Comparative assessment of conventional and light-curable fluoride varnish in the prevention of enamel demineralization during fixed appliance therapy: a split-mouth randomized controlled trial
ConclusionThe result of this study indicate that single application of LCFV (Clinpro ™ XT) can prevent enamel demineralization for longer duration (for up to 4 months) of time as compared to conventional fluoride varnish (Duraphat™, 45 days) during fixed appliance therapy.RegistrationThe trial was registered retrospectively in the Clinical Trial Registry-India, number CTRI/2016/09/007232. Do different maxillary expansion appliances influence the outcomes of the treatment?
ConclusionsThere is moderate evidence that all designs produce significant expansion at the mid-palatal suture. However, lack of studies comparing appliances and protocols has been found. Finally, no evidence-based conclusions could be drawn about the appliance effect on teeth tipping.Implications of key findingsNo appliance appears to be superior when it comes to expansion in the mid-palatal suture. Therefore, the tooth-borne appliance might be preferable until further high-quality studies conclude otherwise.FundingThe project was funded through the Department of Orthodontics, Postgraduate Dental Education Center, Region ...

Open versus closed surgical exposure of palatally impacted maxillary canines: comparison of the different treatment outcomes —a systematic review
ConclusionAccording to existing articles we may conclude that there is no difference between the two techniques regarding the periodontal outcomes and aesthetic appearance. The surgical procedure is shorter in the open exposure group and the amount of postoperative pain during the first day is similar between the open and closed surgical exposure patients. However, these conclusions are based on two single trials with high level of evidence, while the rest of the studies present high risk of bias. (Source: The European Journal of Orthodontics)

Differential microRNA expression in cultured palatal fibroblasts from infants with cleft palate and controls
ConclusionsFor the first time, we have shown that several miRNAs appear to be dysregulated in palatal fibroblasts from patients with nsCLP and nsCPO. Furthermore, large-scale genomic and expression studies are needed to validate these findings. (Source: The European Journal of Orthodontics)

Speech and orthodontic appliances: a systematic literature review
ConclusionsLingual fixed appliances, palatal expanders, and Hawley retainers have an evident influence on speech production. The /i/, /s/, /t/, and /d/ sounds are the primarily affected ones. The results of this systematic review should be interpreted with caution and more high-quality RCTs with larger sample sizes and longer follow-up periods are needed.RegistrationThe protocol for this systematic review (CRD42017056573) was registered in the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO). Dental age comparison in patients born with unilateral cleft lip and palate to a control sample using Demirjian and Willems methods
ConclusionsThe null hypothesis was rejected. Willem ’s method as compared to Demirjian’s displayed greater accuracy in estimating CA. Both methods overestimated CA but detected DA delay in NSUCLP children compared to the control group. However, the methods were inconsistent in estimating gender CA. Evaluating low-level laser therapy effect on reducing orthodontic pain using two laser energy values: a split-mouth randomized placebo-controlled trial
ConclusionLow-level laser therapy, applied at two different laser energy values, is ineffective in relieving elastomeric separators induced orthodontic pain.Trial registrationThis trial was not registered.FundingNo funding to be declared. (Source: The European Journal of Orthodontics)

Long-term effects of Class II Herbst treatment on the pharyngeal airway width
ConclusionIn the long term, Herbst treatment resulted in a significant post-treatment increase of PA width, possibly due to an increased lower posterior facial height development compared to untreated individuals. (Source: The European Journal of Orthodontics)

Accuracy of MDCT and CBCT in three-dimensional evaluation of the oropharynx morphology
ConclusionSignificant differences were observed in the volume and cross-sectional area measurements of the oropharynx acquired using different MDCT and CBCT scanners. The Siemens MDCT and the Vatech CBCT scanners were more accurate than the GE MDCT, NewTom 5G, and Accuitomo CBCT scanners. In clinical settings, CBCT scanners offer an alternative to MDCT scanners in the assessment of the oropharynx morphology. (Source: The European Journal of Orthodontics)

The influence of miniscrew insertion torque
ConclusionsInsertion torque can influence the degree of OM insertion and, subsequently, the amount of microdamage formed following insertion into 1.5 mm thick porcine tibia bone. An increase in insertion torque corresponds with greater insertion depth and larger amounts of microdamage. (Source: The European Journal of Orthodontics)

Proinflammatory mediators related to orthodontically induced periapical root resorption in rat mandibular molars
ConclusionsThese data suggest that proinflammatory mediators expressed in periodontal cells may synergistically promote apical root resorption in response to continuous heavy mechanical force applied to teeth. (Source: The European Journal of Orthodontics)

Evidence of secular trend in mandibular pubertal growth
ConclusionsMandibular growth appears to be subject to a secular trend. When related to skeletal age, this secular trend seems to be more accentuated than the established secular trend for somatic pubertal growth. (Source: The European Journal of Orthodontics)

Measurement of forces and moments around the maxillary arch for treatment of a simulated lingual incisor and high canine malocclusion using straight and mushroom archwires in fixed lingual appliances
ConclusionsResults from this study suggest that mushroom archwires may provide better mechanics for movement of teeth in the anterior segment when using a round archwire; however, only biomechanical data was considered in this study and there are many factors that need to be considered in treatment planning. Acceptability comparison between Hawley retainers and vacuum-formed retainers in orthodontic adult patients: a single-centre, randomized controlled trial
ConclusionsOver a 6-month period of retention, VFR was significantly more acceptable than HR in speech, appearance, gingival irritation, swallowing, self-confidence, and comfort. Subjects in the HR group believed that their retainers were significantly more durable than those in the VFR group at the final assessment. Both retainers were equal regarding fitting of the appliance, biting, and hygiene perception.RegistrationNot registered.ProtocolThe protocol was not published before trial commencement.FundingThis trial was funded by the Saudi Swiss Consultant Dental Centre.
