All Things ACGME/AOA Merger
There are many questions and concerns regarding the AOA and ACGME merger. Please use the information compiled below to gain a solid understanding of what is occurring and what the overall process is before creating a "merger" thread. I have provided links to many documents and websites that further expand on the information given below. ---- Definitions ACGME: Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. AOA/ACGME merger and DO surgical residency
Hello all, I wanted to pose a question to all you DO's eyeballing surgery/surgical sub-specialty. Given that my USMLE isn't an ungodly 260+(got 244), I cannot apply ACGME ortho with any realistic hope of a match so I am left with applying AOA. What do you think the prospect of these residency programs achieving ACGME approval is? Should I even bother applying since I would be SOL if the residency program closed mid-training? Bias against DOs in the orthopedic world?
Hey all, As I've just recently gone through the fellowship process (for ortho) I wanted to give you all a heads up as this topic of Bias against DOs is often discussed and the recent ACGME/AOA merger was supposed to resolve the conflict (yes i know we are early in the process). I truly don't care about the bias but I am also realistic that it does exist. I personally emailed all the fellowship programs I was interested in before I applied (many were major academic centers with high... Bias against DOs in the orthopedic world? KCU-COM vs ACOM please help!
Hey everyone! I was accepted to KCU-COM and ACOM and I have to make a decision. I really did love KCU-COM and it's preparation in boards and rotations, BUT I also really loved ACOM! Both campuses were amazing! However I have to make a decision soon and I don't have much time to do it. Any input or knowledge of either school to help me better understand this will greatly be appreciated especially since the merger heavily impacts the chance of residency! .Here is what I have so far ACOM... Should I take step 2?
Hi everyone, I'm going to be applying to PM&R and I know that it's a very DO friendly specialty and that the COMLEX is widely accepted but I was wondering if it would be worthwhile to still take the step 2 CK even if I did well for both exams (COMLEX 670+ , USMLE step 1 245+). Since the merger, everyone has been talking about the need to take both step 1 and step 2 now which prompted me to ask this. Thanks! (Source: Student Doctor Network)

AOA TRI 2016-2017 prior to ACGME PM & R
tl;dr: AOA TRIs fulfill requirements for PGY-1 year for advanced ACGME PM&R programs. To those of you who are osteopaths applying for advanced spots in PM&R this year and PGY-1s starting next summer, I emailed Caroline Fischer (exec director for PM&R accreditation) about this because there has been some confusion about whether or not an AOA TRI is an accepted PGY-1 prior to matriculating into an ACGME PM&R program, primarily due to the failed merger, shifting requirements, and different... How Much Are YOU Actually Worth?
This is a long read, but I hope well worth the time it will take. For the average physician who grinds it out every day, and comes home exhausted from running to make metrics and satisfaction scores, this is a must read. As we go along in this thread, I'll give additional follow-ups and track the progress of a small democratic group as it goes from start-up, to growth, to buyout, to CMG affiliate... After reading several posts about CMG acquisitions, SDG buyouts, and ranting and raving... How Much Are YOU Actually Worth? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

More merger worries
I know there are other posts, but this paper makes some good but downright scary implications for anyone in or considering going to a DO school. http://aodme.org/wp-content/uploads/The_Unintended_Consequences_of_the_ACGME_Merger.pdf The response from the AOA hardly addressed many of the concerns raised in the paper. Any thoughts? Edit: I saw old posts, but I want to hear more from students who are actually feeling the affects. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

From an Osteopathic Medicine point of view why agree to the merger?
Without making this a discussion of what will happen post merger, I'm curious as to why the AOA/AACOM agreed to the merger? If it will in fact shut out DOs to the more competitive and specialized residencies, why would they agree to put their students at a disadvantage?? Money? Reputation? Trying to figure out the why behind the merger thanks!! (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Eli5: how will the merger affect specialties like fm, pmr, psych?
Ive read the threads on the merger and there seems to be some conflicting information. Some say that many DO residencies will clos down while others say that certain fields, like fm, will actually grow. The general consensus seems to be that DO students aiming for highly competitive fields, like derm, ortho, urology, etc. will find it harder after a few years. What about those of us interested in fields considered "less competitive"? Will the board scores and grades required to get into fm... How will new schools impact osteopathic medicine?
So with all the new DO schools opening around the US, I'm wondering what the impact will be for DOs and DO students post merger? I'm thinking it will be harder to obtain residencies for DO students than it was 5 years ago due to increased competition from students from the new schools. Thoughts?
