Vibration accelerates orthodontic tooth movement by inducing osteoclastogenesis via transforming growth factor- β signalling in osteocytes
ConclusionsOrthodontic tooth movement was accelerated by supplementary vibration through the promotion of the production of TGF- β1 in osteocytes and subsequent osteoclastogenesis. (Source: The European Journal of Orthodontics)

The effect of orthodontic treatment on facial attractiveness: a systematic review and meta-analysis
ConclusionsOrthodontic treatment has a clinically weak effect on facial attractiveness when compared to no treatment. The same is true when a combined orthodontic/surgical treatment is compared to orthodontics alone.RegistrationPROSPERO #: CRD42020169904 (Source: The European Journal of Orthodontics)

Periodontal ligament cells derived small extracellular vesicles are involved in orthodontic tooth movement
ConclusionsThe notable decrease in the OTM distance after small EV blocking and the significant alteration of the sICAM-1 level in the hPDLC-originated small EVs under compression provide a new vista into small EV-related OTM biology. (Source: The European Journal of Orthodontics)

Long noncoding RNA GAS5 alleviates the inflammatory response of human periodontal ligament stem cells by regulating the NF- κB signalling pathway
ConclusionsGAS5 alleviated the expression of cytokines in PDLSCs by inhibiting activation of the TNF- α-mediated NF-κB pathway. These findings provide new insight into the regulation of the PDLSCs inflammation response. (Source: The European Journal of Orthodontics)

An overview of the intraoral features and craniofacial morphology of growing and adult Japanese cleidocranial dysplasia subjects
ConclusionsThe number of supernumerary teeth increased with age. The maxilla was average to anteriorly positioned, and the mandible was counter-clockwise rotated and prognathic for all groups. These characteristic craniofacial morphologies and changes of intraoral conditions at different ages in CCD patients should be considered when proposing rational orthodontic treatment plans. Radiographic and histological assessment of root resorption associated with conventional and mini-screw assisted rapid palatal expansion: a systematic review
Conclusions and implicationsMaxillary expansion with RPE can lead to root resorption of maxillary posterior teeth. Root resorption occurs more frequently on buccal surfaces on maxillary posterior teeth. Limited evidence suggests that MARPE may lead to reduced root resorption than RPE.RegistrationThis systematic review was conducted following the Cochrane handbook for systematic reviews and interventions and reported according to the guidelines of Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses. The protocol was registered at PROSPERO database (https://www.crd.york.ac.uk/prospero/; registration number: PR...

Evaluation of patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) during surgically-assisted acceleration of orthodontic treatment: a systematic review and meta-analysis
ConclusionsAll surgical interventions were minimally invasive. There was very low to low evidence that acceleration caused mild to moderate pain and discomfort on the first day after the surgical intervention and disappeared completely at one week following surgery. Functional impairments were found within acceptable limits immediately and in the short-term follow-up. More high-quality randomized controlled clinical trials are needed to establish good evidence in this field.RegistrationThe protocol of this systematic review was registered in PROSPERO database (CRD42021274481) during the first stages of this review. Comparison of automated digital Peer Assessment Rating compared with measurements performed by orthodontists, dental students, and assistants using plaster, additive manufactured, and digital models
ConclusionsPAR scoring using plaster, 3D printed, and digital study models by orthodontists, dental auxiliaries, dental students, and a fully automated method produced very similar results and can hence be considered equivalent. Automated measurements improve repeatability compared with all groups of practitioners, but this did not reach the significance level. (Source: The European Journal of Orthodontics)

Dento-skeletal response to three different protocols of rapid maxillary expansion in hyperdivergent growing subjects: a longitudinal retrospective study
ConclusionsThe E-RME protocol allows for a greater skeletal expansion and produces a lower buccal tipping of the first permanent upper molars. The use of the BB in 6-RME/BB group shows a similar attitude to the E-RME protocol then can be considered an effective therapeutic alternative. (Source: The European Journal of Orthodontics)

Gender disparity in speakers of the European Orthodontic Society conferences held between 2015 and 2020: a cross-sectional report
Conclusions and implicationsGender disparity related to invited speakers at the EOS 2015 –20 annual conferences was unequivocally confirmed. Nevertheless, gender differences were not identified in oral presentations. Firm efforts to ensure female scientist’s voice is equally represented are needed including a move from theory to practice.
