Development of a 3D human osteoblast cell culture model for studying mechanobiology in orthodontics
ConclusionThe results obtained by applying constant compressive forces to 3D osteoblastic cultures validate this model system for exploring biomolecule release and analysing gene transcription. In particular, it highlights a disturbance in the expression of markers of osteogenesis. (Source: The European Journal of Orthodontics)

Comparison of post-treatment changes with and without retention in adolescents treated for maxillary impacted canines —a randomized controlled trial
ConclusionsChanges between the retention and the non-retention group were statistically but not clinically significant. Since satisfactory clinical results 1-year post-treatment were found in the non-retention group, retention does not appear to be needed. The 10-week interim period was useful in detecting patients who might have a relapse immediately after treatment.Trial registrationThe trial was not registered. Raloxifene administration enhances retention in an orthodontic relapse model
ConclusionRaloxifene could decrease post-orthodontic treatment relapse by decreasing bone resorption and indirectly enhancing bone formation. (Source: The European Journal of Orthodontics)

Evaluation of the effectiveness of a tailored mobile application in increasing the duration of wear of thermoplastic retainers: a randomized controlled trial
ConclusionsProvision of the bespoke ‘My Retainers’ application did not lead to an improvement in adherence with TPR wear over a 3-month follow-up period. Further refinement and research are required to develop and investigate means of enhancing adherence levels.Clinical registrationNCT03224481. (Source: The European Journal of Orthodontics)

Is dental agenesis associated with craniofacial morphology pattern? A systematic review and meta-analysis
ConclusionsThis systematic review and meta-analysis demonstrated that dental agenesis may be associated with specific craniofacial morphology. Further studies are necessary due to the variation of the certainty of the evidence.Conflict of interestnone declared.RegistrationPROSPERO (CRD42017055882). Morphometric analysis of the palatal shape and arch dimension in subjects with buccally displaced canine
ConclusionsPatients with buccally displaced permanent canine tended to have maxillary transverse constriction and variation in palatal vault morphology. The morphometric variation of the palatine vault and arch dimensions can be considered a clinical factor associated with the presence of BDC. (Source: The European Journal of Orthodontics)

Exploring the midline soft tissue surface changes from 12 to 15 years of age in three distinct country population cohorts
ConclusionThe midline points are a simple and valid method to assess the relative spatial positions of facial surface landmarks. This study confirms previous reports on the subtle differences in facial shapes and sizes of male and female children in different populations and also highlights the magnitudes and timings of growth for various midline landmark distances to the men point. Assessment of techniques used for superimposition of maxillary and mandibular 3D surface models to evaluate tooth movement: a systematic review
Conclusions and implicationsThe following areas of the maxilla could provide reliable outcomes: (1) the medial two-thirds of the third rugae and the area 5 mm dorsal to them and (2) an area including all rugae, with the lateral margins located at least 5 mm from the gingival margins and a distal margin that does not extend beyond the first molars. No recommendation is possible for other regions of the mouth. There is an urgent need for further research in the field.RegistrationPROSPERO (CRD42019124365). Dental and craniofacial features associated with GNAS loss of function mutations
ConclusionsPatients with iPPSD2 and maternalGNAS mutations had specific craniofacial alterations and dental abnormalities. These specific defects should be assessed in order to provide appropriate dental and orthodontic care to these patients. Vacuum-formed retainer versus bonded retainer for dental stabilization in the mandible —a randomized controlled trial. Part I: retentive capacity 6 and 18 months after orthodontic treatment
ConclusionsVFR and CTC have the same retention capacity in the mandible after 6 and 18 months. Relapse mainly occurs during the first 6 months of retention, but the post-treatment changes are generally small. Shorter VFRs in the mandible do not cause negative vertical effects. Part-time wear regimen is not associated with increased relapse.Trial registrationNCT03070444. (Source: The European Journal of Orthodontics)
