In the Land of Milk and Honey…
Mom called me very bright and early this Saturday morning which was quite extraordinary. She usually doesn’t stir until around lunch or later unless we are going to a movie. “Your cokes, cigarettes, and Helen’s leftovers are on the back porch,” she told me with a business like acumen. Ah, the secretary… Excitedly, I put on some pants and a warm jacket and headed for my parent’s house five minutes away. It was almost 8 am. A warm meatloaf sandwich would certainly hit the spot for breakfast. Dad was gathering all his garden hoses up for the winter when I pulled into my parent’s back driveway. “You need to...

Author’s Debut is a Tough, Lyrical Addiction Memoir
"If we don't change direction soon, we'll end up where we're going." –Prof. Irwin CoreyI’ve never made a secret of the fact that I don’t really like addiction memoirs—with notable literary exceptions, from Thomas de Quincey to William S. Burroughs, including worthy modern efforts from James Brown, Jerry Stahl, Sacha Z. Scoblic, and others. Writing well about addiction is a rare gift, and newcomer Jessica Hendry Nelson, in If Only You People Could Follow Directions: A Memoir, comes at the problem elliptically, in some cases deliberately pruned of strong emotion. This works in her favor, as she eschews over-the-...

Come In From the Cold…
Precious and poor little Maggie was freezing this morning. The temperature in my house was 65 degrees and Maggie couldn’t snuggle up tighter to me this morning than she already was. Two peas in a pod as the old saying goes. I set the heat to 74 and it felt like a heat wave with heat blasting out of my floor vents. I was toasty warm as I had fallen asleep with my heavy clothes on.  Soon, Charlie arrived around 10 a.m. with breakfast and gave me a reason to get out of bed. We had two sausage biscuits and McDonald’s hash browns. Maggie and I got one each. Maggie doesn’t always get her own breakfast so she was an e...

Free Range Chicken…
My mother’s doctor set her loose upon this little burg today – destined to do all the things she hasn't been able to do for months. A ripple could be felt reverberating throughout the space/time continuum this afternoon. “The doctor said I can go back to doing everything I was doing before the surgery,” she excitably told me over the phone. Mom’s buying me clothes in Wal-Mart at the moment. She said I was looking sort of shabby.  Fortunately, my mother has a good eye and a panache for men’s fashion. Helen’s lunch was kind of mediocre – another day of baked ham and you know how I feel about that. Asto...

alimentary, my dear Watson
When Cal was little I freely admit that we rarely cooked and ordered out a lot due to a confluence of factors: residency, tiny apartment kitchen, ridiculous availability of cheap multi-ethnic restaurant delivery options being the primary ones. When Mack was a toddler I cooked a little bit more, but again, freely admit that I relied very heavily on the Trader Joe's ready-made-meal aisle for, well, 75% of our dinners, though supplemented with fresh fruit and vegetables to round out the microwaved, peel-back-the-plastic-wrap experience. Now, with Nina eating table food and me being somewhat more firmly entrenched in the trappi...

The Great Vacuum Debacle…
Helen has been continuously complaining to mom that their vacuum is too heavy and it hurts her legs and back when she uses it.  Well, mom heard Helen’s pleas of help and gave Helen a few hundred dollars to go get a lighter and newer vacuum. Helen went to Wal-Mart and fulfilled her wishes this morning.  Mom said she was a very happy housecleaner. “Don’t you dare tell your father I did that!” mom exclaimed to me over the phone. I live under a don’t ask and don’t tell bureaucracy. Right now, Helen is at the beauty salon with mom as mom gets her hair poofed up in Marge Simpson fashion. Mom still can’t ...

Probiotics
My child has lots of food allergies, is it safe to give them probiotics? Are probiotics safe for kids with food allergies? Absolutely! In fact, I especially recommend probiotics for children with allergies because some studies have shown that probiotics can lessen the immune reaction against proteins in foods. While there’s no guarantee that probiotics will help (not all studies have demonstrated positive results), no serious adverse effects have been reported. Probiotics are very safe. But, as you are probably learning from dealing with allergies to milk, eggs, nuts, and shellfish, it’s important to at least check...

Q/A – Can you do a candida yeast cleanse, a bowel cleanse, and an anti fungal treatment at the same time?
You guys might also have this question so I’m posting it here with a good answer too. It comes from ‘erica p’ who asks: I want to do a detox of my body, and I need some advice….Also, can you take vitamins and birth control along with the treatments? To the first two individuals, i can not respond to your answers because i am not a level two. But the answers you provided me don’t help me… Answer: The best detox answer I ever read went something like this. “Okay so get yourself a liver…. got one? Now just stand there and let the liver do the work”.Colon cleansing has a...

Hungry Zombies Rejoice! Scientists Successfully Grow Human Brain Tissue
Cross-section cererbral Organoid The latest breakthrough in regenerative medicine comes from the Institute of Molecular Biotechnology (IMBA) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (OeAW), where researchers have successfully grown human brain tissue. Using induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells derived from skin, the researchers utilized a method involving a synthetic gel scaffold, a bath of special cell nutrients, a spinning bioreactor, and plenty of oxygen to produce small “cerebral organoids” that contained discrete and identifiable brain regions that even interacted with each other. The scientists were able to ...

Answering the Question ‘I need an effective, good, yet cheap detox kit to cleanse my body?’
Here a good question I found in the comments section of a previous post. ‘Matt’s lady’ asks us the question: I’m trying to get into healthier habits, like eating healthier, exercising more, etc. I hear that in the same sense that your car needs an oil change every few thousand miles, your body needs detoxed 2-4 times a year. I was wondering if anyone could help me with some websites or something, because I don’t have a TON of money to spare, but I can spend a bit. Plus my dad has a failing liver, and I’d like to get something to help with that, too. Answer: Colon cleansing or cleansing ...

In the Good Hands of Helen…
Helen called me last hour and told me she had cooked a big lunch for my parents. Especially for my mother. I hurried over to my parent’s house to eat a hearty meal. Helen said my mother ate two platefuls. I went back for seconds myself as well. It was just too delicious to miss. I especially enjoyed the summer squash with Vidalia onions. We also had a baked pork chop, black eyed peas, cole slaw, creamed potatoes, and cornbread. (Source: The 4th Avenue Blues)
