Vacuum-formed retainers and bonded retainers for dental stabilization —a randomized controlled trial. Part II: patients’ perceptions 6 and 18 months after orthodontic treatment
ConclusionsBoth groups reported high treatment outcome satisfaction and low levels of side-effects during the retention phase. Nevertheless, the VFR group reported more pain and discomfort at T1 and at T3. Self-reported compliance was the same in both groups. The VFR group was more concerned about relapse.Trial registrationNCT03070444 (https://clinicaltrials.gov). (Source: The European Journal of Orthodontics)

Biomarkers of orthodontic tooth movement with fixed appliances and vibration appliance therapy: a pilot study
ConclusionsSupplemental vibratory force during orthodontic treatment with fixed appliances does not affect biomarkers of bone remodelling or the RMAA.LimitationsThe main limitation of the study was the small sample size and the large variability in the salivary biomarkers.HarmsNo harms were observed during the duration of the trial.ProtocolThe protocol was not published prior to trial commencement.RegistrationThe study was registered in Clinical Trials.gov (NCT02119455) first posted on April 2014. Patient satisfaction after orthognathic surgery: a 3 year follow-up of 60 high-angle Class II individuals
Conclusions and implicationsA higher rate of dissatisfaction was found than what has usually been reported for othognathic surgical patients, and this was associated with a persisting AOB. In addition, mandibular relapse and impaired sensory function were related to dissatisfaction and are associated with mandibular surgery. Prospective high-angle Class II patients should be comprehensively informed about the unpredictability of treatment outcomes in terms of occlusion and facial appearance. Upper airway volumetric changes of obstructive sleep apnoea patients treated with oral appliances: a systematic review and meta-analysis
ConclusionsTreatment with OAs in OSA may lead to a significant increase of the upper airway volume with a subsequent decrease of AHI. The velopharynx seems to be affected the most from OA therapy. (Source: The European Journal of Orthodontics)

Mandibular movements in children with deciduous and mixed dentition and in young adults with permanent dentition —the association between movements and occlusal traits
ConclusionMandibular movement capacities are age and gender dependent. Maximum mouth opening, mandibular laterotrusion, and protrusion are related, and mandibular movement and some occlusal traits are associated. (Source: The European Journal of Orthodontics)

Oral and maxillofacial outcomes in children with microcephaly associated with the congenital Zika syndrome
ConclusionChildren with microcephaly resulting from a congenital Zika infection showed functional, oral, and maxillofacial changes and smaller facial development in comparison with non-CZS children in the same age group. (Source: The European Journal of Orthodontics)

Predictive factors for canine position in patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate
Conclusions/ImplicationsWith increased age for bone grafting, decreased age for hard palate closure and transposition, an association with abnormal canine position was found. A rigorous monitoring of cleft canine eruption is, therefore, advocated. (Source: The European Journal of Orthodontics)

Satellite cell capacity for functional adaptation of masseter muscle in Class II and Class III patients after orthognathic surgery —a pilot study
ConclusionsThe significant decline ofPax7 in Class II patients indicates a deficiency of stimulated SC post-surgically. The expression ofCD34 andMyf5 in Class II stayed unchanged. In contrast, there was an upregulation for all Class III patients, mainly in females, shown post-surgically. This may be one reason for weak functional adaptation and relapse in Class II patients. The impact of obesity on orthodontic treatment outcome in adolescents: a prospective clinical cohort study
ConclusionsThere were no significant differences in treatment duration between obese and normal-weight patients. Obesity does not appear to be a risk factor for negative orthodontic treatment outcome with fixed appliances. (Source: The European Journal of Orthodontics)

The upper airway volume effects produced by Hyrax, Hybrid-Hyrax, and Keles keyless expanders: a single-centre randomized controlled trial
ConclusionsRME resulted in relatively small increases in total upper airway volume and its separate compartments, with mostly no statistically significant differences across the Hyrax, Hybrid-Hyrax, and Keles groups.LimitationsSignificantly greater attrition was found in the Keles group due to appliance failure. The current trial might possibly be under-powered to detect differences between groups, if such exist.HarmsKeles expanders blocked during activations and required substitution for completion of treatment.ProtocolThe protocol was not published before trial commencement.RegistrationAustralian and New Zealand Clinical...

The relation of severe malocclusion to patients ’ mental and behavioral disorders, growth, and speech problems
ConclusionOur results indicate that patients with severe mandibular retrognatia, lip incompetence, or neurodevelopmental disorders were found to have significantly more speech problems than controls. During orthodontic treatment of patients with severe malocclusion, special attention should be paid to patients with severe mandibular retrognatia, lip incompetence, and speech problems to detect signs of possible neurodevelopmental disorders and record if potential follow-up measures are in place. Three-dimensional changes in the craniofacial complex associated with soft-diet feeding
ConclusionsOur 3D surface-based analysis demonstrated that SD feeding resulted in reduced 3D bony development at the region where the chewing muscles attach to the zygomatic arches and the temporal and parietal bones. Interestingly, SD feeding induced an anterior shift in the temporal and parietal bone regions, which can affect the skeletal inter-jaw relationship. (Source: The European Journal of Orthodontics)

Relapse 1 week after bracket removal: a 3D superimpositional analysis
ConclusionsPost-treatment changes in tooth position were mostly related to tooth movement during treatment. The reported correlations may help clinicians predict short-term relapse, evaluate long-term retention need, and design individualized retention schemes.
