A comparative study of 23-gauge and 27-gauge vitrectomy for puckers or floaters, including evaluation of the effect of combined phaco-vitrectomy surgery on postoperative outcome.
Conclusion: Overall, the trial showed that 27-gauge has the better postoperative outcome compared to 23-gauge PPV. Combining vitrectomy with phaco surgery did not influence the study outcome parameters. (Source: Ophthalmologica)

The Role of the Microbiome in Age-Related Macular Degeneration: A Review of the Literature
Background: Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a progressive, multifactorial, degenerative disease and the leading cause of severe visual loss in the elderly population. The exact pathogenesis of AMD remains elusive, being the combination of genetic, environmental, metabolic, and functional processes. A better understanding of the disease ’s pathophysiology can lead to new treatment targets. The human microbiome seems to be a potential therapeutic pathway for AMD, as it has been recently proven to play a role in its pathogenesis.Summary: This review sheds light on the association between the microbiome and AMD.Key...

Evaluation of Macular Changes in the Long Term after Pars Plana Vitrectomy with Internal Limiting Membrane Peeling for Diabetic Macular Edema
Conclusion: Although PPV with ILM peeling had efficacy in DME management, this effect tended to decrease over time, such that a considerable number of patients required additional treatment. (Source: Ophthalmologica)

Evaluation of Macular Changes in Long Term Period Following Pars Plana Vitrectomy with Internal Limiting Membrane Peeling for Diabetic Macular Edema
Aim: To evaluate long term macular changes following pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) with internal limiting membrane (ILM) peeling for diabetic macular edema (DME) Methods: Forty eligible eyes of 37 patients were included in this retrospective study. Best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), central macular thickness (CMT) and 5-mm macular volume (5-MV) were examined preoperatively and at postoperative 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 6th, 12th, 24th months and final visits. Response to surgical treatment was considered as recurrence, reincrease and recovery of DME based on macular changes. Results: Mean follow-up time was 51.1 ±19.0 months follo...

Retinal Pigment Epithelium Tears After Anti-Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor Therapy for Neovascular Age-Related Macular Degeneration
Conclusion: The incidence of RPE tears did not differ according to the type of anti-VEGF agent. The final BCVA was proportional to the BCVA before and after RPE tears. Continuous treatment with anti-VEGF after the occurrence of RPE tears can benefit the final visual acuity and macular anatomy. (Source: Ophthalmologica)

Reactivation of CNV after discontinuation of bevacizumab treatment of age-related macular degeneration
Conclusion: Based on quiescent disease, anti-VEGF therapy was discontinued in 58% of patients after they received bevacizumab injections every 4, 6, or 8 weeks for one year; 67% sh owed reactivated CNV within the year after discontinuation. The high reactivation rate of CNV shown in this study, should help clinicians develop rational discontinuation protocols. (Source: Ophthalmologica)

Predictive factors for long-term postoperative visual outcome in patients with macula-off rhegmatogenous retinal detachment treated with vitrectomy
Conclusions: It is important to determine predictive factors for visual outcome, so as to inform patients about prognosis and help in the decision-making of patients ’ management. (Source: Ophthalmologica)

Risk Factors For Recurrent Myopic Macular Hole Retinal Detachment After Silicone Oil Removal In Patients With Open Flat Macular Hole
Conclusions: If there is a "flat open" MH that is large, located at the apex of PS or with HHF or MHI of less than 0.9-0.5, it has a high chance of recurrent MHRD after S.O removal. (Source: Ophthalmologica)

The willingness of patients to participate in an eye donation registry for research
Conclusion: Overall, patients had a positive attitude towards postmortem eye donation for rese arch purposes. Importantly, reasons given against post-mortem eye donation were often related to misconceptions and were potentially addressable. These results underline the fundamental willingness of patients in Germany to donate their eyes post-mortem for research purposes. (Source: Ophthalmologica)

Use of composite endpoints in early and intermediate age-related macular degeneration clinical trials – state-of-the-art and future directions
The slow progression of early AMD stages to advanced AMD requires the use of surrogate endpoints in clinical trials. The use of combined endpoints may allow for shorter and smaller trials due to increased precision. We performed a literature search for the use of composite endpoints as primary outcome measures in clinical studies of early AMD stages. PubMed was searched for composite endpoints used in early/intermediate AMD studies published during the last 10 years. A total of 673 articles of interest were identified. After reviewing abstracts and applicable full-text articles, 33 articles were eligible and thus included ...
