Osteopathic Recognition and MD Applicants
With the new merger I know that there are some previously AOA programs that converted but now have osteopathic recognition. What exactly does "osteopathic recognition" mean? and more importantly are these programs likely to interview or rank MD applicants or is it a waste of time and money to apply to these programs? Is 30 programs too little/just right/too much?
Level 1: 500-510 Level 2: 500-510 Passed PE No Step scores Should have 3 FM LOR (1 MD, 2 DO), and will be auditioning at 4 places (that I will be applying to). Is applying to 30 programs in the NE region a good number or should I apply to more? Want to stay in the general PA, NJ, DE area but matching somewhere is better than not matching! Getting nervous with the merger and the paranoia that somehow FM will become super competitive this match (2020). I know based on previous match data... Is 30 programs too little/just right/too much? Is residency merger good or bad?
Hello everyone. So I am a bit confused, many people are talking that in 2020 DO and MD residencies are going to merge, but what does it mean for MD and DO graduates? Will DOs be more competitive for top programs? Don't know much about residencies yet, so would like to shed light on this. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Current Anesthesia group getting Merged with an anesthesia management company, what is a reasonable offer?
Quick questions for those of you who have experienced this. I am currently working as an independent contractor all MD group in California. I’ve been here for 2 years, not a partner. Although I’m one of the more senior people at the particular hospital I’m working at. I was informed that there was a merger that is about to happen. My boss is told me that with this merger, I’d get a certain cash incentive over 3 years. We will continue to be independent contractors, but the national group... AOA/ACGME Merger & Assessing DO Schools
Prior to the merger, I could have chosen any osteopathic program in the country and be confident in matching without a problem. My assessment is that DO students (or schools) on the wrong side of the bell curve may be negatively impacted by increased competition at historically-AOA programs. Is it worth paying attention to the historical fraction of AOA and ACGME matches that a particular program lands? Is it innapropriate to bring up this information in "Why our school?" secondary promps... AOA/ACGME Merger & Assessing DO Schools (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Question about MD/DO merger
Now that ERAS has opened, I have been researching residency programs and came across the OK State anesthesiology program, a DO program. Their website has a list of requirements for "non-DO applicants" which looks like they require you to have 60 hours of OMM training and a DO letter of recommendation. Are DO programs allowed to have these requirements for MD students? It was my assumption that they wouldn't MD students wouldn't have to jump through these hoops with the new ACGME merger. If... MD/DO Degree Merger. Sooner than you think?
Hi All, I just wanted to start a discussion on the possibility of an MD/DO degree merger in the near future because I heard a couple people high up in academia say that they will merge the degrees in the next few years. One of them pointed me to a court case in 1982 (Dr. John Maceluch, et al., Plaintiffs-appellants, v. Dr. Charley E. Wysong, President of the Composite Stateboard of Medicalexaminers of Texas, et... Future MD DO merger?
So I'm aware that this is probably a touchy issue but I was recently made aware of the merger between MD and DO residency programs. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but the accrediting bodies for MD and DO medical schools are still separate, right? Is there any chance in the coming decades that this changes? It seems the curriculum is largely the same (as it should if both follow evidence based medicine) with the addition of OMM for DOs. Maybe I am missing something obvious, but doesn't it... Private Equity in Ophthalmology
Ophthalmology and optometry is rapidly succumbing to acquisition and consolidation by private equity firms nationwide. The primary motive of private equity appears to be extraction of profit out of the practice and of older practice owners to maximize profit and exit strategy. Ophthalmologists will now become a commodity. Much has been said about the pros and cons of selling one's practice to private equity. There appears to be little upside for current associate doctors to stay or... Private Equity in Ophthalmology (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Does the osteopathic basic science curriculum prepare you for STEP1 by default or is there considerable more prep work needed to get ready for STEP?
I'm still trying to understand the merger and how that affects future DO students but do you think the osteopathic curriculum today will get you ready for either exam or do you really need to put in a lot of additional studying to get ready for STEP after preparing for COMLEX? I'm looking into DO schools but I don't know too much about the difference in curriculum's. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Rocky Vista University (RVU) Acquisition by Saint George University (SGU)
I'm a first year student at RVU having just started this week. The president of RVU gave an announcement that RVU is being acquired by Medforth, which is the parent company that also owns Saint George University in Grenada. As many of you may know, SGU is the stereotypical Caribbean model for medical schools; ie high attrition low match rate. My fear is that the Caribbean model will be implemented at RVU and the education I receive will be changed for the worse. Now, my question is should I... Neurology residency chances
OMS IV Applying as the guinea pig in the merger class. Stats GPA > 3.6 at minimum puts me within the top half of the class. LORs: strong letters for core rotation preceptors that I worked one on one with. Comlex: 500-550, expect to be over 550 with comlex 2. No usmle and I am not taking it. I know it’s risky but it’s too late in the game and I’ll apply/go to the end of the earth if I have to. Rotations: honored every rotation except geriatrics, go figure. Extracurricular... Illinois (MD) vs Ohio University-HCOM (DO)
Hi all, recently got into Illinois' MD program as an out-of-state student, and I'm weighing that offer over OU-HCOM (in-state DO). I would really appreciate input, so thanks in advance! Illinois + Recorded, non-mandatory lectures and a systems-based curriculum + MD opens more doors for competitive specialties and residencies (especially given the upcoming ACGME merger); also won't have to worry about OMM/COMLEX + Will be in either Chicago, Peoria, or Rockford; all of which are at... Is the DO degree relevant anymore?
Hi all! I am going into medicine, and like all med students, I am concerned about matching. Given the recent residency merger and the indistinguishable curriculum of MD/DO schools (with the exception of the added OMM) I was wondering why there is so much resistance from the AOA to change the degree to an MD. In this current time, it seems like it just creates unnecessary bias when trying to get a residency spot. Furthermore, most DO students seem to dislike explaining what the degree is or... Should I apply DO given the match merger?
Hi guys, I would really like some guidance on what to do. I have a 3.85 gpa with great leadership experience, clinical experience, volunteering and everything else with the exception of research. The big problem is that I have a 500 MCAT. This score obviously bars me from having any realistic chance at getting into an MD school. I have no problem with DO philosophy ( in fact I probably prefer it). If i wanted to go primary care I don't believe there would be any issue going DO, however I...
