Cephalometric effects of Pushing Splints 3 compared with rapid maxillary expansion and facemask therapy in Class III malocclusion children: a randomized controlled trial
ConclusionRME/FM therapy and PS3 are both effective therapies for the early correction of Class III malocclusion. The PS3 controlled better mandibular divergency reducing the clockwise rotation in patients with higher mandibular inclination.RegistrationThis study was not registered in a clinical trial registry. Orthodontic treatment and root resorption: an overview of systematic reviews
Conclusions and implicationsThere is a limited number of high-quality studies in terms of OIIRR. The influence of fixed appliance on root resorption was noted; however, the cause and effect relationship between OIIRR and orthodontic biomechanics has not been confirmed. Avoiding heavy, continuous forces and a greater amount of apical displacement over a long duration of treatment is recommended. Precautionary measures should be carefully considered when treating patients with a high risk of OIIRR.RegistrationCRD42020166629. (Source: The European Journal of Orthodontics)

A tool for assessment of risk of bias in studies of adverse effects of orthodontic treatment applied in a systematic review on external root resorption
ConclusionsAs the tool and its application highlight important issues to consider when planning, conducting, and reporting research, the tool may have a valuable role for quality enhancement of future studies of outcomes of orthodontic treatment. The tool may also serve for authors when planning SRs. Our SR identified a need for studies that use rigorous methodology and transparent reporting.RegistrationPROSPERO (ID = CRD42018084725). Factors related to maxillary expander loss due to anchoring deciduous molars exfoliation during treatment in the mixed dentition phase
ConclusionsThe probability of a second deciduous molar to be successfully used as maxillary expander anchorage for at least 16 months is above 94 per cent; when at baseline, the corresponding premolar cusp is apical to the HPC line. (Source: The European Journal of Orthodontics)

Comparison between two screws for maxillary expansion: a multicenter randomized controlled trial on patient ’s reported outcome measures
ConclusionsPatients in the Leaf group experienced a lower degree of pain, especially during the first week following the application of the expander. For the other variables, no significant differences were reported between the two treatments.RegistrationThe study was registered in the ISRCTN register on 8 November 2016 with the number ISRCTN18263886. Modelling risk factors for high/low Psychosocial Impact of Dental Aesthetics Questionnaire (PIDAQ) in the Australian adults
ConclusionsHigher PIDAQ scores that have a greater impact on OHRQOL were associated with poorer self-rated general and oral health. This may be explained by unfavourable dental attendance and oral health habits. The positive correlation with OIDP scores verifies the validity of the PIDAQ. Those who had received OT had lower PIDAQ and OIDP scores. (Source: The European Journal of Orthodontics)

Occlusal traits and longitudinal dental changes in children and adolescents with congenital or childhood onset myotonic dystrophy
Conclusions/implicationsIn comparison to healthy controls, children and adolescents with DM1 have shown already at an early age a higher prevalence of both anterior open bite and posterior crossbite. These occlusal traits did not change with time apart from the upper narrow intermolar width, which further decreased with time. (Source: The European Journal of Orthodontics)

The role of HIF-1 α in nicotine-induced root and bone resorption during orthodontic tooth movement
ConclusionsStudy results indicate that the nicotine-induced increase in osteoclastogenesis and periodontal bone resorption during OTM may not be mediated by hypoxic effects or HIF-1 α stabilization in the context of nicotine-induced vasoconstriction, but rather by an alternative mechanism. The relationship between malocclusion and oral health-related quality of life among adolescents: a systematic literature review and meta-analysis
ConclusionsAdolescents with severe levels of malocclusion might have among the worst levels of OHRQoL. The effects of malocclusion on OHRQoL were influenced by the age of the adolescents as well as by their culture and environment.RegistrationPROSPERO (CRD42020178657).
