Anti-vascular endothelial growth factor treatment compared with steroid treatment for retinal vein occlusion: a meta-analysis
Background: This meta-analysis aims to compare the efficacy and safety of intravitreal anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) agents and intravitreal steroids for the treatment of macular edema (ME) secondary to retinal vein occlusion (RVO). Methods: A systematic literature search was conducted on Ovid MEDLINE, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Controlled Register of Trials for studies published between January 2005 and November 2021. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) reporting on patients with ME secondary to RVO who were treated with intravitreal steroids or anti-VEGF agents were included. A random effects meta-an...

Characteristics of Bilateral Retinal Detachment
Conclusion: Patients with bilateral RD were more common male and younger than the group of all RD patients. The proportion of pseudophakia was not different. The majority of fellow eye RD occurred within two years after the RD in the first eye. Second eye RD was less advanced and had a better anatomical repair rate. Des pite their experience in the first eye and despite typical symptoms patients presented only after in mean 12 days with RD in the second eye. RD in the initial and the subsequent eye showed a high symmetry. The anatomic result in the first eye is not a predictor for the anatomic results in the subseq uent e...

Symptom-Based Risk Factors for Retinal Tears and Detachments in Suspected Posterior Vitreous Detachment
Introductions: To determine symptom-level risk factors for retinal tear/ retinal detachment (RT/RD) in our patients presenting with symptoms of posterior vitreous detachment (PVD). Methods: We conducted a prospective cohort study of patients presenting to outpatient ophthalmology clinics at a single academic institution with complaint(s) of flashes, floaters and/or subjective field loss (SFL). Patients received a standardized questionnaire regarding past ocular history and s ymptom characteristics including number, duration and timing of flashes, and floaters, prior to dilated ocular examination. Final diagnosis was cate...

Evaluation of an Artificial Intelligence-Based Detector of Sub- and Intraretinal Fluid on a Large Set of Optical Coherence Tomography Volumes in Age-Related Macular Degeneration and Diabetic Macular Edema
Conclusion: The AI-based fluid detector achieves high performance for retinal fluid detection in a very large dataset dedicated to AMD and DME. Combining single detectors provides better fluid detection accuracy than considering the single detectors separately. The observed independence of the single detectors ensures that the detectors learned features particular to IRF and SRF. (Source: Ophthalmologica)

Properties of patient-reported outcome measures in recessive Stargardt disease
Introduction: To explore the psychometric properties of the National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire (NEI VFQ) and Impact of Vision Impairment profile (IVI) in recessive Stargardt disease (STGD1). Methods: The NEI VFQ-25 and IVI-28 were administered to individuals with STGD1. Responses were analyzed following psychometrically established dimension structures of the NEI VFQ (visual function subscale, VF; socioemotional subscale, SE) and of the IVI (functional subscale, F; emotional subscale, E). We analyzed internal consistency, dimensionality, item fit and differential item functioning (DIF), using latent trai...

Effect of topical anesthesia on reducing pain associated with mydriatic eye drops during retinopathy of prematurity screening.
Conclusion: This study showed no significant benefit of the topical anesthetic drop in the prevention of pain associa ted with mydriatic eye drops. The decrease in the pain response observed in repeated administrations is a novel finding. (Source: Ophthalmologica)

Natural Course of Optic Disc Pit Maculopathy: An Optical Coherence Tomography Study
Conclusion: Among the O CT characteristics, SRF was a negative prognostic factor in ODP-M. Most ODP-M patients showed improved or stable vision over three years of follow-up. Therefore, observation may be considered in patients with reasonable vision and without SRF, even when they present with remarkable OCT findings. (Source: Ophthalmologica)

Impact of COVID-19 before and after 2020 on retinal detachment management in a tertiary eye hospital in Germany
Conclusion We found significant differences in terms of elapsed time from first symptoms to surgical management for patients in 2020 in comparison to the same time period in 2019 and 2021. Less strict lockdown policies appear to impact patient behavior and patient care. Further measures, such as questionnaires, might help to address which measures may provide safer circumstances for patients to consult health care providers in the case of future strict lockdowns. Idiopathic Multifocal Choroiditis and Punctate Inner Choroidopathy – Evaluation of Risk Factors for Increased Relapse Rate: A 2-Year Prospective Observational Cohort Study
Conclusion: A history of secondary CNV and high myopia were associated with an increased relapse rate of disease activity. Moreover, the results of this study emphasize the challenging character of treating patients with MFC/PIC.Ophthalmologica (Source: Ophthalmologica)

Idiopathic multifocal choroiditis and punctate inner choroidopathy: evaluation of risk factors for increased relapse rate. A 2-year prospective observational cohort study
Introduction The aim of this study is to describe the course of disease in patients with idiopathic multifocal choroiditis (MFC) and punctate inner choroidopathy (PIC) and to identify risk factors associated with an increased relapse rate of disease activity. Methods In this prospective observational cohort study, demographical and clinical data were collected concerning the relapses rate of disease activity, the conclusions of the multimodal imaging results, treatment, complications and self-reported quality of life. Disease activity was defined as new inflammatory lesions or active inflammation in pre-existing chorioret...

The feasibility of using ultra-widefield retinal imaging to identify ocular pathologies amongst those with systemic medical disease attending tertiary healthcare facility at a university hospital
Conclusions UWF imaging is convenient and effec tive to identify retinal pathologies in patients attending hospital clinics for a range of systemic diseases. Imaging the eye allows for remote assessment and reassessment of the retinal diseases, however the time taken to train graders and for image analysis and reporting should not be underestimat ed. Comparison of intravitreal dexamethasone implant and posterior subtenon triamcinolone injection in the treatment of diabetic macular edema in vitrectomized eyes
PURPOSE: To compare posterior subtenon triamcinolone (PSTA) application and intravitreal dexamethasone phosphate (DEX) implant in the treatment of diabetic macular edema (DME) in vitrectomized eyes. METHODS: This retrospective study included 64 (48.12 %) patients who received PSTA and 69 (51.88 %) patients who received DEX implants in DME treatment after vitrectomy. Best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), central macular thickness (CMT), and intraocular pressure (IOP) were analyzed before injection, at 1, 3 and 6 months after injection. The post-injection values were statistically compared with the pre-injection value. RESU...
