Association between severity of hypodontia and cephalometric skeletal patterns: a retrospective study
ConclusionThe white Caucasian group followed a pattern that has previously been reported in other studies. For Black-British and Arabian/Indian groups ’ findings were inconsistent and no specific pattern emerged for different degrees of hypodontia. (Source: The European Journal of Orthodontics)

A cephalometric study of the skeletal and dento-alveolar effects of the modified Louisiana State University activator in Class II malocclusion
ConclusionsMLSUA treatment corrected the Class II malocclusion by accelerating mandibular growth in the short-term with minimal dento-alveolar compensation, and the correction was maintained before deband. The treatment may be more effective if started at puberty. The mandibular, palatal, and occlusal planes remained stable throughout the treatment. Brachyfacial patients showed more favourable horizontal growth. (Source: The European Journal of Orthodontics)

Looking Beyond Traditional Metrics in Orthodontics: An Altmetric Study on the Most Discussed Articles on the Web
ConclusionsVisibility of orthodontic articles on the Web is not significantly correlated with citations. Studies on socio-demographics had significantly higher number of online mentions. More constructive online presence of orthodontic journals is needed to reinforce dissemination of research data among scholars and non-scholars. (Source: The European Journal of Orthodontics)

Effect of orthodontic treatment on periodontal clinical attachment: a systematic review and meta-analysis
ConclusionsAccording to existing evidence from longitudinal clinical studies orthodontic treatment with fixed appliances has little to no clinically relevant effect on periodontal clinical attachment levels.RegistrationPROSPERO (CRD42017057042).FundingNone. Open versus closed surgical exposure for permanent impacted canines: a systematic review and meta-analyses
ConclusionsBased on existing evidence, open surgical exposure seems to be superior in treatment duration and ankylosis risk over the closed technique. Due to the limited number of small included trials, further research is needed for robust clinical recommendations.RegistrationPROSPERO (CRD42016051916). The impact of Cone Beam CT on financial costs and orthodontists ’ treatment decisions in the management of maxillary canines with eruption disturbance
ConclusionsFor the patient cases presented in this study, most treatment decisions were the same irrespective of radiological method. Accordingly, this study does not support routine use of CBCT regarding patients with maxillary canine with eruption disturbance. (Source: The European Journal of Orthodontics)

Gingival recession in mandibular incisors and symphysis morphology —a retrospective cohort study
ConclusionWithin the limitations of this study, there is no evidence that the overall morphology of the mandibular symphysis is associated with gingival recession development. (Source: The European Journal of Orthodontics)

Does long-term intraoral service affect the mechanical properties and elemental composition of multistranded wires of lingual fixed retainers?
ConclusionsBoth wires seemed to maintain their mechanical and elemental integrity within a period of 14-year intraoral exposure, whereas no measurable ionic release could be identified. (Source: The European Journal of Orthodontics)

Corticotomy affects both the modus and magnitude of orthodontic tooth movement
ConclusionA decreased bone density influences not only the amount of tooth movement, but also its type. This study suggests that the moment-to-force ratios used in conventional orthodontics should be modified in case of techniques that decrease bone density to enhance tooth movement rate. Interpreting weightings of the peer assessment rating index and the discrepancy index across contexts on Chinese patients
ConclusionsThe Chinese-weighted PAR index and DI were capable of predicting 62 per cent and 73 per cent of total variance in the professional judgment of malocclusion severity in Chinese patients. Differential prediction across Angle classifications merits attention since different weighting formulas were found. (Source: The European Journal of Orthodontics)

Effectiveness of extraction of primary canines for interceptive management of palatally displaced permanent canines: a systematic review and meta-analysis
ConclusionsExtraction of primary canines in the mixed dentition may increase the chance of subsequent successful eruption of PDC in the long term. However, better study standardization is necessary. (Source: The European Journal of Orthodontics)

Performance of Hawley-type retainers: a systematic review of randomized clinical trials
ConclusionsGiven the overall quality of the available evidence and the multitude of parameters, which may have affected the results of the included trials, good practice would suggest further research in the respective field in order to increase both the quantity and quality of information available.RegistrationPROSPERO (CRD42015029279)FundingNo funding was received for the present systematic review. Intra-observer reliability and agreement of manual and digital orthodontic model analysis
ConclusionsAlthough both work-flows were reliable, the investigated digital work-flow proved to be more reliable and yielded on average larger tooth sizes. Averaged differences between methods were within 0.5 mm for directly measured outcomes but wide ranges are expected for some computed space parameters due to cumulative error. Growing patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy: longitudinal changes in their dentofacial morphology and orofacial functional capacities
ConclusionThe results indicate that DMD influences the facial morphology, dental arch dimensions and oral functional capacities. The longitudinal perspective of this study revealed that the worsening of most of the measured parameters is associated with the progression of the disease. Besides the expected deterioration of the functional measurements, we found in all patients, a marked transverse increase of the posterior part of the dental arches, more in the lower than in the upper, resulting in posterior crossbites, as well as a tendency towards a skeletal Class III relationship.
