Inferior long-term outcomes after surgery for lumbar disc herniation in patients with prior lumbar spine surgery
ConclusionsPatients with previous lumbar surgery had inferior long-term outcomes compared to patients without prior surgery. However, the vast majority of these patients improved quickly after the index surgery. Furthermore, the difference in the patients ’ reported outcomes was small at the long-term follow-up, and they reported high satisfaction with the results of the study surgery. Hence, surgery for these patients should be considered if surgical indications are met, but special care needs must be accounted for when deliberating upon their ind ications for surgery. Income Trajectories and Precarity in Later life
AbstractThis paper captures trajectories of income in later-life and considers how membership of particular income trajectories is patterned by social class, sex and precarity in housing, pensions relationships, care and retirement. Using the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (2002-19) for over-50s, latent class analysis identifies 10 income trajectory clusters and on the basis of comparable income levels from around statutory retirement age (65), we further condense these clusters to four income trajectory groups of ‘Luxury’ (at or above £500 per week in retirement; 14%), Comfortable (£300-£500 per week in retir...

Employment benefits across U.S. allopathic medical schools: National norms and relationships with institutional wealth
This study summarizes employment benefits from across 155  U.S. allopathic medical schools, investigates differences in employment benefits according to institutional characteristics, and explores possible connections between employment benefits and institutional wealth. Employment benefits data were extracted from institutions’ websites across four ca tegories: time-off, time-away, retirement contributions, and Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs)/family benefits. This dataset was mixed with other publicly available datasets sourced through the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), the American Council on Ed...

Assessment of anxiety and depression and selected psychosocial variables in cancer patients
CONCLUSIONS: Tools for screening the risk of depression and anxiety disorders should be used routinely during regular medical consultations in a patient with cancer. This will allow for early detection of symptoms and initiation of therapeutic measures.PMID:38170649 | DOI:10.12740/PP/151067 (Source: Psychiatria Polska)

Association between doxycycline use and long-term functioning in patients with schizophrenia
CONCLUSIONS: In this observational study, doxycycline exposure is associated with a reduced incidence of disability pension. These data support further studies on the potential long term neuroprotective effects of doxycycline and level of functioning in schizophrenia patients.PMID:38169245 | DOI:10.1016/j.bbi.2023.12.036 (Source: Brain, Behavior, and Immunity)

Protocol for a systematic review to understand the long-term mental-health effects of influenza pandemics in the pre-COVID-19 era
CONCLUSIONS: Pandemics likely produce long-term mental-health impacts with relevance for social, health and economic planning. The systematic review based on this protocol will complement other evidence on pandemic impacts and help policymakers incorporate relevant interventions.PMID:38153124 | DOI:10.1177/14034948231217362 (Source: Scandinavian Journal of Public Health)
