Evaluation of the Mental Health Referral Process for African American Adolescent Patients Within a Primary Care Setting: A Quality Improvement Project
Approximately 10% to 20% of youth worldwide are affected by mental health conditions. However, most remain inadequately diagnosed and treated (World Health Organization, 2020). According to the American Psychiatric Association (2019), even though rates of mental disorders in the African American population are similar to that of the general population, the existing disparities cause this group to receive lower quality, nonculturally competent care. Furthermore, a disproportionate number of African American adolescents are affected by mental health disorders, with depressive moods being the most common reason for referral (...

Identifying Congenital Heart Block in Primary Care
Congenital heart block (CHB) is a rare type of congenital heart disease described as an interference of the conduction of electrical impulses in the heart that control the contraction of the ventricles and the pumping of the heart. There are different types of heart block ranging in severity, with first-degree heart block being the least severe and third-degree (or complete) heart block being the most severe, along with second-degree Mobitz type I and second-degree Mobtiz type II. CHB is rare, with an incidence rate of 1 in 15,000 to 1 in 22,000 live births. (Source: Journal of Pediatric Health Care)

A Webinar to Improve Parental COVID-19 Vaccine Hesitancy
COVID-19 is a deadly worldwide pandemic and has led to rapid vaccine development. Vaccinating children is a key step to ending the pandemic. The aim of this project was to determine if a 1-hour webinar improved parental COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy, using a pretest-posttest design. The webinar was streamed live and later posted to YouTube. Parental vaccine hesitancy was measured by an adapted version of the Parental Attitudes about Childhood Vaccine (PACV) survey for COVID-19 vaccines. PACV data was collected during the live session and from YouTube for 4 weeks after the original webinar air date. (Source: Journal of Pediatric Health Care)

A Prolonged Treatment Associated With Absent Septum Pellucidum in Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome: A Case Report
We describe a newborn with a prolonged NAS treatment course necessitating high doses of opioids and phenobarbital, found to have an isolated absent septum pellucidum (ASP). We hypothesize a mechanism for an association between an ASP and a difficult NAS treatment course. (Source: Journal of Pediatric Health Care)

Impact of COVID-19 on Mental Health and Resiliency of Pregnant and Parenting Adolescents and Young Adults: A Qualitative Study
Since the first documented case of COVID-19 in late 2019, the pandemic has drastically altered the lives of people across the world and added new social and emotional stressors. Adjustments have included remote education, working from home, social distancing, and isolation from friends and family (Mahase, 2020; WHO Director-General's Opening Remarks at the Media Briefing on COVID-19 - 11 March 2020, 2020). Recent studies revealed increased reporting of adverse psychological symptoms due to these lifestyle adaptations in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, especially in women and young people (Duranku ş& Aksu, 2020; L ópez-Mo...

Lactation Curricular Content of Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Programs in the United States: A National Survey
The health benefits of breastfeeding for both parent and child are well documented (Meek et al., 2022; Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2022a). Meek et al. (2022) states that the normative standard for infant health and nutrition is breastfeeding and human milk. Studies continue to support and document the significant health benefits of breastfeeding for mothers (Feltner et al., 2018) and children (Stoody et al., 2019). Multiple national organizations advocate exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months of life with recommendations to continue breastfeeding until at least 1 year of age (American Academy of Fa...
