3D Facial morphology in children affected by spinal muscular atrophy type 2 (SMAII)
Conclusions/ImplicationsSMA type II children possess peculiar facial alterations that may be due to the altered muscular activity. As feeding problems may derive also by malocclusion and masticatory muscular alterations, a detailed assessment of the craniofacial individual alterations should be considered in the standards of care of these patients. Effect of verbal and written information on pain perception in patients undergoing fixed orthodontic treatment: a randomized controlled trial
ConclusionA combination of verbal and written information on orthodontic pain after placement of fixed appliances reduced patient ’s self-reported pain in the early stages.RegistrationThis study was not registered. (Source: The European Journal of Orthodontics)

The effectiveness of mandibular advancement devices in the treatment of obstructive sleep apnoea in adults: a methodological quality assessment of systematic reviews
ConclusionsThe methodological quality of SRs was suboptimal and warrants further improvement in order to provide strong evidence of MAD effectiveness and increase applicability of SR results for clinical decision-making. (Source: The European Journal of Orthodontics)

Does medication administration affect the rate of orthodontic tooth movement and root resorption development in humans? A systematic review
ConclusionsThe aforementioned substances may show varying effects on the rate of orthodontic tooth movement and root resorption development in human subjects. Despite the observed limitations, the orthodontist should be able to identify patients taking pharmaceuticals and consider any implications related to orthodontic treatment.RegistrationPROSPERO (CRD42017078208). A priori power considerations in orthodontic research: a 3 year meta-epidemiologic study
ConclusionsPresentation ofa priori power considerations for sample size calculations was not universal in contemporary orthodontic literature, while specific study designs such as observational or animal andin vitro studies were less likely to report such considerations. Space closure versus space opening for bilateral absent upper lateral incisors: what is the duration of orthodontic treatment?
ConclusionsWithin the study limitations, there is no difference in the overall treatment duration between both treatment approaches. Treatment duration is reduced in both SO or SC treatment plans if extractions are undertaken. The presence of lower arch crowding increases the duration of treatment. A comparative assessment of orthodontic treatment outcomes using the quantitative light-induced fluorescence (QLF) method between direct bonding and indirect bonding techniques in adolescents: a single-centre, single-blind randomized controlled trial
ConclusionThe bonding procedures used in the indirect bonding technique contribute to reducing the degree of WSL formation. Further, the use of flowable composite adhesives in this bonding process is more effective at reducing the appearance of WSLs than in cases where conventional composite adhesives are used.LimitationsThe limitation of our trial may be the small sample size and the short follow-up time for the patients.HarmsNo harms were detected during the study.ProtocolThe protocol was not published before trial commencement.RegistrationThis trial was registeredpost hoc at ‘Clinical Trials’ (http://www.clinicaltri...

Bimaxillary surgery to correct high-angle class II malocclusion: does a simultaneous genioplasty affect long-term stability?
Conclusions and implicationsOverjet was normalized and remained stable long term; there was an open bite in half of the patients. Combined orthodontic and bimaxillary surgical treatment of high-angle Class II patients showed skeletal relapse (greater than or equal to 2 mm) of the mandible in 40 per cent of patients. Mandibular advancement greater than 10 mm increased the risk for relapse. There was no increased risk for dental or skeletal instability associated with a genioplasty in combination with maxillary and mandibular surgery in the treatment of high-angle skeletal Class II malocclusion. Prevalence of impacted maxillary canines —an epidemiological study in a region with systematically implemented interceptive treatment
ConclusionThe prevalence of impacted maxillary canines in a geographical area in which interceptive treatment is systematically implemented is lower than that reported previously. The distributions of impacted canines with respect to gender and location are in accordance with those reported previously in similar studies. (Source: The European Journal of Orthodontics)

Skeletal and dental effects of surgically assisted rapid palatal expansion: a systematic review of randomized controlled trials
ConclusionsSARME is effective in obtaining a significant expansion of the maxillary transverse dimension. However, the immediate SARME effect is mainly a molar expansion rather than a pure bone transverse widening of the maxilla.RegistrationThe review protocol was registered at PROSPERO database with the registration number CRD42018117967. Three-dimensional evaluation of forced unilateral posterior crossbite correction in the mixed dentition: a randomized controlled trial
ConclusionAfter treatment, there were no significant differences between the four treatment groups and the normal group, which implies that the surface and projection area together with the shell volume for the four treatment groups and the normal group were equivalent.Trial registrationThe trial was registered withhttps://www.researchweb.org/is/sverige, registration number: 220751. Simplified method for applying static isotropic tensile strain in cell culture experiments with identification of valid RT-qPCR reference genes for PDL fibroblasts
ConclusionsA strain magnitude of 16 per cent for 48 hours elicited the most distinct cellular response by PDLF subjected to static tensile isotropic strain by the presented method.TBP andPPIB in conjunction proved to be the most appropriate reference genes to normalize target gene expression in RT-qPCR studies on PDLF subjected to tensile strain. Survival probability of dental autotransplantation of 366 teeth over 34 years within a hospital setting in the United Kingdom
ConclusionsAutotransplantation can be a justified procedure with good survival probability. It can be considered an alternative to other treatments, such as prosthodontic replacement of teeth. (Source: The European Journal of Orthodontics)
