Dental calculus microbiome correlates with dietary intake
Conclusions: The present study demonstrate that it exists an inter-variability in the microbial composition of dental calculus among individuals of a rather homogenous population. Furthermore, the observed biodiversity and microbial functions can find an association to specific dietary habits, such as a high fiber diet or a protein rich diet. This article is protected by copyright. Role of oral microbiome in oral oncogenesis, tumor progression, and metastasis
AbstractSquamous cell carcinoma is the most common malignant tumor of the oral cavity and its adjacent sites, which endangers the physical and mental health of patients and has a complex etiology. Chronic infection is considered to be a risk factor in cancer development. Evidence suggests that periodontal pathogens, such asPorphyromonas gingivalis,Fusobacterium nucleatum, andTreponema denticola, are associated with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). They can stimulate tumorigenesis by promoting epithelial cells proliferation while inhibiting apoptosis and regulating the inflammatory microenvironment.Candida albicans prom...

Electrochemical sensors for oral biofilm –biomaterials interface characterization: A review
AbstractImportant processes related to the interaction of the oral microbiome with the tooth surface happen directly at the interface. For example, the chemical microenvironment that exists at the interface of microbial biofilms and the native tooth structure is directly involved in caries development. Consequentially, a critical understanding of this interface and its chemical microenvironment would provide novel avenues in caries prevention, including secondary caries that often occurs at the interface of the dental biofilm, tooth structure, and dental material. Electrochemical sensors are a unique quantitative tool and ...

Characterization of Leuconostoc mesenteroides MJM60376 as an oral probiotic and its antibiofilm activity
In this study, 67 lactic acid bacteria (LAB) were isolated from fermented food and screened for antagonistic activity againstStreptococcus mutans, the causative pathogen of dental caries.Leuconostoc mesenteroides MJM60376 showed the highest antagonistic activity againstS. mutans KCTC3065.L. mesenteroides MJM60376 also showed oral probiotic characteristics including weak acid production, lysozyme tolerance, adhesion to oral epithelial cell (YD-38), antibiotic susceptibility, and good coaggregation ability withS. mutans. Furthermore, the biofilm formation ofS. mutans was significantly reduced when cocultured withL. mesentero...

Transcriptional analysis of the mfa ‐cluster genes in Porphyromonas gingivalis strains with one and two mfa5 genes
This study examined the transcriptional unit and activity ofmfa-cluster genes in strains with one (the ATCC 33277 and TDC60 strains) and two (the HG66 and A7436 strains)mfa5 genes. Complementary DNA was prepared from the total RNA extracted from the bacterial cells in the logarithmic growth phase using a random primer. PCR analysis for the intergenic regions frommfa1 tomfa5 ormfa5-2 showed thatmfa1 tomfa5 ormfa5-2 formed a polycistronic gene cluster. Quantitative real-time PCR showed that themfa1 transcription was 5 –10 times higher than that ofmfa2 in all the strains. However,mfa2 tomfa5 mostly showed a comparable expre...
