Extended Internal Limiting Membrane Peeling in complex Pediatric Rhegmatogenous Retinal Detachment.
Conclusion: Vitrectomy with ILM peeling is technically feasible in pediatric RRD. limiting epiretinal proliferation and achieving favorable anatomical outcomes in cases of complex pediatric RRD, however , the long-term effect of ILM peeling needs further investigation. (Source: Ophthalmologica)

Contributions to Progress in Ophthalmology from Switzerland: From the 16th to the 21st Century
There are numerous contributions to the development of ophthalmology from Switzerland, a country that holds a very special place in the history of medicine from the age of Paracelsus and Vesal to the current time. This review gives an overview over these contributions and the pioneers, among them Johann Friedrich Horner, Hans Goldmann, Jules Gonin and Walter Rudolf Hess, one of only two ophthalmologists ever awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine. A leading role in this evolution of modern ophthalmology has been played by physicians from Basel, home of Switzerland's oldest university. (Source: Ophthalmologica)

Clinical protocols for the evaluation of rod function
This work presents a fast clinical protocol for dark adapted chromatic perimetry (DAC) and a novel clinical tool: scotopic chromatic pupil campimetry (CPC). The goal of the study is to explore the applicability of these methods in a clinical setting, their test-retest repeatability and congruence of results. Local rod sensitivity was assessed at 36 locations within 30 degrees eccentricity of the visual field in fifteen healthy subjects (mean age 43 ±16 years; 7 females, 8 males) with DAC (red and cyan stimuli) and CPC two times in repeated measurements. The duration of individual measurements was 370±5 s for CPC, and 366...

Can the Onset of Atrophic Age-Related Macular Degeneration Be an Acceptable Endpoint for Preventative Trials?
The slowly progressive nature of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) means that establishing the efficacy of novel preventative treatments aiming to slow progression of disease, remains challenging, and where earlier endpoints are needed to improve their feasibility. This review examines whether the onset of atrophic AMD, as seen as anatomical signs on optical coherence tomography termed nascent geographic atrophy (nGA), could act as a useful surrogate endpoint for early intervention trials. Relationship between proliferative diabetic retinopathy and inflammatory markers in patients with type 1 diabetes in Brazil: a nested case control study
Conclusion Patients with higher levels of C-reactive protein are more likely to present with PDR. We did not find a link between serum levels of VEGF, TNF-⍺ or IL-6 and PDR. The function of inflammatory biomarkers in PDR must be addressed in further studies. (Source: Ophthalmologica)

Preoperative Optical Coherence Tomography Findings of Foveal Splitting Rhegmatogenous Retinal Detachment
To assess preoperative optical coherence tomography (OCT) findings of foveal splitting retinal detachment (RD), and to determine their postoperative outcomes. Consecutive patients who underwent RD surgery over a one-year period were included. Patients diagnosed with a detachment extending to the edge of the fovea on fundus examination (i.e. macula-On/Off) underwent macular OCT scanning. One-year visual acuity (VA) of macula-On/Off, macula-On and macula- Off eyes was compared. 85 eyes were included, of which 8 had a macula-On/Off RD. On preoperative OCT, all macula-On/Off RD had a foveal detachment extending beyond the f...

Change in Ophthalmology Practice during COVID-19 Pandemic: Egyptian Perspective
Conclusion: COVID-19 pandemic could go on for months or even years with a significant impact on the ophthalmology practice. Trying to keep the balance between safety and economic burdens, the majority of ophthalmologists are willing to see elective patients and operate on an urgent COVID-19 patient, with adherence to the safety protocols. Comparison of internal limiting membrane peeling and flap removal to flap insertion on visual outcomes in highly myopic eyes with macular hole retinal detachment
Introduction: To compare the morphological and visual outcomes after pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) with internal limiting membrane (ILM) peeling and flap removal to that with flap insertion in eyes with myopic macular hole retinal detachment (MHRD). Methods: Forty-six eyes of 45 patients with a MHRD were studied. Eighteen eyes were treated by PPV with ILM peeling and flap removal, and 28 eyes by flap insertion. The baseline characteristics and postoperative findings were compared between the two groups. Results: The average age of the cases was 70.0 ±8.5 years. The best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was improved from 1.5...

Surgical treatment for traumatic macular holes: Reconstructive changes in foveal microstructures and visual predictors analysis
Purpose To investigate the reconstructive changes in foveal microstructures and analyze the visual predictors in eyes with surgically closed traumatic macular holes. Methods 71 eyes with TMHs that underwent vitrectomy were reviewed. Clinical data, best-corrected visual acuity and spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) images were recorded. The length of ellipsoid zone (EZ) defect and the integrity of postoperative external limiting membrane (ELM) were measured. Results The primary hole closure rate was 90.14% (64/71). In 43 initially closed eyes with SD-OCT scans, the number of eyes with intact ELM increas...

The Effect of Internal Limiting Membrane Cleaning on Epiretinal Membrane Formation after Vitrectomy for Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy
Conclusion ILM cleaning with a flexible nitinol loop following diabetic vitrectomy resulted in significant reduction in ERM formation and reduced necessity for revision surgery. There was significant improvement in VA at 3 months but not over longer follow-up. (Source: Ophthalmologica)

Relationship between aflibercept efficacy and genetic variants of genes associated to neovascular age-related macular degeneration. BIOIMAGE trial
The purpose of the present study was to identify genetic variants of the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) pathway genes and other candidates associated to neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) as possible predictive biomarkers of aflibercept good treatment response in a 52-week (with extension phase, week 104), prospective, open-label, single-arm, multicentre phase IV trial Aflibercept was administrated according to label the first year in 194 non-consecutive patients, followed by a treatextend regimen. 338 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in 90 genes associated to nAMD were analysed. Univaria...
