New, improved Barbie®
Our grandkids were with us this week for four days--a true delight. But also stressful...that's actually putting it mildly. In the spirit of full disclosure, I experienced moments of intense anger during their visit. NOT at them or because of them but at Tom, my beloved husband (although that's not how I'd have described him during those 4 days). In the not-as-tunnel-visioned light of hindsight, I realize that my intense need to follow rules and "do things right" was at play BIG TIME! These kids are accustomed to routine: 3 regular meals plus two snacks each day, bedtime between 6:45-7:00PM (for the 5-year-old, Trini...

Helen Does it Again…
Wonderful meal this afternoon prepared by our esteemed Helen. I had told dad to get the thick cut pork chops and he did. Helen fried pork chops, streamed yellow saffron rice, chowder peas, fried okra and cornbread. There was also a green salad with ranch dressing, and Helen delivered my meal by pulling in front of my house and blowing her horn. “I’m going to see your momma now,” Helen said through her open window. Helen had a plate of food for my mother as well to eat if she felt like it. (Source: The 4th Avenue Blues)

10 Ways to Reduce Stress at Work That Could Save Your Life
Let’s face it.  Many of us have felt the miserable feeling that stress and tension related to our jobs can cause on a daily basis.  Aside from feeling bad from a mental perspective there are serious health issues that can develop if you don’t do something and make some changes to reduce your stress levels.Stress and work are like two peas in a pod.  They go together well, and because of this, many people dread waking up every morning.  Stress is not something to take lightly.  You could say that it’s a fact of life, but having too much stress could lead to some major health problems down the line.Rather than wak...

Passing through
There was going to be more blogging.  There really was. But I arrived home yesterday after a 24 hours that had included (not in order): 3 flights, 1 arrive-at-10.30-leave-at-8 hotel stay, an intense (and rewarding) morning’s work, saying goodbye to friends until the autumn, four sets of security checking, packing, replacing a broken suitcase, and the worst episode of food poisoning I have suffered since the Stratford Incident of (I think) 1987. I will spare you the details, but I will tell you that the vomiting was so violent that I ended up picking bits of regurgitated food out of my hair from the splashback…...

Building Unity Farm - Creating a Brand
As we move from the farm building stage to the farm operations stage, Kathy and I are turning our attention to the basics of running our farming business.   We've filed articles of incorporation (Unity Farm LLC), created a formal land management plan for review by the town of Sherborn, built basic processes for recording income/expenses, documented options for selling our products and formulated a multi-year strategic plan leading to full recognition as an agricultural enterprise.Creating a brand is an important step for us as we begin to build awareness of our apples, honey, mushrooms, alpaca fiber, handmade soa...

Helen Outdid Herself
I am just too darn lazy to put up a picture of our Helen Friday meal today (to be honest. I was hungry and ate it before I could take a photo). We had fried chicken, macaroni and cheese, chowder peas, fried okra, corn bread, and green beans. Everything was cooked to perfection and I got my macaroni and cheese!  Dad surprised me on that one. Helen continues to refine her cornbread recipe and it gets better and better. Now, if we could just get the crunchy coating on the outside things would be perfect. (Source: The 4th Avenue Blues)

Jump on the Gravy Train
It was about 4pm when my mother brought my most delicious Helen meal.  I’ve told her a hundred times I would come get it if she would call when it is ready. Helen fixes my meal for mom before she leaves. Mom insists on bringing it every Friday. Today, Helen cooked cubed-steak and gravy, peas and carrots, steamed broccoli, yellow saffron rice, and Helen’s biscuits. We also had some fruit salad.  You know my father. He has to have a salad with every major meal except breakfast. I was just over at my parent’s house getting some lemonades and there is a ton of food leftover on the stove. It looks like it is g...

Senators Levin and McCain: Two Peas All Up in our iPods
Daniel J. Ikenson Earlier this year, Senator Carl Levin (D-MI) announced that he will be retiring after many, many, many decades of lawmaking when his term expires in January 2015. But he doesn’t intend to make for the exits without sealing his legacy of disdain for America’s wealth creators. After holding hearings last September to shed light on the “loopholes and gimmicks” employed by U.S. multinational companies to avoid paying their “fair share” of taxes, Levin resumed his inquisition today by holding a hearing intended to publically shame one of America’s most successful and most bountiful companies: Ap...

Like a Bat Out of Hell
That's how I left volunteering. I was out of there and headed to my parent's house for my sodas at noon. If you can believe it, I forgot to get them this morning. I slept until seven today. No doubt I am feeling the effects of my new Medications. Breakfast was a hastily made peanut butter and jelly sandwich which was eaten as I walked out the door. Maggie had to make do with last night's kibble put out by my father yesterday evening.Dad was busy working in his yard when I arrived. Beautiful flowers were to be seen. He was potting a fern when I drove by in their driveway."You look good," my father told me very warmly as I w...

I had a post all worked out about how I'd lost all joy in my job. . .
And then it got cold.Let's review the bidding: Yesterday, the high was 85*F. That's somewhere north of 29 degrees for you guys who are using a sane and sensible temperature scale.Last night, the low was 50*F. Today, the *high* was 47*F.Tonight, it's supposed to get down close to freezing. I hope the tomato plants and basil live.In short, go home, Texas weather. You're drunk.I refuse to talk about nursing right now, because Manglement has indeed sucked all the joy out of my job recently. Instead of being sad that a friend of mine is leaving for a new job, I'm burning with envy.So instead, let's talk about food. I have a cra...

Recipe of the Week: Greek Quinoa Salad
What's better than a fresh, flavorful salad in the Spring? A super-refreshing one that isn't the same ole' bowl of lettuce. This quinoa salad that I adapted from the Two Peas and Their Pod is bursting with bright, Greek-style flavors from all the fresh produce and creamy feta cheese. (And you guys know how good the Mediterranean Diet is for you, right?) Enjoy as a side with chicken or fish or enjoy a big bowl all on its own for a light, yet hearty lunch. How Was My Week? It Had Its Ups and Downs.
By Jan Chait Maybe we should all pack day bags with our diabetes essentials in them when we go out to events. Say to watch a parade, or a ballgame, engage in a day of shopping…or cheer on somebody running a marathon. What would you — and I — need if, say, a bomb went off and we unexpectedly ended up in a hospital or couldn't get home or our hotel was off limits (or partially gone)? It's something to think about. Along with "what's this world coming to, anyway?" My weekend was busy. We had a gardening resource fair at the synagogue and I took a portable garden that was two feet by four feet and set it on...

Always a Kid at Heart…
Well, I turned 41 years old today.  I personally thought I would never make it this far. Life seems to be getting better and better as I work with my therapist and we work on coping strategies to combat social anxiety and mental illness.  I owe her a big hug someday. Hark! There Goes the Helen -- Purveyor of Fine Foods… Helen was sitting out on my parent’s back porch this afternoon. She loves to do that when the weather is warm.  I had just drove over to my parent's house on a mission.  I was getting my six sodas for the day. It is so good to have her back. I’ve missed her. “You will never gue...

Glorious
I was working in Cardiff last week. The driver who took me from the office to the airport, on a beautifully sunshiny day, asked, ‘isn’t it glorious?’ ‘Glorious’, as you may know if you come here often, was my Grandma Boyd’s word. It was most often applied to flowers – especially snowdrops, bluebells and sweet peas – but could also be used for grandchildren, weather, the sight of the sea. So when I agreed with the taxi driver that it was, indeed, glorious – and it was- I was also tipping a wink to my Grandma; our own private joke. I could feel her smile. It was as though...
