Occurrence, persistence, and ecological risk of bisphenol A in surface water receiving raw leachate from a municipal solid waste open dump in Kerawalapitiya, Sri Lanka
AbstractBisphenol A (BPA) is an anthropogenic chemical compound utilized to manufacture a wide range of consumer products, such as polycarbonate, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), food packages, and thermal papers. Because of its extensive worldwide use, BPA is pervasive in the environment, negatively affecting aquatic life. Therefore, we studied the occurrence, persistence, and ecological risk of BPA in surface water receiving raw leachate from a municipal solid waste (MSW) open dump in Kerawalapitiya, Sri Lanka. Our findings corroborate that the BPA average concentrations in the canal network were 0.4 –42.6 µg/L during the w...

Evaluation of the Performance of a 3D-Printed Smartphone-Based Retinal Imaging Device as a Screening Tool for Retinal Pathology in Mozambique
Am J Trop Med Hyg. 2023 Oct 9;109(5):1192-1198. doi: 10.4269/ajtmh.23-0378. Print 2023 Nov 1.ABSTRACTLow-income countries carry approximately 90% of the global burden of visual impairment, and up to 80% of this could be prevented or cured. However, there are only a few studies on the prevalence of retinal disease in these countries. Easier access to retinal information would allow differential diagnosis and promote strategies to improve eye health, which are currently scarce. This pilot study aims to evaluate the functionality and usability of a tele-retinography system for the detection of retinal pathology, based on a lo...

Family planning decision-making among young males in Southern Africa
Afr J Reprod Health. 2023 Oct 31;27(10):16-35. doi: 10.29063/ajrh2023/v27i10.2.ABSTRACTMale partners play a crucial role in reproductive health matters and seem to be identified as the main contributors responsible for the large proportion of poor reproductive health suffered by their female partners. Limited evidence exists, however, on effective strategies to increase male involvement in family planning. Therefore, this study aims to examine the prevalence and factors associated with male involvement in family planning decisions. Using recent data from Demographic and Health Surveys of seven countries in Southern Africa ...
