Reserve after HPSP Active Duty Commitment (Air Force)
OK I know what some of you are thinking. Dr. DLoNB, why in the world would you willingly stay in the military after being handed the golden key to your HPSP active duty chastity belt? The allure of cheap health insurance, being able to transfer my GI bill, and salving my HPSP time towards a retirement pension is enticing me. From what I can tell, it's just a weekend per month and maybe 2 weeks a year of active duty time. The retirement pay is not insignificant and could be a huge part of... Best place to practice interventional pain
I'm still in residency but very concerned about the future of our great nation. It seems that my most productive years will be spent working hard (something I want to do) and paying high taxes to fund medicare/social security/pensions (several things I DON'T want to do) and on top of it being paid very little to do so... To top it all off the dollar is dying and the country is propped up on debt and I don't have a good feeling about the economic future. Does anyone have any leads... Thought about pension/retirement benefits?
I'm graduating next year and is deciding between academic environment vs. large practice such as Kaiser. For KPNC the pay is north 450K, eligible for pension after 10-15 years services. For me this seems like a really good deal given the stable income stream on retirement. What do you think about this pension? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

FM locums docs advice?
Any FM locums docs out there willing to DM me or share their experiences here? I’m about to retire from AF next year. Kids are out of the house, and wife (and cat) supportive of following me around. Looking to work 6-9 mons/year supplemented by military pension. Will be working over the next year on seeing lots of primary care pts since at my current clinic I only see young healthy people (Flight Surgeon). I’ve been talking with CompHealth, but they don’t talk much about compensation and... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Breakeven Point for Staying in for Military Pension vs. Private Practice When You Have Prior Service
Has anyone done a detailed analysis on lifetime earnings on active duty, vs. reserves and civilian practice, vs. pure civilian practice? I’ve done some rough math but would like to know how others have approached this. I have 5 years AD from my previous career, 2 reserve, a 5 year residency ahead of me and a 4 year payback. I think it makes sense to stay until 20, based on the lifetime value of a military pension (estimating for me $2.5-3 mil) but I’m also in a relatively high paying... Medical School is such a scam
Friend just offered 200k a year to work as a nurse in San Francisco. No nights or weekends, 5 weeks paid vacation a year, pension, 401k with match, great benefits. Easy job, low patient numbers. Education is such a scam. I can't this good a gig, anywhere. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Kaiser SCPMG total compensation
I'm having trouble comparing apples to apples total compensation value of a Kaiser Southern California full-time partnership track to a 1099 no-benefits job. In other words, has anyone done basic math of how much the benefits that Kaiser offers are actually worth? I'd have to take a $100k pay cut, but my gut instinct tells me the pension, job security and insurance are worth it long term. But I would like to see if they math supports it. Kaiser Residency Pension?
Hey everyone. Not sure if this is the right thread for this but hopefully it's appropriate. I was looking over the SoCal Kaiser Residency Salary & Benefits page (link below) and I noticed that there was a pension included that seems to kick in after 1 year of employment with 1000 hours. Theres also a link to a pamphlet which mentions that "retirement income based on your compensation and years of service when you retire" and that you are fully vested in the plan after 5 years. Salary &... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Financial planning for partnership
I just received an unsolicited job offer to become a full equity owner in a practice after 2 years (with no buy in!) I will also have a pension, paid leave, a business account and free life insurance. Sounds like I’ll be set for life. I can’t believe this opportunity fell into my lap. It’s a small group called USACS. I can’t wait to become a partner in a practice. Any advice on how to deal with this windfall TYVM (Source: Student Doctor Network)

VA question
Anyone who has worked or is currently working at a VA care to discuss salary, taxes, take home pay etc? I'm currently active duty, have a little over a year left, and am strongly considering working for the VA after active duty time and buying back my 8 years toward VA pension. I found some information online but wondering a little more specifics. I see the pay tiers and everything but it gives such a wide range sometimes. (Source: Student Doctor Network)
