Disorders of sex development and female reproductive capacity: A literature review
Syst Biol Reprod Med. 2021 Jul 1:1-14. doi: 10.1080/19396368.2021.1937376. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDisorders of sex development (DSD) are a wide-ranging group of complex conditions that influence chromosomal, gonadal, and phenotypic sex. The prevalence of DSD is very low, but affected patients deserve individualized management to improve psychological, sexual, and reproductive outcomes. This review aims to clarify the fertility potential of DSD patients who can be reared as females and their chance of becoming pregnant, especially using assisted reproductive techniques (ART). Due to the effects of DSD on internal and...

Mayer-Rokitansky-K üster-Hauser syndrome (müllerian agenesis): a wider window into ethnic phenotypic diversity. Where to from here?
Mayer-Rokitansky-K üster-Hauser (MRKH) syndrome, also known by its anatomic descriptor, müllerian agenesis, is a diagnosis made typically in early adolescence due to eugonadotropic primary amenorrhea. MRKH syndrome presents at least two other challenges to patients and reproductive specialists during the course of r eproductive life. At coitarche, most experience difficulty in achieving satisfying vaginal intercourse due to a short or absent vagina and require mechanical dilation or surgical augmentation. Implications of Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome in a Patient With Mayer-Rokitansky-K üster-Hauser Syndrome
Ehlers-Danlos syndromes (EDS) are a heterogenous group of connective tissue disorders characterized by defective collagen production. Patients with EDS have lax and fragile connective tissue in their joints, skin, blood vessels, and hollow organs. This can lead to, among other complications, joint hypermobility, aneurysms, organ prolapse, and musculoskeletal chronic pain. Given that patients with vaginal agenesis, which occurs with Mayer-Rokitansky-K üster-Hauser (MRKH) syndrome, often require vaginal dilation as part of their treatment, tissue elasticity and fragility are important considerations. Mayer-Rokitansky-K üster-Hauser syndrome with 22q11.21 microduplication: a case report
ConclusionsThe altered gene expression together with other genetic, nongenetic, epigenetic or environmental factors can cause the extremely variable phenotype in patients carrying such duplication. Therefore, we can consider MRKH syndrome to be one of the clinical features of DGS/VCFS syndrome. (Source: Journal of Medical Case Reports)
