine used to treat symptomatic anaemia associated with chronic kidney disease (CKD) in adult patients and represents an ideal complement to the existing product portfolio of Galenica for patients with CKD and iron deficiency. Understanding Miralax: The parents’ guide on how to approach constipation
Increase water intake and exercise, adopt and maintain a fiber-rich diet and avoid foods that bind you. These are common ways to find relief from constipation. But sometimes a child needs more to keep the digestive “engines,” (or bowels) moving. To ease the discomfort of chronic childhood constipation, pediatricians often prescribe an over-the-counter laxative called Miralax, the brand name for the generic drug polyethylene glycol 3350. The odorless, tasteless powder is typically mixed with 8 ounces of water or other liquid-of-choice and prescribed to children for use once or twice daily. Common side effects include ...

Injectable Nanoparticles Could Protect Injuries from Oxidative Stress
Scientists at Rice University, Baylor College of Medicine and the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) Medical School designed methods to validate their 2012 discovery that combined polyethylene glycol-hydrophilic carbon clusters - known as PEG-HCCs - could quickly stem the process of overoxidation that can cause damage in the minutes and hours after an injury.
