Only taken COMLEX, how will the merger affect me?
I've been hearing so many different opinion on this and I've become so confused on what I should do. What I'm most concerned about is the rumor that once much of the AOA programs have been accredited by the ACGME, they would stop accepting the COMLEX without a USMLE, how true is this? I'm concerned because I just started 3rd year and won't be applying to residencies until next year and by that time, I'm afraid that much of the current AOA programs would have transitioned to ACGME and would... Merger Questions
Hi, I came across a survey (NRMP Program Director Survey) that shows the different criteria (ie. USMLE scores, publications, extracurriculars) needed for getting into a specific specialty. In the survey, I came across a graph called "frequency of programs interviewing and reviewing candidates" and saw that most of the highly competitive programs like Dermatology and Orthopedic will SELDOM or NEVER interview an osteopathic medical student. Does this mean any of us DO students who are aspiring... Merger Questions (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Dermatology match?
Hello, Class of 2019 here so the derm part of my match would be in 2020. I was wondering if anybody knows how AOA derm residencies will be accepting students in the future. I know that you first must do a TRI year and then apply the following year for DOs but with the merger how would that work? Would MD students do a TRI year or could they get away with doing a transitional year and then applying? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

MD / DO Residency Merger
Hi all -- I received an email today actually from SDN regarding a MD / DO residency merger, and from the initial sound of it, it appears to me the goal is to level to playing field which I wholeheartedly agree with and think makes sense. Based on this, my thought was that DO students might have more of an advantage in regards to residency placement (not respective to MD students, just more so relative to pre-merger years); but only IF the merger does what it intends, and residency programs... High COMLEX + Low USMLE + Merger = ??
Hi everyone, I've been very interested in FM since Day 1, and most of my extracurriculars and volunteer activities are oriented towards that specialty. I also had my heart set matching into a residency in California, as that is where my family is from. Board scores are in, and the results are: COMLEX Level 1 = 579, USMLE Step 1....209.... I'm not sure what happened with Step 1, as that score is significantly lower than my NBME's, but it is what it is, and I've come to terms with it. So,... High COMLEX + Low USMLE + Merger = ?? Can secondaries have unrelated paragraphs?
Hey all, i was just curious for secondaries that ask things like "Is there anything else you want to tell us?" Is it okay to make like one paragraph about your experiences and language acquisition from countries abroad, and the second paragraph addressing discrepancies in your academic record such as W's and explaining rough years? questions for DO's in ACGME program
I am a DO doing an ACGME residency in NYC. I have a few questions - I take the ABIM board since I did the ACGME residency, right? or is it AOBIM. Am I certified by ACGME or AOA. - Given that we did an ACGME residency in NY, I don't have to get the first year approved by AOA. - I go ahead to pursue a fellowship ( ex- AOA) do rules change regarding boards ( ie- I have to also take AOA IM boards). The confusion also arises with the merger. Thanks! (Source: Student Doctor Network)

DO Dermatology opportunities for next application cycle
Over the past 10 years, we are seeing an explosion in growth of DO Dermatology Residency Programs. There were about 15-18 programs 10 years ago. This past year, there are 32 active programs taking total of 55 new first year derm residents each year. With the ACGME merger and new AOA requirement for participating in the match, there are only 14 DO Derm programs that will be allow to participate in the AOA match. Of the 14 programs, I believe 9 of them have achieved Initial Accreditations.... DO Dermatology opportunities for next application cycle (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Estimated 40% ACGME D.O. residencies not achieving accreditation (paper)?
I think any students considering the DO route, and who are planning to take out between 200k-400k of student debt for their education should seriously consider the impact of the upcoming D.O and M.D. residency merger, and what will happen if a large portion of DO residencies do not attain accreditation, and how that may lead to a large number of DO graduates being unable to attain residency positions (for those who find this idea implausible, check out the law profession where a large % of... REALITY of the merger: PD: "We went from 170 applications to 450 applications our first cycle"
Very interesting interview with Dr. Rush former president of AOAO and PD of NOVA's orthopedic surgery residency at Broward Hospital that recruited 2 DOs and 1MD this past cycle. Episode 4 Dr. Joel Rush | Program Director Insights Key takeaways: - believes many programs will not make it to initial accreditation by 2020 - significantly more competitive with almost a tripling of applications their first cycle - USMLE is now... What's going to happen to osteopathic orthopedic residencies after the merger?
Are they going to be full of MDs now? Are some of them shutting down? I'm starting my first year at a DO school and just trying to look ahead, because ortho is definitely what I want to do. I feel like this merger is going to make it a lot harder to match into a formerly-AOA residency. It sounds like there are going to be more applicants (MDs) for less spots (if some of them shutting down.) Everyone plans on killing the boards. I do too. Once I get through Step 1 I'll see if it's still... What's going to happen to osteopathic orthopedic residencies after the merger? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

So you decide to go on a merger with a strategic...
This mainly goes to those who have gone through the process (@BLADEMDA et al), but would be interested in all comer ideas on this topic as it's a bit of an odd ball. It will likely never happen in an anesthesiologists career again. So better wise up and not screw it up. Let's speculate a lump sum of 2.5 mil. What do you think is the wisest way to allocate receivables from the sale of your shares? Pay off the house and all remaining debt? Invest all of it into the... Md do merger 2020 (bad for do)
This merger, to me, seems like an absolute awful idea. What I am basically grasping from this merger is DOs had specialty residencies that only DOs could attend. Now, MDs can attend these same residencies, and on average MDs have better stats than DOs. I am also not making out how the complex vs. USMLE will even factor into all of this. But in the long run DOs are shorted in this merger and MDs will prosper. Any thoughts? Am I wrong? (Source: Student Doctor Network)
