The epidemiological evidence is reviewed, the diagnostic criteria most frequently used in clinical practice are examined, and a series of therapeutic recommendations for the correct treatment of this pathology is presented. Sleep disorders are very prevalent in the general population (one-third experiences difficulty with sleep initiation/maintenance at least once a week, and about 6-15% mee...

Occupation-specific risk estimates for suicide and non-fatal self-harm from a Swedish cohort of male construction workers followed 1987-2018
Conclusions Specific occupations within the construction sector were associated with excess risk for suicidal behaviour. Future studies should identify underlying risk factors to inform tailored interventions. (Source: Occupational and Environmental Medicine)

Pathways to retirement in West Germany: Does divorce matter?
Adv Life Course Res. 2024 Feb 16;60:100595. doi: 10.1016/j.alcr.2024.100595. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe aim of this paper is to explore how divorce is linked to pathways to retirement in West Germany and to understand whether and how patterns are gendered. Using German pension insurance data, I employ sequence and cluster analysis to map and group pathways to retirement of women and men who retired in 2018. Pathways to retirement are defined based on monthly pension insurance histories from age 50 to 65. I find nine distinct pathways to retirement, ranging from unemployment to stable low to high income pathways and ...

Modifiable prognostic factors of high societal costs among people on sick leave due to musculoskeletal disorders: findings from an occupational cohort study
Conclusion Factors identified in this study are potential target areas for interventions which could reduce high societal costs among people on sick leave due to musculoskeletal disorders. However, future research aimed at replicating these findings is warranted. Trial registration number NCT04196634, 12 December 2019. (Source: BMJ Open)

Post-injury long-term sickness absence and risk of disability pension: the role of socioeconomic status
In recent decades, improvements in injury prevention and trauma care have contributed to a global reduction in injury mortality rates [1]. As the likelihood of surviving serious injury has increased, attention has shifted towards exploring the burden of non-fatal injury. This research effort has established that non-fatal injuries can have adverse effects on health-related quality of life and other functional outcomes [2 –6], while also documenting substantial economic costs to society [7–8]. Of particular concern are long-term or lifelong consequences of injury, including the inability to return to work and subsequent...

A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of the Socioeconomic, Lifestyle, and Environmental Factors Associated with Healthy Ageing in Low and Lower-Middle-Income Countries
AbstractPopulation ageing is a growing social and health issue in low and lower-middle-income countries (LLMIC). It will have an impact on rising healthcare costs, unaffordable pension liabilities, and changing healthcare demands. The health systems of many LLMICs are unprepared to meet these challenges and highlighting the modifiable factors that may help decrease these pressures is important. This review assessed the prevalence of healthy ageing and the modifiable factors that may promote/inhibit healthy ageing among older people in LLMIC. A systematic search of all articles published from 2000 to June 2022 was conducted...

Investigating the Critical Period for Alcohol or Other Drug-Related Presentations Following Access to Residential Substance Use Treatment: a Data Linkage Study
AbstractIndividuals who access residential treatment for substance use disorders are at a greater risk of negative health and substance-use outcomes upon exiting treatment. Using linked data, we aimed to identify predictive factors and the critical period for alcohol or other drug (AOD)-related events following discharge. Participants include 1056 individuals admitted to three residential treatment centres in Queensland, Australia from January 1 2014 to December 31 2016. We linked participants ’ treatment data with administrative data from hospitals, emergency departments, AOD services, mental health services and the dea...
