Sudden death after a bite by a lowland swamp viper (Proatheris superciliaris) in Malawi: Dying of fright?
Toxicon. 2023 Oct 12:107324. doi: 10.1016/j.toxicon.2023.107324. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTProatheris superciliaris, the lowland swamp viper, has a limited distribution along lakeshores and rivers in Malawi, Southern Tanzania, and central Mozambique. Its venom is known to be procoagulant. Only five P. superciliaris bites have been reported, all inflicted by captive snakes, and none was fatal. Here we present a case of sudden death following a bite by Proatheris superciliaris in rural Malawi that cannot be attributed to envenoming. A healthy 32-year-old woman was planting rice in a flooded rice paddy field when she sudd...

Efficacy and safety of pyronaridine-artesunate (PYRAMAX) for the treatment of < em > P. falciparum < /em > uncomplicated malaria in African pregnant women (PYRAPREG): study protocol for a phase 3, non-inferiority, randomised open-label clinical trial
BMJ Open. 2023 Oct 9;13(10):e065295. doi: 10.1136/bmjopen-2022-065295.ABSTRACTINTRODUCTION: Malaria infection during pregnancy increases the risk of low birth weight and infant mortality and should be prevented and treated. Artemisinin-based combination treatments are generally well tolerated, safe and effective; the most used being artemether-lumefantrine (AL) and dihydroartemisinin-piperaquine (DP). Pyronaridine-artesunate (PA) is a new artemisinin-based combination. The main objective of this study is to determine the efficacy and safety of PA versus AL or DP when administered to pregnant women with confirmed Plasmodium...

A current overview of the pharmacological composition of “La Chimique” consumed in Mayotte: Preliminary results of the CHASSE‐MAREE protocol
Mayotte Island, a French department, has for several years been faced with the consumption of a drug called “La Chimique.” The CHASSE-MAREE protocol aims to assess the composition of “La Chimique” products through successive sample collection campaigns. The first analytical results (80 samples collected in 2022) revealed that, as suspected, the main psychoactive constituents of this drug are SCRAs . This overview of SCRAs often includes associations and seems to vary from month to month and according to geographical location. AbstractMayotte Island, a French department located in the Mozambique Channel, has for sev...

Patterns of adverse childhood experiences and their associations with mental distress, substance use and sexual risk behaviors in Sub-Saharan Africa
CONCLUSIONS: Discrete clusters of co-occurring ACEs are associated with elevated odds of mental distress among females, and mental distress and substance use among males. Preventing ACEs may improve mental health among young women and men in LMICs in Sub-Saharan Africa.PMID:37806930 | DOI:10.1016/j.chiabu.2023.106494 (Source: Child Abuse and Neglect)

Field performance and cost-effectiveness of a point-of-care triage test for HIV virological failure in Southern Africa
CONCLUSIONS: The IP-10 LFA is an effective VF triage test for routine ART monitoring. Combining a highly sensitive, low-cost IP-10 LFA-based screening with targeted VL confirmatory testing could result in significant healthcare quality improvements and cost savings in settings with limited access to VL testing.PMID:37803882 | DOI:10.1002/jia2.26176 (Source: Journal of the International AIDS Society)

Perceived discrimination, adaptation and saudade among African migrants
This study aims to examine the relationships between perception of discrimination, adaptation and saudade. The sample consisted of 655 African migrants from Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau and Mozambique living in Portugal with a mean age of 38 years. The average duration of stay in Portugal was 22 years.Results indicated that length of residence impacted the difficulties experienced with saudade: respondents with longer lengths of stay in the society of settlement experienced less difficulty with saudade.
