Malocclusion severity and its associations with oral health-related quality of life in an adult population
ConclusionOne third of the study population were considered to have severe malocclusion. There was an association between malocclusion severity and OHRQoL in adult population, particularly in women. (Source: The European Journal of Orthodontics)

Canine exposure: open or closed?
SummaryEvidence for open or closed exposure of palatally displaced canines is equivocal, but this study sheds light on new facets which may influence the method of choice. The aim of this article is to give a short perspective on this field, highlight the merits of a study published in this issue of theEuropean Journal of Orthodontics by Bj örksvedet al. the study, place the findings into context and show how it may influence clinical practice. The presence and characteristics of ‘spin’ among randomized controlled trial abstracts in orthodontics
Conclusions sections of each included abstract was evaluated and categorized according to pre-determined spin strategies. Logistic regression analyses were employed to explore the association between spin and relevant factors.ResultsA total of 111 RCT abstracts were included, of which 69 (62.2 per cent) were identified with spin. In theResults section, 47 (42.3 per cent) abstracts had spin, and ‘focusing on significant within-group comparison for primary outcomes’ was the most frequent spin strategy. In theConclusions section, 57 (51.4 per cent) abstracts presented spin, with the most common strategy being ‘claiming ...

Prediction intervals reporting in orthodontic meta-analyses
ConclusionsWithin the study timeframe, reporting of prediction intervals is not routinely undertaken in orthodontic meta-analyses possibly due to a lack of awareness. In future orthodontic random effects models containing a minimum of three trials, reporting of prediction intervals is advocated as this gives an indication of the range of the expected effect of treatment interventions. Assessment of early exaggerated treatment effects in orthodontic interventions using cumulative meta-analysis
ConclusionsClinicians should be wary of the results of trials reporting the effectiveness of new interventions as there is a possibility that the reported effect size will be often exaggerated. (Source: The European Journal of Orthodontics)

Use of quality assessment tools within systematic reviews in orthodontics during the last decade: looking for a threshold?
Conclusions and implicationsQuality assessment tools for primary studies are largely used and varied in orthodontic systematic reviews, while a threshold-level has been stipulated in only one third. Additional efforts should be endorsed by the scientific community, to embrace more straightforward adoption of the most rigorous reporting guidelines in this respect. Gender gap in authorship within published orthodontic research. An observational study on evidence and time-trends over a decade
ConclusionsA gender gap related to Orthodontic research publications is persistent, with participation of women either as senior, or as leading authors, being suboptimal. Consistent efforts should be set in place, to facilitate more equal representation of women in research publishing, being supported by academia. (Source: The European Journal of Orthodontics)

Open vs closed surgical exposure of palatally displaced canines: a comparison of clinical and patient-reported outcomes —a multicentre, randomized controlled trial
ConclusionThe closed exposure group experienced more pain and discomfort mostly during active orthodontic traction. All other studied outcomes were similar between the two exposure groups.Clinical Trial registrationClinicalTrials.gov, ID: NCT02186548 andResearchweb.org, ID: 127201. Dental age, agenesis, and morphological anomalies in individuals with Van der Woude syndrome and isolated cleft palate
ConclusionsIn VWS and NSCP patients compared with non-cleft children, the difference in dental age compared with chronological age decreased. Hypodontia occurs at a high prevalence in VWS and NSCP patients compared with non-cleft children. (Source: The European Journal of Orthodontics)

Are treatment effect assumptions in orthodontic studies overoptimistic?
ConclusionsCareful consideration of the assumptions at the design stage of orthodontic studies are necessary in order to reduce the unreliability of clinical study results and research waste. (Source: The European Journal of Orthodontics)

Dento-skeletal effects produced by rapid versus slow maxillary expansion using fixed jackscrew expanders: a systematic review and meta-analysis
ConclusionsBoth RME and SME produce an effective dento-skeletal expansion of the maxilla. RME is slightly more effective in increasing the posterior transverse skeletal width of the maxilla while SME induces smaller molar inclination.RegistrationPROSPERO CDR42018105530. Efficacy of Miniscrew-Assisted Rapid Palatal Expansion (MARPE) in late adolescents and adults: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Conclusions and implicationsMARPE is a treatment modality that is associated with a high success rate in skeletal and dental maxillary expansion. MARPE can induce dental and periodontal side effects and affect peri-oral soft tissues. Given the serious risk of bias of the included studies, careful data interpretation is necessary and future research of higher quality is strongly recommended.RegistrationPROSPERO (CRD42020176618).FundingNo grants or any other support funding were received.
