Impacts of using orthodontic appliances on the quality of life of children and adolescents: systematic review and meta-analysis
Conclusions and implicationsBased on very low certainty of evidence, wearing appliances does not seem to have a significant negative impact during the first year of orthodontic treatment. However, the meta-analytic results suggest that functional limitations in the first 3 months of treatment can be slightly more critical for the impact on the oral health quality of life and consequent patient adherence to treatment.FundingThis study was financed by the Coordena ção de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - Brazil (CAPES), Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico - Brazil (CNPq), and Fund...

Reliability of cephalometric superimposition for the assessment of craniofacial changes: a systematic review
ConclusionsCurrently, there is no cephalometric superimposition method that has been proved to deliver accurate results. There is an urgent need for further research in this topic, since this is a primary assessment method to assess craniofacial changes over time for several relevant disciplines.RegistrationPROSPERO (CRD42020200349). Is data missing? An assessment of publication bias in orthodontic systematic reviews from 2010 to 2021
ConclusionsAppropriate methodology and rigorous practices for appraisal of publication bias are underreported in SRs within the orthodontic literature since 2010 and up-to-date, while other established methodologies including search strategies for unpublished data or communication with authors appear currently suboptimal. A qualitative meta-synthesis of research into patients ’ past experiences and perceptions of orthodontic treatment outcomes
ConclusionsOrthodontic patients mainly viewed their experiences and treatment results positively. Desirable aesthetic outcomes, psychosocial outcomes, and satisfaction with smiles were often reported in the studies reviewed. However, some barriers to optimal experiences were noticed concerning orthodontic retention.RegistrationPROSPERO (CRD42020180121). (Source: The European Journal of Orthodontics)

The effect of micro-osteoperforations on orthodontic space closure investigated over 12 weeks: a split-mouth, randomized controlled clinical trial
ConclusionThis 12-week randomized split-mouth controlled clinical trial showed two MOPs that are 5 mm deep, applied once prior to space closure, did not create clinically significant increase in maxillary premolar space closure.ProtocolThe protocol was not published before trial commencement.RegistrationTrial was not registered.FundingThe Australian Society of Orthodontists Foundation for Research and Education. Is there variation in the depth of the curve of Spee in individuals with different dentoskeletal patterns? A systematic review with meta-analysis
ConclusionsAlthough an apparent influence of dentoskeletal Class II, Class III malocclusion, deep bite, and the hypodivergent skeletal pattern on the depth of the COS is suggested, it is not possible to make definitive conclusions on the matter due to the very low certainty of the evidence. Further high-quality research is necessary. (Source: The European Journal of Orthodontics)

A non-cephalometric two-dimensional appraisal of soft tissue changes by functional therapy in Class II patients: a systematic review and meta-analysis
ConclusionsCurrent evidence suggests the positive effects of FA on the facial attractiveness in growing and non-growing patients. FA normalize the lip relationship. Furthermore, they tend to decrease facial convexity and advance the chin point. More pleasing results can be expected in growing patients. Orthodontists are more generous when assessing treatment changes as compared to laypeople.RegistrationPROSPERO registration (CRD42021254835). (Source: The European Journal of Orthodontics)

The validation of orthodontic artificial intelligence systems that perform orthodontic diagnoses and treatment planning
ConclusionsTwo AI systems that output a prioritized problem list and create a treatment plan were developed. The clinical system ability of the former system showed a mid-rank in the peer group, and the latter system was almost equivalent to the worst orthodontist. Comparison of self-etch primers with conventional acid-etch technique for bonding brackets in orthodontics: a systematic review and meta-analysis
ConclusionsThe bracket bonding failure and ARI score were not significantly different between self-etch and conventional AE bonding systems. The bonding time was lower for the SEP, but some other requirements for SEPs like pumice prophylaxis could diminish this advantage.RegistrationThe protocol for this systematic review was registered at PROSPERO with the ID CRD42021248540. Bone turnover markers in gingival crevicular fluid and blood serum of patients with fixed orthodontic appliances
ConclusionsThis is the first time PINP and CTX have been evaluated in the GCF and serum of orthodontic patients with fixed appliances. No statistically significant alterations of CTX and PINP levels in the GCF and the serum of patients were recorded over time during the initial stages of orthodontic treatment. 3D Analysis of maxillary incisor root inclinations in cases of unilateral maxillary canine impaction
ConclusionsPatients with impacted maxillary canines, whether PIC or BIC, do not show generalized retroclination or proclination of all four maxillary incisor roots. Instead, changes in incisor root inclination were only ipsilateral to the impacted canine. BIC is only associated with palatal displacement of the ipsilateral lateral incisor root, whereas PIC is associated with labial root displacement of both ipsilateral incisors.
