Progress Toward Poliomyelitis Eradication - Worldwide, January 2021-March 2023
This report summarizes progress toward global polio eradication during January 1, 2021-March 31, 2023, and updates previous reports (1,2). In 2022, Afghanistan and Pakistan reported 22 WPV1 cases, compared with five in 2021; as of May 5, 2023, a single WPV1 case was reported in Pakistan in 2023. A WPV1 case was reported on the African continent for the first time since 2016, when officials in Malawi confirmed a WPV1 case in a child with paralysis onset in November 2021; neighboring Mozambique subsequently reported eight genetically linked cases. Outbreaks of polio caused by circulating vaccine-derived polioviruses (cVDPVs)...

Mobilizing resources with an investment case to mitigate cross-border malaria transmission and achieve malaria elimination in South Africa
Glob Health Action. 2023 Dec 31;16(1):2205700. doi: 10.1080/16549716.2023.2205700.ABSTRACTSouth Africa's effort to eliminate malaria is significantly challenged by a large number of imported malaria cases, especially from neighbouring Mozambique. The country has a funding gap to achieve its malaria elimination goals (prior to 2019) and is ineligible to receive a national allocation from the Global Fund. The findings of an IC were utilised to successfully mobilise resources for malaria elimination in South Africa in 2018. A five-step resource mobilisation strategy was implemented to highlight financing challenges and levera...

Whole genome sequencing of Ethiopian Brucella abortus isolates expands the known diversity of an early branching sub-Saharan African lineage
Brucellosis remains one of the most significant zoonotic diseases globally, responsible for both considerable human morbidity and economic losses due to its impacts on livestock productivity. Despite this, there remain significant evidence gaps in many low- and middle-income countries, including those of sub-Saharan Africa. Here we report the first molecular characterisation of Brucella sp. from Ethiopia. Fifteen Brucella sp. isolates from an outbreak in cattle from a herd in central Ethiopia were identified as Brucella abortus, using bacterial culture and molecular methods. Sequencing of the Ethiopian B. abortus isolates ...

Choosing blood pressure thresholds to inform pregnancy care in the community: An analysis of cluster trials
CONCLUSIONS: In the community, normal BP values do not provide reassurance about subsequent adverse outcomes. Given the similar performance of BP cut-offs of 135/85 and 140/90 mmHg for hypertension, and 155/105 and 160/110 mmHg for severe hypertension, digital decision support for women in the community should consider using these lower thresholds.PMID:37092252 | DOI:10.1111/1471-0528.17465 (Source: BJOG : An International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology)

Scrutinizing human resources for health availability and distribution in Mozambique between 2016 and 2020: a subnational descriptive longitudinal study
Overall, resilient health systems build upon sufficient, qualified, well-distributed, and motivated health workers; however, this precious resource is limited in numbers to meet people ’s demands, particularly ... (Source: Human Resources for Health)

Socio-demographic and economic inequity in the use of insecticide-treated bed nets during pregnancy: a survey-based case study of four sub-Saharan African countries with a high burden of malaria
In conclusion, in all the four countries, there were significant regional variations or differences in ITN use among pregnant mothers across all dimensions of inequality in the survey years. Tailored cost-effective interventions could be considered to improve ITN utilization among pregnant women. (Source: Archives of Public Health)

Susceptibility antibiotic screening reveals high rates of multidrug resistance of Salmonella, Shigella and Campylobacter in HIV infected and uninfected patients from Mozambique
Antibacterial resistance is a growing concern worldwide, including in Mozambique. Diarrhea is an important cause of mortality in Mozambique, yet few local studies have reported on the resistance of bacterial p... (Source: BMC Infectious Diseases)

Viruses, Vol. 15, Pages 1010: High-Risk Regions of African Swine Fever Infection in Mozambique
This study evaluated the spatiotemporal distribution and temporal trends of ASF in swine in Mozambique between 2000 and 2020. During this period, 28,624 cases of ASF were reported across three regions of the country. In total, the northern, central, and southern regions presented 64.9, 17.8, and 17.3% of the total cases, respectively. When analyzing the incidence risk (IR) of ASF per 100,000 pigs, the Cabo Delgado province had the highest IR (17,301.1), followed by the Maputo province (8868.6). In the space-time analysis, three clusters were formed in each region: (i) Cluster A involved the provinces of Cabo Delgado and Na...

Inverse Probability Weights for Quasi-Continuous Ordinal Exposures with a Binary Outcome: Method Comparison and Case Study
Am J Epidemiol. 2023 Apr 14:kwad085. doi: 10.1093/aje/kwad085. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTInverse probability weighting (IPW), a well-established method to control for confounding in observational studies with binary exposures, has been extended to analyses with continuous exposures. Methods developed for continuous exposures may not apply when the exposure is quasi-continuous due to irregular exposure distributions that violate key assumptions. We used simulations and cluster-randomized clinical trial data to assess four approaches developed for continuous exposures - ordinary least squares (OLS), covariate balancing g...
