Electro-antibacterial therapy (EAT) to enhance intracellular bacteria clearance in pancreatic cancer cells
In this study, we investigate the use of electroporation in combination with metronidazole to enhance the clearance of intracellular Fusobacterium nucleatum within pancreatic cancer cells. We explore various parameters, including electric field strength, pulse width, and pulse number to assess the permeability of pancreatic cancer cells infected with F. nucleatum, compared to non-infected cells of the same type. We subsequently quantify the clearance of intracellular bacteria when these pulsing schemes are applied to a suspension of infected pancreatic cancer cells in the presence of metronidazole. Our results reveal disti...

Prevalence and antimicrobial resistance of bacterial enteropathogens in Crete, Greece, during 2011-2022
This study investigated the epidemiology and the antibiotic susceptibility of bacterial enteropathogens among diarrheal patients of all ages in Crete, Greece during 2011-2022. Stool specimens were tested by conventional cultural methods for Salmonella, Shigella, Campylobacter, diarrheagenic Escherichia coli (EPEC, STEC), Yersinia enterocolitica, Aeromonas species and Clostridioides difficile. Antimicrobial susceptibility was determined by the disk diffusion method for Enterobacterales, Campylobacter and Aeromonas, and by the gradient diffusion method for C. difficile. Of the 26,060 stool samples from patients of any age, 1...

The efficacy of combining adjuvants with non-surgical periodontal therapy in individuals with type 2 diabetes: A Bayesian network meta-analysis
CONCLUSIONS: Adjuvant use of metronidazole or alpha lipoic acid was the best adjunct option to provide clinically meaningful HbA1c levels and probing depth reductions. However, no strong recommendation can be drawn due to the scarcity of studies for each adjuvant treatment and the low certainty of the resultant evidence.PMID:38342946 | DOI:10.1111/jcpe.13946 (Source: Journal of Clinical Periodontology)

Nutritional Value and in vitro Antigiardial Activity of Anise (Pimpinella anisum L.) Seeds
Chem Biodivers. 2024 Feb 9:e202301254. doi: 10.1002/cbdv.202301254. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe present study focused on evaluating the proximate analysis, mineral composition, and in vitro anti-giardial activity of Pimpinella anisum seed extracts, which are aromatic plants with a long history of usage in folk and conventional medicine, as well as pharmaceutical manufacturing. Standard methods were used to determine the proximate analysis of the powdered plant sample, including dry matter, ash, fat, protein, fiber, and carbohydrates. The mineral contents of Pimpinella anisum seed were analyzed using Inductively Coupl...

GSE253746 Interactions of erythromycin and an antibiotic-mixture to the gut microbiome of juvenile rainbow trout
The objectives of experiment 1 were to understand uptake and depuration of ERY in juvenile rainbow trout (RBT) over a 7 d uptake followed by a 7 d depuration period using three concentrations of ERY. Furthermore, throughout the study changes in gut microbiome response were assessed. In experiment 2, a follow-up study was conducted using an identical experimental design to assess the impacts of an antibiotic-mixture (ERY, ampicillin, metronidazole, and ciprofloxacin at 100 µg/g each). Here, three matrices were analyzed, with gut collected for 16s metabarcoding, plasma for untargeted metabolomics, and brain for mRNA-seq ana...

Inhibition of choline kinase as an antiamoebic approach in Entamoeba histolytica infection
This study investigates a novel anti-amoebic approach targeting the CDP-choline pathway. Inhibition studies were conducted using potential choline kinase (CK) inhibitors to inhibit the EhCK enzyme, and RNA interference was employed to knock down the EhCK gene. Km and Vmax of purified EhCK and hCKa2 proteins were determined by pyruvate kinase-lactate dehydrogenase (PK-LDH) coupled assay. The IC50 values for EhCK and hCKa2 were determined with several commercial CK inhibitors. Selected inhibitors were incubated with E. histolytica trophozoites for 48 hours to determine the EC50 for each inhibitor. Silencing of gene encoding ...
