Immunomodulators and immunosuppressants for relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis: a network meta-analysis
CONCLUSIONS: We are highly confident that, compared to placebo, two-year treatment with natalizumab, cladribine, or alemtuzumab decreases relapses more than with other DMTs. We are moderately confident that a two-year treatment with natalizumab may slow disability progression. Compared to those on placebo, people with RRMS treated with most of the assessed DMTs showed a higher frequency of treatment discontinuation due to AEs: we are moderately confident that this could happen with fingolimod, teriflunomide, interferon beta-1a, laquinimod, natalizumab and daclizumab, while our certainty with other DMTs is lower. We are als...

Prevalence and antibiotic resistance of Salmonella in organic and non-organic chickens on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, USA
This study investigated the prevalence of Salmonella in organic and non-organic chickens and the antimicrobial resistance profiles and virulence genes (invA, pagC, and spvC) in recovered Salmonella isolates.MethodsWhole chicken carcasses [organic (n = 240) and non-organic (n = 240)] were obtained monthly for 1 year (n = 480) from a retail store on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Salmonella isolation and identification were conducted by following the whole carcass enrichment method recommended by USDA-FSIS. Confirmed Salmonella isolates (organic n = 76; non-organic n = 137) were serotyped and tested for antibiotic susceptibi...

Application of metronidazole combined with minocycline in reducing infection after dental implant in patients with localized periodontitis
CONCLUSIONS: The administration of minocycline hydrochloride and metronidazole in patients with localized periodontitis undergoing implantation can reduce oral inflammatory response, reduce postoperative infection and other complications, and improve periodontal health.PMID:38171525 (Source: Shanghai Journal of Stomatology)

Association between doxycycline use and long-term functioning in patients with schizophrenia
CONCLUSIONS: In this observational study, doxycycline exposure is associated with a reduced incidence of disability pension. These data support further studies on the potential long term neuroprotective effects of doxycycline and level of functioning in schizophrenia patients.PMID:38169245 | DOI:10.1016/j.bbi.2023.12.036 (Source: Brain, Behavior, and Immunity)
