Late Night Dinner at Five & Ten in Athens, Georgia
At first, I was really, really upset that my flight to Atlanta was delayed, making us miss our 8:30 dinner reservation at Five & Ten in Athens, Georgia. This was no ordinary dinner reservation. My brother Joe and wife Rachel had arranged a special tasting meal for us with Five & Ten’s executive chef, Jason Zygmont, who they originally met when Joe stopped into the kitchen one day last year unannounced to borrow preserving salt for some charcuterie he was making. Joe returned a few weeks later to give Jason some of the duck proscuitto he had cured, expecting to quickly drop it off with the busy chef...

Avian botulism, or feeding the ducks
On a recent visit to Hillsborough Park to feed the geese, ducks and coots, we spotted some peas on the ground by the side of the lake.   We were surprised that birds ate such things, but the Canal and River Trust are recommending that people do indeed feed water birds frozen peas, or lettuce, or grain.  This story was picked up extensively in the UK media yesterday and today. But not bread.  The video in this piece from the Daily Telegraph has figures for the amount of bread that is fed to water birds.   A lot of it is not eaten by the birds, but ends up as a culture medium for microorganisms, ...

Unity Farm Journal - Third Week of January 2015
The third week of January is generally the coldest, most bitter time in the New England winter season.  Temperatures dip to the single digits, snow/ice/winter mix cover the barnyard, and shoveling manure requires an ice chipper.   Eggs laid overnight in the chicken or duck pen crack when they freeze solid.   Every creature gets extra food to keep their internal furnaces stoked. The ground is frozen and all the outbuildings are below freezing inside.  Even the plants in the hoop house are need to be protected by row cover blankets.   Nothing will germinate at below freezing temperatures.Much of the w...

Unity Farm Journal - Christmas at the Farm
It’s Christmas Day on Unity Farm and the every creature has had extra attention, special meals, and new toys. What better gift for our livestock guardian dogs (Great Pyrenees) than soft fluffy beds in the barn loft?    As the pictures below illustrate, this was an ideal gift - the most fun they have had all year tearing each bed into a 1000 pieces.     It seems strange, but we made them deliriously happy with their gifts. The ducks, chickens, and guinea fowl got fresh spinach greens from the hoop house, peas, mealworms, and oats.    Below you’ll see them grazing in poultry heaven. The alpaca ...

Everyday Life: July 2014
We went down to Dunfermline to visit the in-laws and I spent the whole weekend sneezing and crying. Good ol’ Fife pollen. We got the royal tour of the allotment… It’s unrecognisable from the weedy wasteland we inherited back in 2011. It’s now crammed with tomatoes, strawberries, raspberries, gooseberries, blueberries, leeks, onions, carrots, pumpkins, broad beans, peas, rhubarb, courgettes and even wee apple trees. David and Mary have put so much hard work into it. Meanwhile back in Inverness there’s only one plant in our little rental back yard, but it’s a goodun. It heaved w...

Helen Friday…
The ubiquitous peas and carrots once again made an impromptu appearance today. Hiding under all that meatloaf is creamed potatoes. Mom always puts butter and lemon juice on my broccoli and I make a point of telling her I appreciate that extra gracious mile she gives me. I’ve got two more plates of food sitting in my parent’s fridge.  I am getting them tomorrow.  I could eat them tonight and that’s why they are still sitting in my parent’s fridge. I wouldn’t be able to resist the temptation. (Source: The 4th Avenue Blues)

Unity Farm Journal - 4th week of July 2014
Just as running a winery isn’t all romance, art, and elegance, running a farm is not all romping with your animals, a joyful harvest, and making a profit from the fruits of your labor.Farming is hard work year round, during the hot humid days of summer, the wet days of Spring/Fall and the chill of winter.  There’s always maintenance and always unexpected tasks. Some of my farm related posts gloss over the details of day to day operations.  This week, I’ll give you a taste of the kinds of things that require attention. Our 1.5 miles of trails, our mushroom operations, and manure management all depend on the Te...

Life in Britain on the Eve of the First World War
Marian L. Tupy The Telegraph has an interesting series of short articles about life in Britain at the start of WWI. While all of the articles are worth reading, here are the best parts for those who like to compare standard of living then and now. Work and leisure Most Edwardians worked in dark, noisy factories, cut hay in fields, toiled down dirty and dangerous mines; had bones bent by rickets and lungs racked by tuberculosis. Life expectancy then was 49 years for a man and 53 years for a woman, compared with 79 and 82 years today. They lived in back to back tenements or jerry-built terraces, wore cloth caps or bonnets (...

Unity Farm Journal - 4th week of June 2014
Last weekend, we had two days of clear, warm weather, perfect for harvesting vegetables, inoculating mushrooms, and caring for bees.We received 40 pounds of mushroom spawn from our supplier, Field and Forest, and we created two new mushroom areas - 4 raised beds of compost with Agaricus (almond mushroom) and 12 new stacks of logs with Oysters.    The Golden Oysters are beginning to fruit in the warm humidity of summer afternoons.Eating on the farm can be as simple as taking a basket to the hoop house and gathering a potpourri of delectable vegetables.    Sunday’s brunch was a bowl of fresh strawberrie...

Can a Tree Experience Hurt?: If It Can, Do Ethics and Law Apply?
I was visiting a well known botanic garden in Southern California today, taking pictures of all the beautiful flowers when I saw this tree shown above in the pictures I took.  Honestly, what I saw, a tree apparently being pulled by straps out of its normal posture, pained me as I projected myself as if I were that tree.  Of course, I am not that tree but then this got me thinking about the bioethics of what had been done to the tree.  (First of all, I want to admit that I have no idea how long the straps were in place or for what future duration and what the gardeners were intending to accomplish with the st...

Unity Farm Journal - First Week of June 2014
As Spring begins to transform into Summer, everything on the farm is a sea of green. As Paul Simon wrote in 1973 KodachromeThey give us those nice bright colorsThey give us the greens of summersMakes you think all the world'sa sunny dayAll of the guinea fowl are in crazed Summer mating mode, with males chasing females all over the property and communal nests appearing in the forest, with clusters of 30-40 eggs.   On some nights a “designated layer” sits on the nest and sometimes does not survive the prowling foxes, coyotes and fisher cats.    We lost one guinea this week, so we’re down to 27.I’v...
